That might seem funny, but considering all but one side of the box was damaged, and the USPS put TWO stickers on it like this...

20240122_224016.jpg

...I was VERY glad the seller did such a thorough packaging job, including several wraps of bubble wrap (with tape), then a couple of layers of cardboard (and more tape), then more bubble wrap!

...all to protect this!!!

I was really after just the swivel base, which is good, because this poor thing has seen better days overall.

But, the base will serve as a replacement for the one that was missing on a vise I inherited when my grandfather passed away in 2020.

I've been casually looking for one of these for the past 4 years. Found this one on eBay for a fraction of the price of most I've seen, and it included free shipping. Came all the way from Washington (state), in cloaked mode (I basically gave up on the tracking, as it never updated until it was crammed into the mailbox).

Mine has obviously seen some abuse (saw and drill marks on the cast parts of the jaws), but it doesn't look like it's been hammered on. The donor looks like it fell off a train wreck!

None of us knows anything about this vise, unfortunately. I found it in a box under my grandfather's workbench after he passed. Knowing him, he got it from work years ago (he had lots of stuff like that). It's also possible that it came from my great-grandfather.

Either way, I like the look of the vise, and it has a cool (if unknown) family connection, so it was worth the $37 (shipped) for the swivel and a whole vise worth of spare parts!

Oh, and while these two are clearly newer, Simplex originated in RI (like me, my parents and grandparents)...

Fixed it Roger.

White stuff? That's just a couple of inches of nuisance snow we got last week, which changed to freezing rain before the temps took a nosedive, now it's basically solid ice.

We got this 8-to-10-inch storm the week before, but it melted within a few days.

Weird weather around here the past few winters.

Where I am in Wisconsin, we've been well above average (and normal) temperatures and below normal snowfall this year. And our son in Pueblo Colorado has had near record low temps and more snow than usual. And summers are getting weird too.

The blizzard of 78 in Mass was the best winter of my life. Bumper skiing, sledding, tunnels in the snow drifts, snow forts, 20 person snow ball wars. I could go on and on.lol

I found some old classics today. The tin will sit with the old saws. And the Miller Falls offset screwdriver may be put to work. Every year, come fall, I go down to my neighbors and clean out his orifices in his natural gas heaters. I have a ratchet screwdriver that works, but maybe this will help a little better.

I was in RI for that. No snowblowers, so Dad had to hand-shovel that mess (I was 8, so no help). The state of RI (and most cities within) were completely unprepared to deal with that snow. Most roads, including the interstates, were untouched for days or longer.

We saw the National Guard out trying to help, with loaders, supply trucks and even helicopters.

We also saw a few snowmobiles zipping around.

As for us, we trudged to the grocery store with a toboggan to carry the food home. My sister was only 6, don't ask me why Mom and my sister didn't just stay home for that!

It was fun to make a fort out of a big pile of snow.

The best winter for my boys was 2015. After multiple 6-20+ inch storms in a row, we had something like 4 feet of snow on the ground (at my current house in MA). With my snowblower, I'd made paths around the house, and out to the wood piles. That was basically a 3D maze for the boys (and over their heads), and they spent hours out there running around with Tonka trucks, etc. Endless sledding as well.

Plowing driveway, Boston, 2015

I remember the winter of 2015. That was just the first big storm--dropped 36" in my driveway. Let's see if the video plays for you all. I got stuck after the first pass, and those snow humps are buried cars in the driveway.

WOW, that *****! Makes me feel (slightly) better about the few times I've struggled with the tractor-mount and walk-behind blowers.

The Blizzard of '78. You mean the time the Governor of the Commonwealth ordered all the schools closed on a bright sunny day despite every road in Western Mass having been cleared the day before? We were waiting for the school bus for an hour wondering why it hadn't come, until somebody came by and said there was no school. That was nice. Then Weld? Cellucci? did it again in the late 90s, and ordered everything closed statewide. The mayor of Pittsfield was asked on the radio about the blizzard that had "shut down the Entire State", and said "We finished cleaning all the roads last night. Brodie is open. I'm going skiing." I was living near Greenfield at the time. We had gotten 20-30 inches, but everything was clear. Good advice that mayor. Blue Sky Day.

