I went to a sale last year that looked really good; two three car garages, the regular two car, basement, etc. Apparently the night before the sale, the executor let some family members in to get some "personal items". Well, they grabbed all the tools and high resale items. The estate sales guy was PISSED. He had spent a lot of time preparing and was also loosing out on a decent percentage from the sales.

It sounded like lawsuits were going to be flying around, as other family members were loosing monies willed to them, the estate sales guy had his contract broken, and so on.

These things are complicated.
Went to one family run estate sale quite a few years back on a Saturday but in talking to what I was assuming was a daughter she said they would have more man stuff on Sunday so stop back. So stop back Sunday morning and a county sheriff's car is now in the driveway 😲 and no signs of a sale. Also seen a few pro estate sales apologizing for canceling the second day of a 2 day sale for who knows why? lawyers involved?, family infighting?, family thinks stuff is priced too low? I'm sure the long time pro estate folks have seen most everything.

A couple years back a guy our family used for a couple of estate sales had a huge tool estate sale and advertised and showed pictures of a bunch of Snap-On stuff. Get there and see no signs of Snap-On stuff so I asked him what's up with that? he just shrugged his shoulders and quietly explained that the family had gone back into the property and hoovered all the Snap-On stuff, I'm sure it wasn't the first time similar things had happened to him. Luckily the sale was huge with remaining stuff being top quality so he probably didn't get hurt too bad.

Thx Saukit - the ax seems to have the original 24" handle, but pretty beat up. and taped end to end with friction tape - Not usre the haft is recoverabe?

You got some Saukit Suckage going on too!

I went back to the Estate sale; -3rd time now, and did some serious book box diving. came home with a box of them, and a few smalls of mostly kitchen stuff again....

she was still pricing things ridiculously low, I don't know if she took my advise yesterday to "double your prices at least", (she was giving things away at a buck for most anything) but I know when I went back yesterday she charged me a fraction of that - Today after I found the few smalls and the box of books, she tried to give them to me (we are on first name basis now...) and I forced a 20 on her. and told her this is for the super under pricing yesterday and for today, and still partial. She was very grateful and still tried to give it back...

Question for BMW! take a look at the book from yesterday, adn please let me know if it is as Rare as I found in a Google-fu search. I'm stunned if true, still happy if not...

A mini Spatula (black on for comparison to a Std one from today) small Tongs (Vaughn USA made - going into camp gear) and a forged craft (steak?) knife (Also destined for Camp gear)- I liked the feel of the steel, and I was right:

Forgecraft knives were made by a company called Washington Forge in the 1950s. They were created for professionals, butchers and chefs, and sold through Kitchen supply stores throughout the US.

Unfortunately, the cheap stainless knives that flooded the market in the 1960s killed Washington Forge and Forgecraft. The last one was made in 1968.

A bag for SWMBO - I could not believe this was still there after all day yesterday with those cheap prices,

Smoke! That is exactly the look of a garage sale I would stop at!
So many baby clothes sales in my usual area, is why I typically prefer flea markets.
Ha Ha, thanks! I sold just over $500 worth of items yesterday. Wife was certainly happy and I was too since it was mostly bits of a haul I pulled last year from an estate sale. I wanted to go to the swap meet but dont think I would have "made" money there :) Wife was so happy and energized that she encouraged an outing today :) See a post further down.

hey wow, following on a theme, I met up with @bmwrd0 at the same swap meet, on Saturday. Arrived about 7, started at the back, and made it to the front by 10, when I had to run to make my next event.

It was nice to put a face to a name, and enjoy a different set of eyes and perspective on why they grab certain things. The vendors themselves were all a pleasure to deal with, unlike some at our regular flea.

Lots of small items, from many different vendors, mostly in the $1-5 range. The big purchase was the 18” firm joint Lufkin caliper, a Starrett whatzit, and a German made PH type screwdriver, from a guy who is the face of the PNTC organization, and hosts many club events at his place. I’ve tried to coordinate work and pleasure trips to hit one of their swap meets. Eventually.

The biggest left behind was a guy had a bunch of Teeny Tiny bicycle wrenches in very nice shape, but with the appropriate price tag. Forgot to take pix.

