My wife's got a JK as well, and man that OEM head unit is garbage. Hoping to swap it for something with Android Auto at some point. Need to do the same in my ZJ too.

No kidding. I finally had it with that stock ****. It was so finicky when switching audio sources. I kept it for so long because I wanted to keep the stock steering wheel controls. I have replaced the radios in my surburban, my truck, and my daughters 4Runner. All of which had steering wheel controls, and all were fairly simple. I really was just being cheap as well. It worked so I dealt with it, until I finally had enough. I had been looking over the last few years and it seemed like every time I decided to buy a radio, either it was out of stock, or backordered. I just put it on the back burner until a few weeks ago.

Took a few minutes this weekend for some shop and work bench upgrades. I have been waiting on a corner mount for my tv as well as some longer HDMI Cables to arrive. They finally got here, and I had time to run the wire from the source, up and over my garage door, and through the wall to the tv. Mounted the TV and I think it turned out great.

IMG_3968.JPEGIMG_3969.JPEGIMG_3971.JPEG

Also, I had ordered a few storage bins before Christmas along with some mounting strips. The bins arrived but the mounting strips were backordered. They also arrived this week. I was able to mount one last night just to test it out to see how I would like it. It really helped to clean up my detail chemicals area.

IMG_3976.JPEGIMG_3975.JPEGIMG_3977.JPEG

Purchased more lumber to continue on finishing a few more wall panels. I have some plans to do a peg board wall to store some more tools and also another section of shelving to hold storage bins and other big tools.

IMG_3972.JPEG

Last week, when I installed the new radio in the Jeep, I forgot to upgrade the Sirius tuner, so I had to take it all apart again, but I love having the room to do so. It was a fairly quick and easy fix. I also installed a dash cam, since my wife gave it to me 2 years ago. In all fairness, I had a cracked windshield at the time and then proceeded to have it replaced 3 more times over a 18 month stretch. I finally got it mounted, one more thing off the list.

Chris,
I just went through all of your posts. I really like what you've done. It looks great. I have just gotten a 40 x 60 x14 , with an attached 16 x60 shed dried in and started a little wiring. I went with a "pole barn " style, and I'm happy with it.
Would you mind sharing some info on your high bay lights and the ceiling fan ?
Both are items I'd like to add soon.

Rufus, The high bays are from Atlas Lighting Products. My electrician buys from them since they are locally produced. I cant tell you exactly which ones that I bought. I let him put together the lighting plan with them based on square footage and coverage required. They came up with a plan and installed them accordingly.

The corner work area is coming along nicely. My eagle eyes spotted the Meguiars and Adams polishing products in the chemical bins. Good stuff.
Thanks East. I also really like the 3D products as well. I use their one step, 3D One, and absolutely love it. It has become my go to. I also use their metal polish and vinyl/leather conditioner. Check them out.

This weekend I started finishing some more wall space. I am not a framer, nor do I know a ton about framing a wall, but I think I did ok in my first attempt. Check that, second attempt. I started to build this wall like I had done with the wall behind the workbench, but I realized that all of my electrical was fairly rigid and I could not move it. The previous was already installed at a depth to work with my workbench plans. So instead of building the wall outside of the post frame, I decided to build the wall inside the post frame. I did so as you would with traditional framing and started on the ground and lifted it into place and secured it to the posts.

IMG_3994.JPEGIMG_3996.JPEGIMG_3997.JPEGIMG_3999.JPEGIMG_4001.JPEGIMG_4002.JPEGIMG_4008.JPEG

I hung one sheet of plywood and started measuring for the electrical boxes and the dinner bell wrang. I never made it back out to do any more work last night.

However, I did mount some more of the mounting strips for the storage bins. I mounted them where I thought I could utilized the space better. I added one under my bench to double up the room on the shelf below. I also mounted one beside the one that I hung last week to add smaller bins. Finally, I put one under my charging station to get the bins off of the bench top. These can all be moved, if I find that I dont like how they are mounted.

Looking great Chris. I love your version of the “mini split” on the 5gal propane tank! I’m sure it helps a bunch the way it has been the last couple of weeks here.
Keep the pictures coming.

Just came across this one. Great looking shop! Lots of parallels to my own Morton build (albeit smaller), following along now for ideas I can use. Also, I love the Corvette.

Thanks Rick. That burner works great in a 5ft area. I really just used it to warm my hands or to knock the chill off. Its certainly better than nothing.

