I have a piece of American history on my work bench!
"I just thought it was cool," Tom tells me. Like the other old signs and plaques he's sent over the years as my very first GJ customer, indeed it is.
I had to research it ... and wasn't even remotely ready for what I learned.
This is an original cast iron name plate for the Morton Hotel in Mortonville, Pennsylvania (the town's first hotel) per the information I found online.
It was built, owned and operated by John Jay ... one of the learned gentlemen in our country's history who wrote a good many of The Federalist Papers!
It was going to be a modern color scheme when we first talked. Now that it's stripped for bodywork and seeing all the unique details documenting its obvious age -- check out those scribe marks! -- we talked again before I proceeded further. He agrees with my suggestion not to do any metal work on it at all and to restore it back to as close to original as possible.
The best I can tell, the number 2 was the building's street address.
It's an honor and a privilege to even have it here to see for myself let alone getting to fondle it!! Just ... WOW. I'll add it to my Custom Powder Coating thread on here when it's done.
