Advertising metal display according to the stamp! Sure looks like pressteel though...
I totally missed that. So good call not posting it in that thread 😂. But I believe Sears awarded the contract to both amd and pressteel as vendors. Based on where you lived dictated which vendor made roller you got… since those are listed as drop shipped from vendor in the catalog

These were from early to mid 50s, so 70 years or so old. If this thing could talk I'm sure it would have some stories...

Here's a clunker
Great find! Scare to say the least west of the river, I'd go so far as to hang the "rare" label on it for us east of the river folk. I've had one chance at one, in upstate NY. Didn't have time for the trip and couldn't convince anyone to snag it and ship it for me. Congrats!!

Boy ain’t that the truth. They are fairly rare. My perspective sometimes gets skewed because I have seen 3 together but we know that’s because I know a long time collector and he will drive distances to get them. Although the last one was 40 minutes from my house and he went and got it instead of sending me the listing. What a jerk 🙄😂.

Interesting there was no specific top box for them
Agreed! But I think they were looking to start making boxes more more like modern rollers so that’s why they didn’t offer a top chest. If you look at the 1960 catalog, you also see the deluxe roller that has a lamp on top. To date, I am not aware of anyone having a picture of one or even possesing one. That’s the ultimate unicorn for anyone that even is aware of the catalog photo. Roller on the far left. Note how it is listed as being drop shipped from vendor.

Looks like a couple of those have top chest on them, and with full length drawer pulls? Those must be different boxes.

Correct. Those are the common red/gray boxes. They are smaller dimensions. The deluxe roller has a front cover and drop ships from Waterloo

Well it's interesting to see how many vendors supplied these. Sears could get almost anything made by anyone back then!

I would normally not buy a box in this poor of condition but these limited-run intermediate chests are few and far between. This will need the full spa treatment. It'll probably be media blasted and put to primer until I find a paint mix for this era that I can live with. Nothing out of a rattle can looks right.

There's no logo on this, but because it says "GUARANTEED HIGHEST QUALITY", I think it belongs here.

This yard stick is so hefty, I think it should be referred to as a yard board. A standard yard stick is 3/32" thick by 1-1/8" wide. This one is 5/16" thick by 1-5/16" wide. Sears probably gave these away, but I haven't searched catalogs yet.

The fine print on the left side says "WESTCOTT RULE CO. SENECA FALLS, N.Y."; on the right "PA & N.Y.C. APPVD. 35????". Although, in this case, if "PA" means Pennsylvania, it may not be as old as I think. The two-character state abbreviation standard started in 1963.

This rule is well used, but the patina is very nice.

Westcott is still in business since 1872.

Not mine, but in the machine shop at school, a 1955-58 8 drawer cabinet. I just took this quick pic as we were putting some things up before class so I haven't been able to get the exact year.

My 8d had the date stamp covered by the factory divider as well. I've got it stripped down for a refurb, the date on mine is 1957.

I picked up a fairly large group of early =v= tools at a sale yesterday. I spent some time today cleaning them up and added them to the other =v= tools that live in the Craftsman machinists box.

Just got this at an ES on Thursday. Still in original box, with manual. Looks like it has never been used (box top is a bit rough). Actual price was 4, written on the top of the box in sharpie...😡

Neat little Heritage punch set in original rawhide leather pouch found today at an estate sale. Tools marked with Circle G. Anyone know the maker?
