The price was just too low to leave this carpenter’s box behind today. It responded well to a little cleanup.

Got my eye on this one at auction ending soon locally, not sure about the tray though and the add on wood ends or for that matter the tray itself...

8-26 sold 40.00

Never seen one with the full folding front door until today! Unfortunately, it will need a good refreshing at a later date. Gonna use it as is for now. Functions ok, but has at least 3 layers of roll on paint. Good thing about the crappy condition is that it only ran me a whopping $2 at the auction today.

Located this Heritage badged Cart and Chest combo. My uneducated guess is later in the period, 55-57ish? Overall in nice original finish, but with some stray paint souvenirs from exposure I suppose. Welcoming the experts in restoration to suggest how I might go about trying to lift these green swatches off of the original hammered gray without losing it, or advice to otherwise leave it alone.

Another interesting thing is the design "flaw" that forces this to have a lift out tray where the handle needs to be folded down in order to close and lock the top chest, and in doing so interferes with tool storage.

That was my first thought, but then, on a closer look, it seems the paint of the tray matches that of the inside of the drawers.
It is entirely possible that the tray is not original, however, unless the original tray handle would be nearly flush to the tray itself, the top lid wouldn't close.

On a completely different subject...
I'm currently in Virginia prepping my rental for a change of tenants and today while driving on I-81N, I passed a semi truck that had a familiar logo. To be fair, I had 20 knots of smash on the guy as I passed him and the logo was on the trailer's rear door. It caught my eye at the last moment and I was only able to read Wind Transportation, but the logo was the spitting image of the complete Craftsman Heritage Badge with the word "Wind" in place of "Craftsman". I googled Wind Transportation and got a lot of wind turbine blade transportation companies but this was a run-of-the-mill enclosed trailer for general hauling. The one hit I got worth pursuing was in Indianapolis, Indiana, but they claimed they don't have any trucks currently in Virginia.

Just a gee-whiz thing, but I thought it was interesting enough to share.

That cart/box combo appears only in the 1949 catalog. You could buy the cart as a stand-alone item or purchase a tool set that was contained in the cart along with the 2d top chest. The tool set sold in this was a mix of the out-going New Britain stuff along with the in-coming MDF tools. The tray is original to the box. Nice find!

Beautiful set. The sockets really have an S-K look about them. I have a sliding tee and short extension.

Here are some Chrome Alloy 3/4” drive tools made by S-K, likely for one of their Brazil sets. Definitely a family resemblance. IMG_6645.jpeg

Picked up this chest at the flea this morning. Fairly common, has a little more honest wear and tear than I would like, but plenty of finish to know it's original, it has the front panel/tray, everything works, everything is there except the tumbler lock, and honestly, it was so cheap I would've bought it just to salvage the badges. I am right in thinking 1952 or thereabouts, right?

I'd say you're correct with the date or at least pretty damned close Lugz. Man that's a nice example of original paint on the inside of that lid. Nice find.

I'm wayyyyyy far from AZ at the moment! I've only seen one pop up east of the Mississippi and I was dumb enough to let it slide through my hands.

This was my first vise many many years ago, 5176. It's been sitting since I caught the vise vice virus via many carriers in GJ and replaced it a Reed. It may be more of a collectable though is quite serviceable as a small vise.

I'll put this in the classifieds for trade. I am looking for Long C combo wrenches (I have 1/2, 5/8 and 11/16) and 3/8" drive Circle U sockets.

When I bought it, it came with the additional pipe jaws that I don't see in the results of a search.

I fixed up one of those that I found on my wife's family farm. It had been in her dad's workshop until her brother replaced it with an import. After the cleaning and painting, I gave it to my sister-in-law for her new shop on her part of the family farm. It is a keepsake from her father, and means a lot to her.

Anyone know if this is actually the correct box for these? Thought about bidding, but I have all the guts already, and the ad-copy from '58 (attached) lists a 13/16 and an L that doesn't look like it would fit. Or did someone just cut out the inside of a 1/4" drive box?

Well, it appears someone thought it was because it sold 😆👍

That is my question to the more collectable-minded amongst us. Did they have different boxes over time (still with Moore) or was the catalog I grabbed the primary design? I have the same style box in 1/2", that does fit an Ell-handle with the deeps.

A while ago, I had a Wanted post about this box, but never heard from anyone, so I don't know if this was it. Catalog doesn't list dimensions (that I saw).

No clue on the Ell set. I don't think I've ever seen a 3/8d Ell handle.

Picked up this box the other day. At first glance it looks pretty common. Turns out it's a 1958 "Extra Heavy Duty Mechanic's Tool Box". Larger than the standard 6500-series boxes, different tray arrangement along with being constructed out of 16 gauge metal instead of the standard 2g. Throw in the side-mount carry handles and it's a pretty unique box.Screenshot 2024-03-01 at 7.46.47 PM.pngIMG_8007.jpegIMG_8008.jpegIMG_8006.jpeg
