Just reading thru and noticed the shop vac/chop saw setup, I'm working on a similar setup in my garage but mounted the vac underneath. Best thing I've done on it so far is this auto start switch on the vac so I have no excuse to not use it when I'm only doing "a couple" of cuts...lol
I've had 2 of them for about 2 years...still work great, the cord on one is pulling out of the box/fatigue cord end so at some point I'm going to need to fix that, but functionally still flawless!

Thanks. No, I didnt go out to Jeep Invasion. I think it was either the same weekend as my buddies golf trip, or right before or after. Either way, no way I could do both. I want to make to the Easter Safari at some point. My issue, I really like driving my jeep as a daily and dont really want to tear it up.
Logan, thanks for the recommendation. Just ordered it. Im so glad you sent that, I had no idea it existed. I usually just use the switch on the power strip, but that gets annoying having the vac on all of the time. Cant wait for this to get in an try it out. I am going to move the vac, I just need to get a longer hose or make a couple of cuts to put it in a better spot. I put it there for now, to use it and keep it out of the way. The vac was actually an after thought and i didnt make the shelves big enough.

Between football and golf, I was able to work on the miter saw stand for a few minutes. I started installing the mounts for my vise and bench grinder. Im not sure how I want to mount them. The mounts are designed to work in 2 directions, but Im still finding the best way to use them. Its always tough when you dont have any experience to rely on. I think I will start like this and move them if needed.
The only frustrating thing is the way that I thought best to mount them required me to have to drill new holes in the male side of the mount. It was designed to be mounted on top of a work station and not on the side, but I will make it work. And the painted/powder coating is thick and they do not slide very well in and out. I may have to grind down some material to make them move a little easier.
Im thinking about removing the one on the left side and mounting it to the wall and just use it to store the piece that Im not using. That way I dont have to have both of them mounted or on the cart at all times. I could mount it to store and use it from the wall if needed. As I said, this is the first rolling work station I have ever built or needed so I dont know yet what will work the best for me. I guess thats part of the fun, but for my accountant brain, I try to have it figured out before execution and when I dont, i get a little frustrated. Oh well, back to it.
Also, you may notice a Wall Control box in the back ground. A peg board wall will be in progress very soon. I like having a back log of projects. That will keep me busy and out of trouble.

Thanks for stopping by. First off, go to your counties agricultural extension agent or agricultural services group and have them test your soil. I have done that every few years. Early on, since my lot was mostly wooded, I had to put down a lot of lime. Now I only have to use lime in the fall. I generally get all of my supplies from Southern States. If you don't have a Southern States, they are an Agricultural Coop and very similar to a Tractor Supply. They lean more towards a feed and supply store than the commercial Tractor Supply. I also utilize amazon for my liquid chemicals if SS doesn't have them.
Fall: I start in mid to late September with mowing lower and lower. I normally mow at 3.5-4 inches and move that down to 2.5-2.0 right before I aerate. I will aerate in the last 2 weeks of September. I usually go over the yard twice. I have to wait for the fall rains to soften the yard so that the aerator isn't just bouncing on top of the ground. My yard is 55,000 square feet, so I use 6 40lb bags of lime. I usually put all of my chemicals out between rain and a potential storm. I try to beat any of the hurricanes that we may get to let them do the watering for me. I then will put out 6 50lb bags of fertilizer. Again, I usually buy the SS house brand of fertilizer usually in a 12-4-14. One of my buddies who owns a landscape company told me the rule of thumb is 50 pounds should cover 10,000 sq ft. So, I have always bought the same amount of bags every year. I know there is a formula out there to calculate it exactly based on the Nitrogen, I think, but I just listened to my buddy. Then I over seed with 50lbs to 100lbs of Fescue Seed and another 50lbs of Perennial Rye. The Rye will come up quick and then the fescue will come in a little slower. I get the rye grass from my buddy, who gets it from a commercial landscape supply, like SiteONe. The fescue is usually the commercial blend from Southern States. They also have a southern blend formulated at NC State that is geographically specific to our area. I used it for the first time this year and it was supposed to be heat and drought tolerant, spoiler alert, it wasnt. I used to top it all off with straw or the straw mats, but after a bad experience, I switched to peat moss. I borrow a peat moss spreader and cover all of the seedlings with a light layer and then add water. I will wait a couple of week and then address any spots that dont take root. I will usually tear up the soil with a cultivator and then add more seed and peat moss.
Spring: The Spring is basically the same, except, no Lime. Usually beginning in Feb or early March. I try to time it so that all fertilizer is down before the ACC basketball tournament. Can you tell I live in NC? I think I use a 24-8-16 all in a slow release pellet. I use a fertilizer with preemergent, again usually a SS product that has Barricade in it. Unless, my buddy has some leftover from a job or two. He will often just drop off some leftovers for me. For a post emergent, I will use Tenacity with a Surfactant in a 20 gallon pull behind sprayer. I get that on Amazon. I usually do that in April/May depending on the weed growth and the health of the lawn. I don't want to do it too early and hurt the yard, but not too late either. It really just depends on the weather.
In general, I try not to do too much seeding or repair in the spring and summer and just wait until fall to fix it for the next year. This year I have some areas that really took a beating with the heat and lack of rain. Those areas may get tilled and some compost/topsoil added in before I do the seeding.
Also, I dont buy anything for my yard at a big box store. I use mostly Southern States(Co-op) for the seed and fertilizers or my local landscape supply place for my mulch and stone. Those are both locally owned and I have been going there for years.

