I'm almost at the painting stage and would like to know what you guys use. Eggshell, satin, flat, what and why?

For my garage I will be using gloss on the doors and trim (for easier clean up).

Semi-gloss on the walls and ceiling. Cleans up easier and reflects a little more light than flat. Flat is also difficult to clean, should you feel the need to do so.

Painting what?

If you are talking about garage walls, ultra gloss or if I really have to semi-gloss.

The flat, satin, etc sure you can wipe down, but that is meant more for general dust/dirt, not you forgot to put the power steering line back on and shot a qt of oil on the wall. Not to mention it doesn't hold up well at all to grinding sparks, like the wall near a bench.

If it's a working garage, exterior semi-gloss.

Flat and eggshell are good for inside the house, though.

The flatter the finish, the more it will hide imperfections. If you did a real nice job of spackling, sanding and priming, you can use a glossier finish.

I concurr with Jack.

I'll add that I use a very light color from chest high up to the ceiling to reflect and bounce the light around. Helps to dispurse it. On the ceilings I use "Ceiling Paint"; which is labeled that way and is a reflective white. Two coats of that over primer.

Lastly-Two coats of primer on the walls and then one full wet coat of color gives me the best results and the primer is cheaper than top coat anyways. I prime, caulk and top coat-in that order. If you are planning on stripes-the Frog Tape is worth the extra pennies IMO.

Hope this helps

For my garage I use exterior gloss oil based paint, inside and out. It looks brighter and cleans easier than the dull finishes.

What part of the PNW are you? If you are in Portland, get Metro Paint. Its the best bang for the buck, especially for garage use. Its a blend of recycled paint, both interior and exterior. Its around and eggshell sheen, and is very durable.

(for my walls inside the garage) Eggshell. It scrubs well when you need to clean something off of it...I don't care for semigloss which (for me) is usually a bit too glossy. Just a personal preference.

Not to get too far off topic...I second that recommendation from Stargeezer, on the frogtape. Just finished painting my walls w/stripes and man, did that stuff work wonders. I still did the standard trick of painting the tape edge with the underlying color first, since my walls are textured. Perfect edges...Some pics in the post above and in the thread at the link below.

My walls are white already, but I am getting ready to freshen them up.

I sorted all the cans of white/or darn close to white I have and found an almost full gallon of white at my folks house. My plan is to grab a clean 5 gallon pail and a couple autobody supply paint funnels and pour them all into the 5 gallon bucket, guessing I have close to 4 gallon and figured I'll buy a fifth gallon and pour it into the pail and start painting.

Should give me plenty of paint to recoat over white but the sheen will be a bit of mystery. Of course if I ever have to match it I am screwed.

You won't get latex paint to strain through auto body paint strainers (unless you have a LOT of time on your hands, LOL)...Your local paint store should have the strainers you need (much coarser mesh)

They are on swan Island. 5gal is $39, or $9 by the gallon. You can also get it at Miller paint, but its a bit more ($45 if memory serves) They 15 stock colors and 'recipies' to mix many more yourself.

I used it to paint our rental in Raleigh Hills with great results. I was impressed with the quality/coverage, so much in fact that Im planning on getting it for the house Im building in California.

Behr barn paint from home depot. It's an exterior latex that is brighter than flat but has no glare. Couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Normal price is 50 for five gallons. I got mine on sale for 30.