The X-Acto box is a bit newer, the Starrett bar to the right of it has a broken off thin piece of metal, too thin to be a lathe tool, so Whatzit #1. The next thing under the box is a Plomb stud remover, looks like the two wedges are in it, the next thing looks like a piloted counterbore, a Thorsen 3/8 ratchet, 9/16” Indestro auto wrench, a recessable bench planing stop up to, the German made PH driver, and some thing that looks like it clamps down on something drill bit like, and then brings an edge to it. Two whatzits, yeah.

PXL_20230624_180302488-X3.jpg

The smalls were $5/ bag, so I grabbed 1-1/2 mortise bits, a Craftsman ratcheting right angle driver, flat head and Phillips, 3 brace screwdrivers and a countersink, unmarked and Pexto chisels, felt wheel holder, and a Proto stubby.

PXL_20230624_180848593-X3.jpg
Sorry to have missed you RTM! That would have been nice to put a name to a face as well. That swap meet is always kind to me. Over the years I have met BMW and provincial there for the first time so it would only stand that you would meet a fellow member as well!

With my wife (and my wallet) feeling invigorated by yesterdays tool sale proceeds , we decided to look to see if there were any good sales around here. One had peaked my attention in the nearby countryside thats largely agriculture/farm . Those sales aways have cool stuff and good prices. With my course set and my wife riding along we ventured into the nearby countryside. A quick 20 minute drive in my truck and up a gravel road netted us quite a few treasures. I'm going to resell most of this but I paid $150 for everything including my wife's decorative treasures. Not bad for 1 hours worth of picking.

Contents include
-2 mid chests with keys. No markings....but the holes in the front of them say snap on to me? What do you guys think? They regretably dont have any slides with them but they are super straight.. holes in the fronts where a label was are 5-1/8 on center. (edit: after researching them a bit they are mid 50's snap on KR-420 models). I posted a picture of the catalog screenshot in the vintage snap on thread)

- fab table and vise. Absolutely filthy and greasy but it will be a good bench for someone!

-whole bucket of hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, etc

-2 cool oil cans, 3 automotive hub caps

-huge wood clamps...you can see how big they are with a bucket sitting on top of them

-2 boys axes...not in great shape but what can you say...

-large tray of old files

-And a cool Homelite Buzz saw. Ridiculously unsafe looking but hey it has the look! I'm not sure if this is a desirable model but I wasn't leaving it behind that's for sure. I need to do more research on this saw. Is there a thread for vintage chain saws like this?

Got your own little Animal Farm going there.
I'm still in charge though! :)

Well, we do have an Eastern screech owl as a permanent resident and mascot. :) Always been a critter guy, ever since I was a kid. But anyone who has been here since 2012 or taken the virtual tour knows that! The menagerie includes skulls, jaws, claws, feathers and other bones, too.
Looks from the eyes to be a female?
Definitely. Has the right plastron, and long rear claws, too. On top of that, it just rained, when they are always generally more on the move afterward, and, late June early July is egg laying season. Unfortunately, she died. As you probably know, they have a very small range, living within just a few miles their entire lives. She has no visible signs of being struck by a car. Her shell is intact. Her hinge is intact. No fluids of any kind anywhere. But she was extremely lethargic. She barely responded to stimuli. Listlessly pulling her legs in, barely able to close her hinge. So I do suspect she was struck. Their shells are VERY hard. But I suspect her body got crushed. I moved her to the side of the road she was trying to cross to and watched her. She never moved. After 15 minutes I decided to take her home. If she recovered, I was going to take her back to where I found her. Technically, this is illegal, but I called an area reptile rescue place. I was going to take her there tomorrow. But she just never moved. Eventually, she didn't respond to any stimuli and her eyes glazed over. I will probably bury her for a few months and clean the carcass out and preserve the shell.

Outlaw ***** for that axe, and doubly so if it's a Norlund!

