Reaching out to the GJ crowd once again.
want to add a chain hoist to an overhead door at the volunteer warehouse to make it easier for the volunteers to open it up. it's 12'wide by 12' high, fairly well balanced. probably could have a 1/4 or 1/2 turn on the spring but it would still be a chore for some of the older folks to open & close.
I do have a chain hoist that would fit the shaft , but I was wondering about the spring tension. does the door need to be "heavy" so the cables don't get loose? I know some doors have pusher springs on them to get them moving. I don't have any pusher or helper springs.
any tips or advise appreciated .

(If I’m interpreting your question properly)
I just installed one of these 4:1 $100 Amazon chain openers on a 9Hx8W door. The spring I received with the door must have been for an 8x9, though, as it ran out of spring travel more than a foot short of full open. Now that I finally installed the chain opener, I cannot tell when the spring quits assisting as the manual opener easily continues to full open with no perceived change in effort.

Does that answer your question?

No, not in my experience (I'm no expert in setting up garage springs). Our chain hoist panel door (12' high) is very very easy to open via chain hoist. Where you're right is you don't want so much spring "help" that the door starts to roll itself up as it goes higher.
