Below 265 SQ/FT Not a garage...

So , I went from having a 753 ft2 space comprising of 4 rooms and a larger undercover work area in Johannesburg south africa to a double door closet in an apartment in NY.

I had a dedicated room for my laser cutter and related stuff.
A dedicated room for my power tools and air compressor, basically just a drill press , various electric saws , a table saw , a metal cutter , arc welder and the likes, then a room for electronic kinda of stuff with the outdoor area under a 6 car carport to do my arc welding etc.

I now have a double door closet and I'm trying to make this work but also don't have nearly what I had in SA but this is a progress pic on trying to make this closet functional.

We plan on buying a house and my shop space will change.
This is after day one and before 9ve added additional shelving. I've used the spaces between our kitchen cabinet and the ceiling to store my socket sets.

-Large properties are MUCH cheaper in Johannesburg than they are in Westchester as are tools.
I need a pay grade upgrade before I'm getting even a fraction of that space and tools I had there, here.
-That's why I moved, have so fewer tools and space.

So, kinda the universal reasons for lots of things: Love & money, one way or another.

If you can, go to the library and look at The Workshop book by Scott Landis. If I recall, it covers several really tiny shops, including at least one in a closet. Might give you ideas.

Fair warning: there will be other shops in there that will make you drool. Try to keep it off the pages of the library book...

Ah.... Whenever someone asked me why I left a house on 6 acres with a 26x40 detached shop in Eastern Washington for a house in the Phoenix suburbs when I moved in 2001 I always replied with "It's a long story. There's a woman involved..."

It's an organizational nightmare right now but I've fitted an accordion door and busy understare lights that I don't have an RGB controller for and seeing how that'll work, if it's enough and if I can defuse it a little more which shouldn't be an issue.
I'll organize better once I use the space as I've done so before hand and when comes to using the space one changes it. I'm using some of my wrech hooks to hold other tools and I've fitted a shelf to use as a bench but it has so much **** on it but I've used the wood vice a couple of times. I'm going to bolt both the wood working vice and 4 inch swivel vice into the bench but also have a thick plank I can bolt them too when I need to use them outside and maybe make up a small steel bench outside that can double up as a bench to be used for our BBQ area.
The accordion door is as far on the frame as possible allowing me to have a power strip on the frame which is practical and easily accessible. I'll run the wire the outlet inside the closet at the bottom.

Please excuse the mess but this is the little I've done so far.

Some organisation is sort of happening.
I hate that my bench powers supply jas to sit sideways like that but I have to little bench space I have to stack.
Along tge wall I have my no skips metric 4 -32mm and SAE behind the metric wrenches up until 1-5/16
And old craftsman drill overhead for minor drilling applications that will run off the bench suplly. To the left are my Pliers. Cutters and wire strippers along with solder wire and 3 different color rolls of wire along with my 2nd hands for when I solder.
Underneath that I have placed my step up transformer which gives me 110v and 220v outputs. Still so much to do.
Unfortunately, being a closet that closes, stuff ends up dumped in there so this is turning out to be quite hard creating a space to work in when space is already so limited. At the moment I'm worming on trying to organize it so it's functional soon hopefully

In my kitchen. Ive installed this piece of wood on 2 tiny hinges as a make shift door where I store my socket sets and other wrenches that are in a roll pouch bewteen tge cabinet and ceiling. We plan on moving sooner rather than later so don't want to do something too permanent there. I'll stain tge wood so it matches though and then simply unscrew the hinges when time comes to sell and move.