Well, I have to say, Im extremely disappointed with the Ballistix flooring solution. I have documented all of my problems with it here, and now we will be adding another. Now water is penetrating the surface. It has been very rainy over the last few weeks here in NC. Where my daughter parks her car has had water standing off and on for over 4 days straight. The floor is now showing dark spots under the finished layer. The run off from her car has seeped through the protective layer and is now darkening the concrete underneath.

I have seen other posts with the same issues and now mine is doing the same. I thought I did a ton of research and found the perfect product for my solution. It wasn't until I had already started the process that I had some red flags. To say I'm extremely disappointed would be an understatement. The bad thing is the amount of time it takes to do the floor the right way and then to have a product that appears to be failing at everything it is advertised to do is extremely frustrating.

As before, I have reached out to Armor Poxy to let them know. And of course, I have not received any kind of response. I will probably have to reach out a few times before I hear anything back, which seems to be the norm. Its funny when you are inquiring to make a purchase, they quickly reply, but if you have a problem, you have to beg for a response. Im very interested to hear what they have to say this time.

IMG_3989.JPEGIMG_3990.JPEGIMG_3992.JPEGIMG_3993.JPEG
Just an FYI, that boot print in the last photo was left by the concrete guys. I have a couple of those that I could never get off. Im assuming it happened when they walked on the freshly set up concrete to cut the expansion joints. Nothing I did would remove it.

Chris walls look great! ***** about the flooring especially with the cost and effort of applying it!!

With the walls, I don’t recall…………do you plan on insulating above the walls that you have completed? If not, do you think you will lose a lot of heat not completely insulating? If that makes any sense? I may do something similar. Thanks.

Scott, Yes I plan on finishing the top part of the wall. I just wanted to get the lower 8ft done so that I can build all of my storage shelves and any other work areas that I want to start using. Also, I havent decided what I want to do on the ceiling. I havent made a decision on either spray foam the inside of the roof panels and keeping the trusses open, or installing a ceiling and doing blow in insulation. That will determine the upper walls. Im leaning towards putting in a ceiling and doing the blow in insulation, but I keep seeing different things so I cant make up my mind. I hope that makes sense. Also, doing the lower walls now, gives me some more protection since Im going to be setting up a hitting net for my daughter to hit softballs and me to hit golf balls.

Thanks Chris. Makes perfect sense, lots of options……..

I have to replace my geothermal system and had the company out yesterday to see what options we have. Shop upgrades will definitely be on hold.

Oh no. That will definitely not be cheap. But, what do they need to replace? The heat exchanger and the topside equipment, or will you have to do the inground stuff as well? Good lord, my wallet is hurting just thinking about it. We had to replace our entire HVAC system about two years ago. We built our house 12 years ago, so my 2 Heat Pumps only lasted 10 years. It was almost as much as buying a new car.

Yeah, wasn’t planning on spending this money……….but peace of mind having an entirely new system will be nice.

It started out with a problem with my pumps for the radiant floor (long story) and ended with best option to disable radiant heat and replace the entire system.

Replacing everything above ground. Also replacing water heater, for the cost no sense in not having everything new.

I can understand that. That is the same reason we replaced both heat pumps. One was done and the other was ok, but not great. I chose to go ahead and do both to get better pricing and to reset everything at the same time.

Good luck with everything.

I was able to get a little bit done in the shop this weekend. I finished up this section of the wall. I will be finishing the entire lower part and then starting on the upper part of the wall. Im just going to have to do it slowly. Im not in a rush to finish it to better manage the outflow of funds. IMG_4022.JPEGIMG_4023.JPEGIMG_4024.JPEGIMG_4025.JPEG

I was finally able to get out and clean up a couple of vehicles this weekend. It was nice to wash the cars outside and then pull them inside to finish up the cleaning. I actually washed 3 cars, but just took a couple of quick pictures. I had been able to wash cars, but its nice to be able to pull them inside after dark and really clean the inside.

Looking great! The plywood on the walls really nice, live the detail.

I hear you about the outflow of funds!
I'm in the same situation. I kind of realized after the fact how expensive it is to take an unfinished building and make it 'finished'. Luckily if your like me you don't have all that much time either, so the cash outlay might not hold you up that much since you can only get so much done in the time you have available.

Life is crazy as well. Just when you have time to do things, you dont have the money and when you have the money, you dont have the time. Remember when I broke that tooth and had to have a root canal. Well that wasnt cheap, and now I need a crown so that is going to slow down the progress real fast. I had almost pulled the trigger on a golf launch monitor and new hitting surface. So glad I didnt, because this tooth stole all of that money.