Another wall complete! I spent all day in the shop yesterday. Well, most of the day. I was able to knock out the entry wall where I store all of my brooms and things. I wired in a new outlet, because my electrician ran out of outlets when he finished up a year ago. For a year I have heard, "I will swing by and put one in tomorrow", and for a year it hasn't been done. I wonder if I can charge him for an hour of my time.
This was also my first work with my rolling work station. Im really liking it so far.
I also moved the compressor and hose reel that was in my attached garage. I was able to wiggle it out of its orginal location and it needed a severe cleaning. I whipped out my detailing supplies and got it cleaned up for its new space. Im not sure I like it sitting out like this, but it will have to do. Maybe once I get the pressure washer and wall mount shop vac installed, it will not look so lonely. The hose reel and the new retractable extension cord are installed, but maybe not in the final spot. I don't think I like where I mounted everything for now. Im thinking about moving them closer to the door, but I think once I start using them i will get a better feel for everything. Again, once I put in the pressure washer, I will optimize that area, but for now, its functional.
I still have to install the pegboard wall, but what's another line on the to do list.

So true. The guy does great work. He's a young guy who just got is license in the last couple of years and was an apprentice for the company that wired my house, and his mom is an electrical engineer who used to do code enforcement and inspections for the county. He knows his stuff, but has a young family and just bought a house, so he stays busy. Also, after my job, my home builder, who is a friend of mine came by to look at the shop and loved his work so much that he contracted him to do the electrical in the new houses that he builds. So, I am also part of the reason he stays so busy. But, it still burns me up that he didnt come back to do that one outlet. Oh well, fixed it and now there are way bigger problems in the world to occupy my thoughts. Like, what pressure washer am I going to buy.
Ya that, I'll come back in a few days thing...I had that with my contractor and although i'm sure I could have kept asking and gotten thw remaining items done, sometimes for small things its just easier to do them then keep asking. Not a big deal so lomg as the other work was good and not too many items remain.

I have played over 40 rounds of golf this year. By far its the most I have ever played in one year and its still going. I didnt really plan on this much, but Im not complaining. We played Southern Pines Golf Club last week and it was perfect. If you are in to golf, its one of Pete Dye's earliest designs and was reconstructed just 2 years ago. It was a fantastic course and one that I would highly recommend if you like golf and are ever in the area.

And now for the shop updates. I am working to get the lower 8 feet of wall completed all of the way around the shop. Its tough balancing the shop work with everything else, but it feels good to get back in there. I have a feeling as the days get shorter and weekends get less busy, I will be out there more. Anyway, I got a few more sections of wall framed in and plywood hung. I ran out of insulation so Im stuck for now, but I then focused on some other shop stuff.
First off, I used my new workstation set up to regrip some golf clubs. This made me so happy. I have always done my own club regripping so I ordered this tool a while ago. Now that the vise has a home, I was finally happy to break it out. It is so much easier using this set up.
I was able to set up my miter saw station and start working on the back wall. I had previously stopped at the right window, when I ran out of plywood. Now, Im out of insulation. Oh well, I will get there soon. I was able to frame up the left window and hopefully learned a little from when I framed up the right side.

I also mounted the pegboard. I used leftover pieces of plywood as mounting bases, just to give the screws a little more to dig into.

