So I didn’t do a great job cleaning up the garden/yard this summer. The constant swings in weather, temps shifting and then rain had me spending my time on more meaningful projects. That brings me to my dilemma. I have a beautiful catalpa tree in my side yard. It drops seed pods on that creat some incredibly invasive new trees. They are a bear to pull out, and while I’m no weakling I have several throughout my front garden beds That I can’t get a good pull enough to get the roots out.

I remembered seeing a jawed tool you chained to an atv to pull out similar to a pallet puller, so I went looking and accidentally came across these jawed prybar tools that look interesting. The two I‘m looking at are the Pullerbear and the Uprooter. Do these things really work like the videos on youtube? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one locally, so I’m not sure if they are a gimmick or the real deal. Hoping that there is a someone out there with real world experience, I’m getting tired of brushcuttering them down and having the pop back up.

I watched the Uprooter video; very impressive.

For small weeds, I like a triangle hoe. It gets down underneath the roots and yanks the whole weed out.

If I can't find a short one, I'll buy a long one and cut the handle off to about the length of a framing hammer.

I have an Uprooter, bought it from the factory, (ok, shop) on my last trip to Portland. It works good, where it fits. I had a mass of maybe 20 sprouts coming out into one Mass just didn't work well there. But grabbing a single big sprout and pulling it out it's a star. Don't get the little one. And replace the cotter pins with hair clip pins for easier storage in two small pieces.

Brush grubber is the toothed clamp thing on a chain for the atv. I've looked at them, but without someone to help, it would be a PIA to get off the machine each time.

I have one, and you're absolutely correct. A lot of getting on and off the tractor. I'm by myself doing this kind of work so it is what it is. Many times, it's easier to wrap a chain or strap around the base of the bush or tree, and connect it to either the front end loader or the rear three-point hitch-both which I can operate while standing on the ground next to the tractor.

I forgot, I have a Pullerbear. It does work as shown. It's built really solid. You have to order from Canadia so customs holds things up.

Puller bear is sold. And works as advertised. I got the biggest one. It’s a bit of a beast to haul around. It will pull anything until it’s out of the ground or the plant breaks.

Thanks for the replies, some if the things they pull in the videos aren’t very deeply rooted. The stuff around I’d want this for is beyond what you can easily hand pull, but too small for a choker or chain. The triangle hoe is a good idea, I don’t see those around these parts or PA, but I’ll keep an eye out. Only issue is the catalpas seem to grow back if there are roots left behind. Hoping one of the lever type tools gets out more than I usually get out.

I’m a big fan of the weed wrench. Pulls Scotch Broom up by the roots in one move.
So, talking to the Uprooter guy, he took over the Weed Wrench business when that guy wanted out. I think he still sells leftover stock of the Weed Wrench, but the Uprooter is improved, per him.

So Uprooter = Weed Wrench. Good to know
I watched the video and any improvements must be minor. That tool looks just like the weed wrench I have used.

Those puller in the videos appear to be used, when the ground is pretty moist/soft, so the sprouts would pull out relatively easy regardless. Looks like a handy tool, though. I just whack the roots around the larger ones, with and axe and they come out nicely.

Hooking something up with a chain to an ATV, sounds more than a bit dangerous, if it slip off. :dunno:

The problem I have is that the roots are tenacious and will regrow a sapling if I don’t get them mostly out. A quick chop job doesn’t work, and it becomes a game of whack a mole.