Yep, life always throws curve balls when you don't expect it. Financial and otherwise!
Anyway the way I look at it as long as for the most part I'm enjoying my time in the shop it doesn't really matter all that much how quick it gets done. But I do one day look forward to working in my shop rather than on it!

I agree. Im in a comfortable spot with the shop. I can use it for things I had always planned to use it for and at the same time spend time working on it to get it where I want it.

No real updates on the shop. We have been busy doing a ton of things, but none involved the shop. Hopefully, soon I can get back in and post some updates.

We were out in the driveway just the other night and my daughter grabbed this photo of the sky. It was around dusk and it just looked pretty dang cool, so I thought I would share.
IMG_4045.JPEG

My daughter has been begging me to take her shooting, so last weekend, the weather cooperated and we went and shot some ***** and plinked around with her 22 rifle, but she begged me to bring the AR since she has never fired it. Well, as you can see, now she has. It was a fun day and was very educational. My FIL has a bit of farmland and we set up a small range at the back of one of his pastures and tend to go out every once in a while.

IMG_4054.JPEG

With Softball season cranking up again and my daughters injuries starting to subside, I brought in the turf to make her a hitting area in the shop. I had stored it under the lean to of my garden shed, but it had a ton of moisture trapped in it. We covered it in baking soda and carpet deodorizer and I laid it over the work stands, trashcans, buckets and any thing else I could find to get it off the ground to get air moving under it. Once it dries we will move around some cars and find a permanent home for it.

IMG_4056.JPEG

Also, for some reason, my daughter and her friend thought it would be fun to camp out in the shop this weekend. They packed up the back of the truck with an air mattress and tons of blankets and stayed out there all night. The temps overnight were around the high 40's to low 50's, so not terribly cold, but certainly not warm. I had a bet with my wife that they would be in by morning. Well, when I left to play golf, imagine that, they were still there and apparently stayed out there most of Sunday as well. When I got home the group had grown larger and they were all watching a movie out there. Teenagers. Needless to say, I had to do the dishes last night.

IMG_4065.JPEG

Finally, because of our crazy weather, I had to mow my yard yesterday. I havent even had a chance to put out the spring fertilizer or the preemergent. The bad thing is, it was almost too high. I should have mowed a week ago. It amazes me that California is under snow and we are in the 60s and 70s in February.

"Kids in a blanket"....so cool. They look very happy there!
Thanks for stopping by. Yep, it was their idea and still cant believe they stayed out there all night. They even had friends come by and bring them breakfast in the morning. They were all there when I got back from the course. Crazy kids.

Thanks D. You know how much work I put in to that lawn. Its just crazy that its so early this year. Like I said, I havent even put out my spring chemicals yet. And, I had planned on doing my mower maintenance before the first cut this year, but that hasnt happened yet either. Here in the south we call this time False Spring, because usually, we will get another cold snap.

Nice to see the kids out there in the shop, and on the range. It is coming together.
My 13yo son and some friends wanted to "hang out" in Pittsboro on Sunday so they got dropped at S&T (closed of course). Not sure what they did for a couple of hours, but I never heard from the Sheriff, so it was all good. Teens stretchin' their legs I guess.

I just got caught up on your thread. You and that Ballistix sure aren't getting along well. But time with the daughter's is well spent.

I know what you mean about being able to clean vehicles inside. I got to wash my truck properly for the first time in 2+ years. I started and finished in the evening and it was nice to get out of the cold.

East, Welcome back. Hopefully you will post some updates to your thread soon.

It is certainly nice to clean a vehicle inside. Originally, I wanted to put a lean to on the right side of my shop and make that a dedicated wash bay, but I decided that the cost was not feasible. I have plenty of hoses, so I just wash outside and then move them inside to finish the cleaning. Its really going to be nice to have room to move around the cars when it comes time for some paint correction and polishing. That will be late spring or early summer, we have a terrible pollen season here in the south and there is no reason to do that kind of work right now.

As for the Ballistix, Im just extremely disappointed in both the product and the Distributor. If I had a little crazy Karen in me, I would "Paul Revere" it all over this board. And I still may, if they dont do anything about it. I just cant believe that the few of us on this forum that have had issues are outliers. The original cost was not extremely high, but I felt like in my research it was a value and would be perfect and now it just gives me a little heartburn in the shop. Its not the end of the world by any means, but still aggravating.

