Do these pliers look new to you?

OK, first I know they're just tools. Second, I can understand and don't mind a little grease or oil left on something from the production process. But I just got these from Snap On (ordered online) and they don't look new to me, maybe like a return? I'm not a pro mechanic so I don't use my stuff hard every day, but I have tools I've used for over 20 years that look better than these because I take care of my stuff, especially if it's expensive stuff. Also the grease will probably clean off, but not the little knicks in the plastic. Is this what Snap On is shipping these days, or did they send me a return when I paid for a new one? Thought I'd ask before contacting them. Thanks.

The working parts look like new. The dark areas are from rattling and sliding around a tool box. Buy them and clean the dirty areas with a little mineral spirits on a soft cloth.
I have and use an ultrasonic cleaning system for stuff like this.

Clean the rubber with silicone spray. I don't know why, but it does an amazing job cleaning off dirt and grease.

Thanks for the replies, just emailed SO and told them I'd like to exchange these for a new pair (since I paid for new). I'll see what they say, hopefully they won't expect me to pay for return shipping. If it wasn't a $60 pair of pliers I'd just clean them and call it good, but... I pay extra both for Snap On's rep for quality and to support an American company... pretty disappointed this time. Never had a problem ordering from them before.

If I sent something out like that, I'd never hear the end of it. Snap-on should have it least made an effort to clean it. A few years ago, I received a shipment of new Facom punches from Stanley-Proto (in NC). Cleaned and rebagged every one of them before they shipped out.257gpb3.jpg257gpb4.jpg257gpb5.jpg

Definitely not as bad as that but I did get some stuff like that from Snap On a few years ago.

I'd be happy if they were on the dollar table at the local flea market for that set of pliers...but not so much if I ordered new and got that! Haha. I mean they will clean up and function the same, but they could have at least done that for you at the price paid for Snap On!

I just received a pair of the 9" needle nose pliers they came in a cardboard envelope with no other wrapping had one small dirty streak on one handle that cleaned right up. I would be really pissed if they sent me something that looked like that. That's inexcusable.

I would email customer service with images and *****. That's totally inexcusable when you pay a huge premium for their products and their inflated shipping. Let us know what they say. I bet they offer to replace them and will probably not ask for the "used" ones back.

Bad idea, IMO. :) Silicones get everywhere and will interfere with surface adhesion of anything -- like paint. I've worked on industrial sites where incoming materials that contained silicones were banned and suppliers had to provide certification that no silicones were in any products sold to the mills.

Try WD-40, mineral spirits, or SuperClean (the purple stuff). They'll likely take the oily-greasy stuff off better and won't contaminate surfaces.

I'd let Snap-on customer service see what you got too, @kdeboy. Those don't look new to me, handling and banging around in shipping notwithstanding.

Those cost $60? I'd be pissed off, too. I hope you sent photos with your email.

In the past when I was buying Snap-On made pliers through Caterpillar, I had some bulk packed ones that were pretty dirty on the grips, but nothing quite that bad. Most of the dirt/oil would clean off with something like hand sanitizer.

Those may be new but they are Filthy. I would be pissed if that is what I received as new. The grips should be free of grease. Maybe a couple scuffs here and there from shipping but not like that. Hopefully they take care of you and give you new ungreased grips. If that was used set for a used price, sure.

I bought a new Snap-On dial torque wrench many years ago and they sent me a dirty used one. I obviously exchanged it.

Since nobody asked - what do the jaws look like? Do they look used? The handle will clean up easy enough - I use brake cleaner on a rag to wipe my handles down when needed. Seems to work fine for me. If the jaws are thrashed, have debris in them, then they are used and should be swapped out on their dime.

Even Amazon packages their cheap wrenches in cardboard sleeves for protection. Shame on SO for not doing the same.

I'm inclined to take a different approach. I would email pics, tell them these were just received, and ask if that condition is acceptable for a new product.
If it is...fine...not interested in doing business with you again. I'll keep my pliers, you keep the $60, but that'll be the last purchase I ever make from them.
It should not have gotten to where it is, but they deserve, IMHO, a chance to make it right or stand behind that.

I'm suprised you even received the tool to begin with. The last two times I ordered (different orders, 1 year apart) pliers directly from the SO website, the packages arrived with NOTHING inside. Yes, they are just a plain cardboard envelopes, but there was nothing inside the packages except picking slips. Both times I had to call SO and have them send a replacement tool. The second time it happened, I was questioning the SO customer service agent on the phone about how this same scenario could happen to the same customer twice? His answer was.... "well, you know it's hard to get good warehouse workers these days". He also admitted that it was a WELL known problem inside SO that their shipping department was having "problems".

I'm pretty sure SO will send you a new replacement tool with no questions asked.

So have you heard back from SO? IME they respond to emails very quickly and their customer service is really good.
+1 on that. I order a fair bit online. They sent me a pair of side cutters with a gouge in the grip. I sent them a photo of it and they shipped me new ones and told me to keep the old.

Still disappointing, but I’ve never had a situation the didn’t immediately rectify