Was that 1996? Incapacitated SE PA for days. Lack of functioning snow-removal equipment and funding for overtime held Allentown snowbound. Emergency services couldn’t get around. My neighbor and I joked about the opportunity for unchecked larceny, but stayed home with our wives. Subsequent birthspike around October, including LesserDottir2.

I remember a blizzard back then too. Had to be 96. We were home from school on a sunny day playing down on the corner atop the plowed pile that was up to the second story of the house. Biggest piles we ever had were that year. Made for some great King Of The Mountain.

Small estate sale yesterday, got $150 worth of welding tanks, a Victor torch set, couple craftsman tool sets in cases, bunch of Pyrex for the wife, dozen sterling silver candlesticks and salt shakers, a spectroscope, some books and this for $3: (It's been sitting in electrolysis overnight, has several layers of green and blue paint over the original red.) Couple more days and I'll be able to see what it is and if it's worth restoring.

Still in the January doldrums here in S.A. It's been so long since I went to a decent sale, I went against my better judgment and drove an hour out to a Kerrville sale run by The Golden Girls. It's pure slander on my part, but I believe they got their name from pricing everything as if it were made of Gold. As for tools, and garage items in general, they are also one of those companies that appear to grab handfuls of mismatched and barely related items, toss them in a baggie and slap an anally-extracted ebay price on it.
I resolve (once again...) to refrain from attending their sales.:monkey_pi

On a happier note, my nephew just bought his first house north of Dallas, and as a house warming gift, I sent him this S-K Wayne #4521 Socket Set from early Dresser era (’68-’69?) that I found several years ago and fleshed out with the missing pieces--plus a couple more. Of course, I failed miserably to take a picture of it before I packed it up. He has no tools so he was very happy to receive them.

I texted him this picture and said if he would ever come down to S.A. for a visit, he might leave with a tool chest and some other choice items. I'm not holding my breath.

OK, so I’ve been posting some resale finds on the new tools thread, but I’ve now discovered this one.

Part 1:
Stopped by an Estate Sale around the corner and got the Stack On 3 drawer cabinet (needs a lot of work!) and everything on it for the princely sum of $10!! Some hard-handle Craftsman screwdrivers that look suspiciously like SO(?), some Stanley USA screwdrivers, a Matco wire stripper, a Crescent Crestolloy wrench, some small SO wrenches, and miscellaneous sockets that are too rusty to tell.

Part 2:
Stopped by a second sale and picked up a bunch of stuff for $1/piece. Proto, GearWrench, and Matco ratcheting wrenches, assorted Craftsman wrenches, and a Crescent and Craftsman hex driver.

One sale yesterday was a quick 5 minute drive from the jobsite and then another sale on the way home netted these few items.
Craftsman 50 ft tape measure
Craftsman Circle H Socket with BE sliding Tee
Craftsman locking pliers
Craftsman 1/2" ratchet
Starrett Protractor
Ace aluminum funnels
Hinsdale ratchet
And the leather binder the tools are sitting on in some photos.

Those sockets look like a set I have that came with my craftsman labeled battery powered hex bit driver. Good for the tool it came with, or a manual powered hex bit driver. I forget if they have a name

Does this looks like those small snap-on toolboxes that seems to be desirable?
I think so. Too much paint to see if it's stamped with # and info; it is an earlier non-embossed logo one if it is. Interior partitions slightly different than usual. After I get the paint off, I'll be able to tell more. It works correctly and not all beat up and bent, so would restore easily if no other damage emerges from under the paint. Was being used as an art materials box, and was multi coat sprayed with the **** paint you get at hobby/decorating stores.

I suspect you’re correct. I have them soaking and spent a bit of time cleaning up the 3/8 hex driver. These were in a little zippered pouch covered in years of dust!!

Welcome!

You ****!

SC, there are some nice pieces in there. Welcome to the garage sale thread!

Seconded!

Thanks!! I'm always on the lookout for well-made tools. I don’t hit as many sales as I used to, but it’s always fun to find them and bring them back to their original glory. Being from Western NY, I’m partial to Crescent Tool and its predecessor and successor companies.

I’d appreciate any information on the Craftsman screwdrivers. I have a lot of Craftsman screwdrivers, but I haven’t seen these hard-handled versions. I found an old thread from 2012 that provided some good insights. Thanks.

The solid red handles were considered a budget line, pre 2000 I think. Not like the blue clear Phillips and red clear flat head screwdrivers, but a step down.