Hello all, again, I have a post with nothing really to do with the shop. Just more life stuff. I really haven't had the time to spend in the shop lately. Now that we are full in with high school softball that has us moving and shaking 3 to 4 days a week. Then our weekends have been spent running errands and for me just doing yard work. We did get a weekend to go down to our family beach condo last week for St. Patrick's Day, but there are no photos of that.

The better part March, April, and May will be spent on the softball field. I am an assistant coach this year and am working with our team to help with hitting and defensive alignment. Our school hired a new head coach this year, and he asked me to help out since I had coached many of these young ladies in the past. I was able to get this photo the other night during the national anthem. We also have a student photographer that comes to many of our games and he shared some of his action shots of my daughter.

IMG_4098.JPEGIMG_4564.JPEGIMG_4568.JPEGIMG_4626.JPEG

This time of year, my yard looks the best, and I will probably take and post lots of pictures. I was able to get out over the last few weeks and trim up all of the landscaping around the house as well as cut in the beds and start cleaning up all of the weed growth and over seed spread. Mulching the beds will be the next big project, but that will come in the next few weeks. I still need to spray my post emergent in the yard to kill all of the weeds that got in over the winter. I should have time to do that this week considering our temperatures are supposed climb to the 80s by end of week. Crazy since it was 48 yesterday.

IMG_4126.JPEGIMG_4127.JPEGIMG_4128.JPEG

That snowball bush is about to explode with blooms. Its done well with the freezes over the last few nights, hopefully it still blooms out.

IMG_4129.JPEG

I was able to sneak out on Saturday morning for a round of golf. We had a ton of rain on Friday evening and overnight and the course was absolutely drenched. Of course my ball ended up in the greenside bunker right in the middle of the puddle. At least that was the ball I hit from the tee.

Nice to see the Northwood girls playing. We’ve been attending some Seaforth baseball games as that is where my son will be going in a year and a half. NW plays Seaforth April 6. My wife may pull out hereNW colors for that one.
Yard looks fantastic. Which course were you playing?

Hey Rick, Yeah its been good to get back out there. When they split NW to create Seaforth, athletics really took a hit for both schools, well except for basketball. NW got killed because we are still in 3A and lost half of the school. We are dropping to 2A next year and will be in the same conference with all of the other county schools. Almost all of our programs, just like Seaforth, do not have JV teams because of the split. Its been a crazy 2 years. A lot of my daughters friends moved over there, and she gets the benefit of going to both's schools Homecoming dances and other social events. Those pictures are actually from the NW vs Seaforth game at NW.

I dont belong to any course so I tend to play anywhere around here. That picture was from the 17th green on Chapel Ridge, looking back at the fairway and tees. It was crazy wet and cart path only. That is not a course that you want to walk a lot on.

Not a lot of shop content again this week. We hosted an invitational softball tournament at my daughter's high school so that took up all of my Saturday. I think I was at the field from 7:30AM to 9:30PM. It was a long day. I know, if its not softball its golf. Well, that is how I feel too, but you know there are worse things.

Snowball bush watch is on. This thing has gotten huge and its just about to pop. I got that photo yesterday evening as we were walking back from my FIL's house next door. I also thought it was a good opportunity to get the shop in the background. Its too wet to mow, so I will have to get that done in a couple of days.

IMG_4153.JPEG

With Sunday being a complete washout for outdoor activities, I turned my attention to a project that I have been planning for a while. When we built the house we had a tray ceiling installed in our master bedroom. In the tray there is a switched outlet and 12 years ago, we had rope lights installed. Rope lights, the LED light strip predecessor. They had so many burned out spots, I bought LED strips to replace them about a year ago. I finally had the time to pull them all out and install the LEDs. I also replaced the smoke detector while I had the big ladder in the house.

Here is the outlet with the power and the controls for the LED strips.

These lights had an adhesive backing and I vacuumed the dust out of the trays and wiped them down with alcohol and stuck them to the inside edge of the tray, and faced them towards the wall on the 45.

Of course they have many different colors and brightness's. It was a definite upgrade from the old rope lights.

I guess I lied in my original statement, I did do a little work in the shop. During the tournament this weekend, it poured down rain, so I took the time to grab my daughters glove and dry it out. While it was out of her bag, I was able to apply a couple of coats of conditioner.

The new lights in your bedroom look great, very cool accent I had installed something similar in the primary bedroom of our last house.
