Well howdy folks….still alive, still playing out in the shop whenever I can. Big changes at work (all good things), but in the short term has reduced my shop time a bit while we wrestle through some much needed changes and improvements in the organization.

I sure am glad to be coming out of the grips of winter! Through the winter I had been working on a few things on and off.

With the insane vehicle market I decided to sell my 17 Silverado. I have been on the warpath with debt, so getting out of that note was a goal for a bit (and closes out all debt with exception to my mortgage). Sold the truck on CL. I owned it for 2 years, put 28k on it. and with this insane market I actually MADE $7k on the truck!!

I still need a truck so I took my time and shopped out a 2nd Gen Tundra for a cash purchase. Found an 07 CM Limited 5.7 4WD w/179k on the clock. Got a solid deal on it, but it did need a bunch of work. Brakes front and back complete, suspension front and back complete, headlights & fog lights were all fogged up and nasty. I also moved my Fisher plow setup over to the Tundra. Just wrapped that project up, came out pretty nice. She looks good for a 15 y/o truck! Runs and drive fantastic, she’s just broken in for a Toyota.

Cheers everybody!

Those Wheels are updated. Same as the ones i have on my 2021. **** yours have the lighter shade of grey "Spokes" instead of "Charcoal".
looks like the headlights have been replaced as well. i dont see any fogging of the plastic.
I had to get another Tundra since the 2012 had completely died. Excessive rust on major components, frame sub assembly and body panels. I could not justify repairs that were going to be more than 50% of trucks value.
so Jan 2021 the new Black TRD Sport.

Yeah, those are 20” wheels from a 21 Limited. All of the lights (housings and bulbs) have been replaced to freshen the look up.

I had a 2012 Tundra a while back too. Nice truck but I sold it for a Chevy for comfort (new job that I had to commute for). New position gave me the opportunity for an executive car, so no more commuter needed.

I plan on keeping this Tundra for a while. It runs and drives nicer than my 2012, and this one has 179k on it!

Hey man, good to see you!! Nice move cashing in on the old truck. The new tundra looks awesome as well. I'd love to get some new wheels and headlights for mine to update it a bit, those made a big difference. I still have my 08 double cab. It's getting a bit tight for us as a family of 4 now. I've considered trading in my 2017 Rav4 and the Tundra together in exchange for a new(er) crew cab, but all our vehicles are now paid off. So, going to roll with them all for a bit longer.

What do you have lined up for summer projects?

Yeah, the crew cab is a must for the family.

Summer projects, there’s a list🤣. 200’ privacy fence at the rear property line. Pool deck. Dropping 3 big pine trees….there more, but I’m trying to keep the plan realistic…lol.

Been looking at these roll boxes at HF for a while, picked one up on sale a couple weeks ago. Had to wait for a red one to come in, just picked it up today.

I just got it loaded up, it holds a lot more than I thought it would!

It’s well made, damn good value for $199.99

Hello everyone! Hope winter has been ok for you! I’ve been busy with work, as well as playing in the shop a bunch. I hadn’t worked out in the shop for quite a while.

One of the primary reasons I got back to having fun in the shop was finding a sled for my 12 y/o son for Christmas.

Picked him up a creampuff 1995 Polaris Indy Sport 440 Fan w/reverse & electric start. Pretty rare situation with a one owner machine that’s been very well maintained. It still needed a bunch of work.

Did a new battery, full annual maintenance, set of plugs. I started out trying to use the original skid….but it was toast. Tired springs, dead shocks, and a couple broken bogies. Ended up doing a full XTRA-10 swap (rebuilt the XTRA-10 skid, rebuilt the Fox Shocks prior to installation). Project wrapped up nicely, my son loves the machine!

Hey, quick question for anyone out there that has done some brass restoration work (specifically old gauges and whatnot). What is your go-to method for getting the brass back to a nice brilliant shine?

I got given a very old chart recorder. It was painted grey, and was pretty dirty inside. I got it all pulled apart, cleaned things up, and in the process I have gotten the paint off of the brass. I still have the bezel to strip the paint off of, but that’s soaking now.

I bought some small polishing wheels, some compound sticks, and expect that would work well…

Would very much appreciate input from anyone that’s brought a few of these beauties back to shine.

Hey man, sorry, didn’t catch your last few posts when you made them! Awesome to see your sled pickups, and the trailer. We’re heavily considering either some ATVs or snowmobiles as our next endeavor. I think we’ll get more use out of the atvs since they don’t rely on snow to use, but I grew up snowmobiling and have a deep love of that sport. Time will tell!

I sold my double cab tundra and upgraded to a crewmax, so that was a big check off the list for us. I sent the XJ off to the body shop to have some rust repair/body work done, which has been taking forever, but I’m eager to get it back and rolling for the spring!

Hey stranger! Yeah, the snowmobiling was nearly a dud this year. We got a few day trips in, but it was a bit of a let down…..here’s to next year being better!

I got caught up on your thread, saw the new truck! Can’t beat the CM when it comes to room for the family.

I had to do rocker panel repair and a couple small floor patches on my XJ build. It’s just the way it is up here….lol.

Hey everybody….hope everyone is having a nice fall!

