That was my first thought, but then, on a closer look, it seems the paint of the tray matches that of the inside of the drawers. To my uneducated (and unresearched) eye the tray doesn't original to the set.
It is entirely possible that the tray is not original, however, unless the original tray handle would be nearly flush to the tray itself, the top lid wouldn't close. That was my first thought, but then, on a closer look, it seems the paint of the tray matches that of the inside of the drawers.
That cart/box combo appears only in the 1949 catalog. You could buy the cart as a stand-alone item or purchase a tool set that was contained in the cart along with the 2d top chest. The tool set sold in this was a mix of the out-going New Britain stuff along with the in-coming MDF tools. The tray is original to the box. Nice find!guess is later in the period, 55-57ish?
Thanks for your generous insights, JoCo! I always appreciate your expertise on all things Craftsman. That cart/box combo appears only in the 1949 catalog. Who else is picturing JoCo hopping in his truck, cell phone out, typing and sending a PM with a right thumb, as he steers with his left hand out of his driveway?Well, I'm up to 2 of them now but I reckon you are a bit far from az

Well, it appears someone thought it was because it soldAnyone know if this is actually the correct box for these? Thought about bidding, but I have all the guts already, and the ad-copy from '58 (attached) lists a 13/16 and an L that doesn't look like it would fit. Or did someone just cut out the inside of a 1/4" drive box?

Ohh,No clue on the Ell set. I don't think I've ever seen a 3/8d Ell handle.
Picked up this box the other day. At first glance it looks pretty common. Turns out it's a 1958 "Extra Heavy Duty Mechanic's Tool Box". Larger than the standard 6500-series boxes, different tray arrangement along with being constructed out of 16 gauge metal instead of the standard 2g. Throw in the side-mount carry handles and it's a pretty unique box.![]()
Nice calipers. But they are a crown top logo