Southern Pines is a great course. I have played it a few times over the years. Thanks D, you know as well as I do, its a process. Once I started with it in one area, I thought I might as well keep it up, and if ever I decide I dont like it, I can always paint it.
That was the first time playing it for me, but its definitely one of my favorites now. Im am a little spoiled being only 45 minutes from that area so I get to play a lot of courses around Pinehurst. I save the pricier spots for special occasions.

I started with most of my wood working/building tools to keep them where I can get to them and also out of the tool box drawers. Most of that stuff had found a home on the workbench top or in the rolling cart. It was good to find a home for all of it. I got the regripping set-up on a hanger and most of the tools that I need for that are in arms reach. Im pleased with how its looking so far. I really need to steal your dog fencing solution. Looks way more functional without messing with the watering. I have been using metal garden fence sections left by the previous owner at my property but they get in the way too much and don't fully keep the dogs out. Very good setup you have come up with. Its cheap and easy. Deer netting, some stakes, and the cheap edging fence from Lowes. I have to buy a few more sections every once in while. The only problem I end up having is later on, like now, the deer fence sags enough as the grass is growing that the dogs will walk on it and mat it down. Now they are laying on it. But, they cant dig in it, so its still doing its job.

Its just Morton's included protection against damage from something at the floor level. Its just added to prevent damage to the metal from a potential bump from a car or tractor, or whatever you keep inside the shop. Im pretty sure its standard on all of their buildings.
Im pretty sure that if you wanted to add some sort of masonry, you would have to design it to do so up front.

A few weeks ago, I was able to play in a charity golf tournament and participated in the silent auction and "won" a new stone firepit from a local landscape supply company. Well, this weekend, since we had wonderful temperatures for December, I picked it up. It was ready on a pallet and since I needed my truck on Sunday, I had to get everything off. I figured I only wanted to move the stones once on Saturday, so I decided at 4pm that it was going to get done on Saturday. Unfortunately, the spot that will be the permanent home is not yet ready, so I put it where I could use it until then.
Also, you can see in the first few pictures that I broke a few of the pavers, I did replace them. They are not fire brick, but I dont plan on this being the final resting place and they will be more than fine for the current needs.

No steel liner supplied with that kit? Most of those concrete stone manufacturers advise not for high heat use so they put a liner on them.

The fire pit looks good and is always a nice thing to have around. One of my favorite places to be in the fall.
Thanks, I actually have 2 large projects upcoming. I am planning on building a rock patio over beside my shop and will be putting the fireplace there, once it is complete. The problem was, I didnt realize it was going to be on a pallet, so I decided that if I had to take it off the pallet, i might as well put it together and use it. I am also about to go and price a stone fireplace for my back patio. My wife has been talking about one for a while now and when I went to pick up the fire pit, they had some nice ones at the landscape supply center. I think I should have left her at home.

I have always liked the look of outside fireplaces in addition to fire pits. Would it be a standalone or would you put up a roof over that section of the patio with it? You could then hang a TV over it and watch sports outside by the fireplace if you are into that thing. Other thing I always thought was cool about them is you can integrate a pizza oven into them.
Anyways look forward to seeing how you go about those two in the coming years.

With college fast approaching for my daughter, I am trying to do things a little more on a budget, but to my very high standards. So, that being said, I will not be adding any additional structure. Im lucky to already have the screened in porch, which we use 7-8 months out of the year. We rarely use the patio, so we were wanting to add something to that area to make it more usable. It will be stand alone and it is a DIY Stacked stone kit.
it looks small in the photo, but its about 5ft wide and 4ft deep and about 7ft tall. We are not adding the boxes at first, but may add them later. We are planning on putting on the corner of the patio at a 45. We are thinking about a small knee wall on each side instead.

That is a good sized outdoor fireplace. I think it would definitely make it a great place to hangout outside like you are looking for.
We really liked it when we were there. Im waiting to get a price and a delivery date. It is a kit and comes on 2 or 3 pallets. I just have to pour a pad and then start stacking. I am going to start the pad this weekend. Im going to do a quickrete pad with some rebar. It doesnt have to be pretty, just need it to support the block and not sag.

I misunderstood your previous post. Didn't realize you were moving forward that quickly with it. That will be awesome. Hopefully, they can deliver it quickly and you can get some use out of it before it gets too cold out.