I have been putting some thought into compressed air piping/distribution. I like the idea of those plastic pipe kits, but wanted to hear from some of you who have used them….any good or not?

For context, I run an 80 gallon/7HP compressor. Probably want to do a 3/4” or 1” system.

Thoughts…?

Hello all, I hope everyone is having a good holiday season!

I’ve been waiting to post this update, as the last few months have been a rollercoaster of happenings and emotions.

This past summer my wife and I finally decided that it’s time to move. Ironically, we bought our current house as an investment property, and only intended to live here a short time (we’ve been here for 24 years). Suffice to say that wasn’t how it worked for us…lol.

The property once belonged to my wife’s grandmother. She suffered a debilitating stroke in 1998, and had to move to an assisted care facility for the rest of her life. At that time the home, barn, and a few other out buildings all sat on one 35ish acre lot (residential). My wife’s aunt had PoA, and decided to embark on a project to re-zone and subdivide the land. The entire lot was first re-zoned to Industrial. Then the lot was subdivided into 3 lots. The first 2 lots sold pretty quickly, but the last lot (one with the house, barn, outbuildings on it) did not. At that time the asking price for the lot with the house was $1.2M (obviously way outside my price range when I was a 22 year old just starting out in life). She decided to further subdivide, which parsed the house and barn onto one small lot, and brought the price well within my range, so we bought it.

The place needed love….i mean, it REALLY needed love. At the time, we just looked at it as a short-term investment. Hold onto it for a couple years, wait for the other lots to be developed/built, then go to market for a tidy profit. This was conveniently timed with the mortgage bubble pop, so our first go-round on trying to sell was a complete failure. We thought we’d be insulated from that issue with it being industrial properly, but it didn’t work out that way.

With things being that way they were, we decided we were going to keep it for a while. With that, we began an 8-year renovation project. sequentially gutting and rebuilding the house room-by-room. Gut/repair/new wiring/new plumbing/insulate. We also reconfigured the house into a 2-family (over/under), separating all utilities for each floor. The project was all-consuming, but we got it done. We probably could have gotten it done quicker, but I went t through a few “burn out” periods where I’d needed to walk away from it for a weeks/months to save my sanity. I’d eventually pick it back up again after a break. 8ish years later, I had it done.

After the house renovation I had a little break, but found idle hands was bad for me. Thats when I endeavored to build my shop, the subject of this build thread. Another major undertaking, but this one was a lot less stressful, as I didn’t have to “live” in a construction zone…lol. Though, I can safely say I still don’t consider the shop “done”. With a structure this old it is always in some state of change and/or repair.

In any event, we had been talking more and more about wanting a bigger lot, more outdoor space, maybe a bit of woods. We’ve rolled these thoughts around for the last several years, and earlier this year we finally decided it was time. I really do have mixed emotions about it. We’ve put so much into the property, along with it being in her family for nearly 100 years! Being a federal style post & beam, built in 1791, the home (and barn) have quite a story to tell. The sad reality is that with this sale the end of its time has come. I am deeply saddened by this, but I can no more stop the march of time than anyone else. If this home was on a nicer lot with some woods and land I’d stay and care for it until my end, but alas that is not the case.

I’m taking a few pieces of the place with me, a few mementos to display at our new home, honoring this one and what it has meant to me and my family.

With that being said, we are under agreement and are set to close sometime in early February. I absolutely hate that we are going to be moving in the dead middle of winter, but that’s just how the timing is working out.

The good news, we are super excited about our new home! It’s about 200 years newer. I am it sure how long it will take me to learn to live in a house with no curved floors, doorways out of square, old stone basement…lol. Best part, it already has a shop!

My new shop is nearly the same size as my current barn, only it’s a modern structure that is fully trussed. The entire 30’ x 50’ space is wide open, no posts inside at all!, all of it with 14’ tall ceilings. Already has a 2-post lift, natural gas heating system, and it’s plumbed with water (with a self draining spigot so I don’t have to keep it heated if I don’t want to). The new shop has TWO DOORS, both are 10’ wide, one is 10’ tall and the other is 11’ tall, both with power openers. With the space being wide open I can easily fit 4 vehicles inside! There are two davit style beam cranes (one at each end of the building), and lots of built-in storage (shelving and whatnot). It also as an attic storage space with full staircase access.

Safe to say that we are extremely excited for the new chapter in the new house. We have big plans for the new house, and I most definitely have big plans for the new shop! I will be starting a new thread for that when I’m ready to introduce you all to the new place.

In closing to this chapter, I want to say thank you to all of you who helped me with advice and guidance. I really did learn so much from all of you, a lot of people I have never met. Thank you for openly and freely sharing your knowledge with me!

As fate would have it, my wife’s car needed a water pump and my truck needed new brake lines from the D-block to the axle…..and I have already sold my lift and heating system…lol.

Man, I don’t miss working on the floor in front of a salamander!

Hoping this the last repair I have to do in the old shop! We close on the new place in a month!

Hey, anybody out there have any input on a good all-in-one table lift to work on ATV’s/snowmobiles/SxS?

Looking to buy one nice table for working on all those things.

Any input is appreciated!
