Elmer: if you have more old metal cabinets (not standard toolboxes cause there's another thread for those) then post them up with more pictures and more brand and size details cause we'd all like to see if there is one out there that we need to put on our wish lists.

ALL: i'll probably just wipe down with BLO after a little WD40 or cleaning on my old cabinets, but I just might spend some time this winter painting some (or all) of my old cabinets army green flat. I know it's been mentioned before, but what is the best ARMY GREEN FLAT paint available? also anybody have a method of krinkle painting old metal cabinets or toolboxes do tell. one of our members sprayed on a wrinkle paint and then his favorite color on a few of his vises that looked pretty nice? Kennedy does do a nice brown version on their toolboxes. I'm not sure who else does?

I'm still really bummed about a couple of custom control tower cabinets that got sent to scrap at work a few years ago. I was getting ready to bring them home, new manager came in and sent them off without checking with anyone. They'd have made awesome lockers for the garage.

You've probably posted it before, but I'm curious to see a close-up of that oval metal tag on the coolass cabinet you just posted with the variety of drawer sizes and the hotel lobby mail slots.
I know it's been mentioned before, but what is the best ARMY GREEN FLAT paint available?
@d42jeep and I favor Signal Corps Green, Type I, from Midwest Military. But I will hasten to add that it's expensive and only worth it if you really care about the shade, which is the closest anyone has found to being period correct wartime in a rattle can. In other words, if you're just painting any old chests and cabinets that color because you like it, I would use other choices you can find at HD or Lowes etc.

I have used Rustoleum Specialty Camouflage 'Army Green' 1920830, Rustoleum Specialty Camouflage 'Deep Forest Green' 621128, a mix of Rustoleum 284986 Satin Eden and Rustoleum 249127 Flat Black (for techniques), and Krylon Satin Touch 'Italian Olive' 53522. Rustoleum also makes an 'Oregano' 240263 that is a little too light for my taste. A little closer to old hospital decor than old machine shop. But you may like it.
also anybody have a method of krinkle painting old metal cabinets or toolboxes do tell.
Tagging @d42jeep again. He has done several boxes that have come out pretty good.

PL: I’ll post another picture (or two or three) of my old cabinet soon but I think it’s a Hamilton so maybe from an old print shop.

Thanks for the detailed information and looking forward to seeing what Jeep posts or maybe finding a few of his posts with those wrinkle finishes you mentioned.

Esben: nice finds and best of luck getting the locksmith with the knowhow, skills and the right keys to work your cabinets. just curious since you live in Shefield any chance you are near the old Record vice factory? years ago a member on your side of the pond posted up some sad pics of the old factory with some very interesting graffic paintings (murals or graffiti) on some of the old walls. feel free to post up a few pics here or on the big vise thread if you happen to get any.

Seems Record moved a couple of times in their history. I remember going into the Parkway factory when it was still living and breathing, late 70's. They made woodworking planes and Stillsons ( I have some).
We have a fantastic history in steel, heavy engineering, tool manufacturing and of course cutlery. But that's all it is now, history. Saddens me.
You may have seen these websites

Also Sheffield forum has posts from locals who were working in these industries.

Those are a nice set up with all that drawer space. Is that a vault door frame in the background? The frame on it looks huge whatever it is!

If I built another house I would probably build some sort of security room in the basement.
I think the coolest thing with this door is the day gate.
Schwab actually still sell this door, the day gate on the new one is clear plexiglass.

Further on with my Roneo Air Ministry cabinet #3,287.
Tinkering with it today making a temporary frame to get it off the floor and move it when needs be, upended it, Shelf clanged and fell out
bringing with it a key that fits the locks

DSC04513.JPG DSC04512.JPGDSC04515.JPG

Square nuts and just happened to find a Gordon 5/16"BS double sq socket. Result!
Will get hold of some more suitable (bigger) castors at some point, and some section and scrounge something to weld with.

Eaben: that’s one way to get a key for an old cabinet. Nice find!!

Elmer: so is that vault door functioning as your man door into your shop/garage or just a very cool wall decoration?

Strange it appeared as it did. Had the shelf out before to clean some detritus. Key, old Yale, was wrapped in some cotton thread and must have been jammed in a joint.
An elderly lady was walking up my drive just as I was, erm, celebrating. She stopped dead stared for a second then turned and left.
Seems reasonable to me.

Left this behind at the flea this morning. I liked it. Industrial look. Hanging drawer slides. Two pieces. And the top tilted up. But I didn't like it enough for the asking price.

PL: those old flat file cabinets are great storage hence all the written tool names on them. It definitely needed some tlc and some sellers thinks that a vintage look which I disagree. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and here’s to a good winter of chasing down old stuff without the toys and baby clothes in the mix!!

That's pretty cool. Is the price likely to drop?

Not as far as I want. He wants $100 and he is notoriously firm. See those trailers in the back? Full of stuff. He doesn't even haul it away. Just locks it back up. Has some kind of arrangement. The other liquidators would probably take $40 just to get rid of it.

At $100, I'd be on that like a rooster on a June Bug.

I was thinking the same, @PugetDude. Maybe offer $75 just to see if I could get it for $90 (because I hate paying asking price for anything used, just out of a weird principle)...

Make him an offer the can’t refuse. J/k

Our local flea market specializes in drug paraphernalia, glass pipes, bongs, bowls, incense, puppies, HF tools priced more than new and 8 tracks and cassettes.

Good luck. Cool old chest.

Weird?! It's a flea market! In NJ! Haggling is de rigeur. It's the expectation. It's part of the culture. It's in everyone's DNA. The only time it's not expected here is the $1 table. It's an art and a science, but there is an unwritten decorum, even among shabby gentlemen. I won't talk someone down to $3 from $5, and $50, which is as high as I would go for that chest, is too far apart from asking to not be a lowball. It's too bad it was this guy, who's always high. If it was any of the other liquidators, they wouldn't be asking an estate sale price. They are bulk guys. Bulk buyers, not per buyers. He doesn't have any chest price invested in that chest. He'd be $50 ahead.

But hey, that's why prices, and value, and what people are or are not willing to pay, is always relative, regionally, and situationally.

Phoenix never was the manufacturing heartland so we don't see the industrial surplus you guys are tripping over in the East and Upper Midwest.
Dang, you can say that again.
I’m really glad I was working in ‘da hood in Detroit when I was just starting to equip my shop.

There were some awesome garage and especially estate sales back there as well.

Don't get me wrong, I know people who won't pay full price at a RETAIL store (they just have to haggle everywhere). That annoys me, only because it's NOT in my DNA. I've really only haggle with CL, because I figure it's expected there.

When people over-price and insist they're firm, I don't waste my time. The only result will be two frustrated people, and an unsold item.

The exception being if it’s been listed for a long time. In that case I will start with ’”I know you said the price was firm, and I don’t want to get lumped in with the low ballers, but it has been listed for a long time”. Sometimes I’ll point out that these particular items normally sell pretty fast.

It’s worked a few times.