Hit a few sales yesterday and blanked on the first three. The 4th turned out to be pretty good though, they had a big tool box listed for a couple hundred bucks and I figured they wouldn't let me pick through it. After talking to the guy though he was really mellow and didn't really care what I picked out. The prices were also quite reasonable, I paid $25 for everything and probably could have low balled even more but I didn't really feel that was appropriate given how nice these folks were.

Another little clamp vise, this one is pretty rusty but the label is in great shape. Any recommendations on how to de-rust from you vise restoration experts? Normally I'd just dunk it in Evaporust but I'm pretty sure that will destroy the label.

Cool little Ward Master cabinet, has a few drill bits and taps in it.
IMG_4726.jpg

Probably my favorite pick from this sale, I've never seen one of these Buckeye DBEs before and this set has all the sizes from 1-5/8. Need to do some research on these as I have no idea who made them.
IMG_4728.jpg

And the random stuff I picked out of the tool box and off the wrench wall. The bottom DOE is a Plomb 3020, also stoked about the little P&C 2114 DBE.

$25 for all of that????? You Absolutely ****!

I have a similar vise that was in similar condition. I normally use Simple Green and Evaporust, but was worried about the impact to the decal as well (yours looks even better than mine). Following GJ advise (I think it was d42 jeep), I cleaned with Formula 409 and followed up with WD-40 hand applied with 0000 steel wool. I didn’t want to take off any original paint either.

Another double ender, nice find. The padlock resemble a Reese, but I'm not the lock expert here.

Prov- great haul there
Thanks! Lately I've been finding many items that are actually going to be useful in everyday chores. The collectors items are also turning up, and I'm needing to move a lot along to make room!

Sale # 2 I landed a 41-C-15 Cabinet (huge thanks to @Private Lugnutz for the assist on this one) this thing is a beast! Also, these Craftsman chisels. I thought they were cold chisels at first. They are flat ground on the bottom and have a slight curve to them. They feel much lighter than they look. If anyone has any info on these, I'd love to know about them.

Trying to catch up. Found these at a sale a few weeks ago. Ended up passing along a RHFT 1/4 and 3/8 flex to another guy at the sale, who was building a small homeowner box. The Duro set is almost complete, missing the 13 and 16mm from the set. Had to cobble it together from about 4 different sizes. The snap pliers are very similar, one is Duro Chrome, and the other Craftsman. The CM has a design on the side of the handles, the Duro are smooth. Think I had about $20-25 into everything. The set in the metal box is 1/2" CM metric -V-. Most of the ratchets are destined for the trade bin, including the "ribbed for pleasure" Bluepoints...

This week ended up hitting a couple of neighborhood sales with the family. Found a Starrett Last Word for $20, but not much of anything else. Headed home, and saw another sale so we stopped.

On a trailer in the back was an odd contraption, with a "Make Offer" sticker on it. As we all know, these could either be "I want it gone", or "This is super valuable". Thankfully for me, she asked if $20 sounded good. Paid her, and made arrangements to show up later to pick it up with the truck.

When I showed up to pick it up, she said another person had talked with her afterwards, and told her a whole story about what they were used for, etc. According to him, they are worth up to $1500 fully restored. Thankfully, she didn't ask for more money, and I told her it would get put to use with my son and I, not flipped for money.

It is a Snow-Moped, or Sno-Runner. Made by Chrysler for only a few years, this one has the Sno-Rabbit decal showing it was NOS from a company that bought out the remaining stock. 7HP 2-stroke motor, has a couple "skis" and a narrow snowmobile track under the back cover. Should be a fun restore project! Missing pets are in a box that I took when I first paid (including pull coil).

Thanks guys. Some of you may remember the Free Spirit Moped I got last May for free (still in the to be restored pile). My wife says this is the last two-stroke I get for a whole, until all of them are fixed up. Plan for this one is to flush the tank, them try and see if it will run as is (canned 2-stroke to start). They said ran when parked a bit ago, so hopefully it only needs a carb at worst.

Jeffmoss ***** for the Snappy ratcheting driver.

I picked this up last week from Marketplace for $25. Need to fill 6 sockets and an extension or 2. The upside down sockets are SK, but I’ll find SK Wayne to replace them. Only 1/2” SK set I’ll build, takes up a lot of space.
