We don't, for sure. They advertised them, as the "JOIC", starting in 1943, through 1947, the language of the ads implies they are the mfgr, trade mags imply they are the mfgr, and the grandson told an anecdote in the JO thread that confirmed they made them. I'm convinced they made them. I am not convinced they also made them for Proto, though, which offered them as the "Any-Angle" in 1955 and 1956. It's possible. I just haven't seen any evidence. More on the JO thread here..

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum...e-torque-wrenches.413693/page-4#post-10543190

We should probably move the discussion there and/or Proto thread.

FWIW, I believe the crossbar is a Snap-on. It exactly matches (in size and finish) one I have with a WWII-era 9/32" drive breaker bar.
Hey Bill,
Cliff sent me a mixed box of cosmoline covered 9/32” drive Snap-on and Plomb WF breaker bars with crossbars. I did a close examination of the crossbars for both brands and was unable to tell them apart. Of course, none of them were marked. 😳 They fit the wartime 1/4” drive Snap-on breakers as well IMG_9160.png

Meager haul from the ReStore today. Three screwdrivers ready for the Evapo-Rust dip. A Millers Falls and two unknowns. The orange handle is marked USA and the yellow one is noted ‘Tool Steel’ on the shaft. Total investment - $2.

Very small haul (Lugz 2024_05) from the flea this morning.

2024_05A.jpg

If you're having a deja vu right now, some of you may recall that I found a similar wartime Navy manual in my seventh haul of the year last year (Lugz 2023_07), ironically, also in February, linked here. That was the 1944 edition. This one is quite a bit different, with a few different and additional illustrations.

The pin spanner is a FoMoCo with a nice deep script FoMoCo logo. Some of you may recall I found a few FoMoCo tools in an old toolbox with some K.R. Wilson tools last October (Lugz 2023_32), linked here, with close-ups in the K.R. Wilson thread. Those were the first FoMoCo marked tools I have ever found in the wild, so I guess I have a little unintentional collection going now.

2024_05B.jpg

The tappet wrench is a Herbrand. I found a whole set of these late 1930's models in a leatherette pouch many years ago, but I have a few extras, and I always pick them up just in case anyone else needs one to complete a set or to complete a second or third pouch-less set, whichever comes first.
It’s not the size of the haul that counts but the subject matter and quality. That navy book and ford special tool are so cool! I would have bought them as well
Found some Craftsman Professionals from one Seller then four more Industrials from another

Nice find on these desirable wrenches!

Given that those SK-made raised panel professionals were only available for two years, and may have only been actually made for 1 to 1 1/2 years, you prettymuch ****.

Pick this cabinet up for 40.00
Nice! You ****!

My little haul:
J.H. Williams S-50 & Snap-on XI-1618 (date coded 1954). $8.

As is frequently the case with old ratchets at these sales, the S-50 was a little rough turning and I generally point that out to the agents and use it to my benefit to get a lower price. I then go home, open up the ratchet, clean and lube the internals, and all is well. So that scenario played out today until I opened it up. I have never seen this kind of tooth wear. Six of the 16 teeth have their centers worn flat. Feb 10 24a.jpgFeb 10 24b.jpg

Anyone know of a repair kit source?

I hit a few sales today with my wife. She struck out but I found enough good stuff to scratch the itch!

- older pre emission gas can made by Gott. How many people remember these? I remember it from my childhood as mowing the lawn was one of my responsibilities. My newer **** emissions can is breaking down and this one is probably made of the good stuff!

- I also bought 2 carry boxes with junk inside to put out at sales. I pulled all the good stuff out! Including snap on vacuum grip pliers, snappy and Mac drivers, plomb stubby pebble dbe .

I’m about $30 into everything but will recoup my money at the sale.
IMG_9052.jpegIMG_9054.jpegIMG_9055.jpegIMG_9056.jpeg

- set of vintage wheel knockers in a cool Brazil tools box for $3. Includes an early p&c and plomb

- long c logo drill attachment

- cool blo can

Two sales looked worthwhile and were both in the Castro Valley/Hayward area. We showed up on time at the Castro Valley sale and there was a long line so we headed to the Hayward sale. It was mostly all tools with a large free area. My wife gathered several free items. IMG_3077.jpegThere were plenty of interesting tools to pick through. Here is the whole haul.IMG_3079.jpeg
ChannellocksIMG_3105.jpeg
Like new Thorsen toolsIMG_3091.jpeg
Olive drab box I bought mostly for the handleIMG_3080.jpeg
K-D wiper arm pliersIMG_3104.jpeg
3/8” drive Williams ratchet toolIMG_3102.jpeg
Snap-On door handle toolIMG_3083.jpeg

I wanted the dbi sala to resale if it was cheap enough. She told me $15, but couldn't break a $20. So she gave me the 3 jacks for $5. I have no use for a heavy duty fork lift jack, but I can use the other 2.

On Friday, I hit a couple sales on the way to the dog park. The first one was a digger sale, and I don't normally say this, as I love digger type sales seeing that you never know just what treasures are under the junk, but that place needed to be burned down. The single grossest house I have ever been in, and I used to be a handy man for a prop management company! Between the smells and the filth, I just turned around and left. The estate people didn't even blink at that, although I did see people leaving with things. I wouldn't be surprised if they found a body or five in that mess.

Anyway, the second was actually pretty good. A bunch of planes were in the pics, but they were gone by the time I got there. In any case, I did manage to find a few things:
53518964672_2ab5c2396e_c.jpg
Four MT2 bits (3 3/4" and a 47/64"), one MT1 bit in Mt1-MT2 adapter, Plomb pliers, Long C Cornwell and MAC sockets, Yankee push drill with all the bits, homemade screwdriver, Lufkin contour gauge set. $5 and after that I stopped at the Restore and found the Proto box and unmarked brace.

Today, I had a few stops planned, but the first pretty much took the wind out of my sales:

53520334797_0c75c76233_c.jpg
I haven't had a chance to do a complete inventory of the contents, but I did see: Stanley #3C, 5 , 8, 49, 70, 71, 151, Plomb linesman pliers, Starrett scraper, Bemis and Call wrench, Pexto draw knife, 2 other draw knives, Disston saws, and who knows what else. Most of it is pre-WWII and came from the sellers father, a cabinet maker. Dirty, surface rust, some of it is worth only parts, but there was no way I was going to pass it up. I should get a chance to go over it all tomorrow, and will probably start a thread over in vintage.

After that, not wanting to go home just yet, I made a couple more stops, and picked up the following:
53521281126_bf00cb4739_c.jpg
Stevens Spintite 5/16, Proto 12mm combo, and Snap-on 11/32 combo.

When we returned to the original sale the line was gone and there were still a few things to be found. Here is what we brought home. IMG_3082.jpeg
My favorite Stanley crimpers for electrical connectors and cutting off machine screwsIMG_3109.jpeg

CA Division of Highways tape measure by LufkinIMG_3110.jpeg
Nice unmarked wood handle screwdriver IMG_3107.jpeg
Proto DOE wrenchIMG_3106.jpeg

The "interesting" Utica pliers Don found yesterday are for gripping the lock nut on Cannon-type multiple contact electrical connectors.

Nice pick!

Hit a few yard sales today and the two that were actually listed were duds. However I stumbled across a TOO sale right by the house that coughed up a few things. Was happy to get out the door with this batch for $10.

On the upper half are Craftsman dividers, Union compass, and no-name calipers. New Britain 3/8" speed wrench, Stanley block plane for parts, and some weird little nut driver, then a Union rule, Starrett and wood/brass calipers. Bottom half is a no name plumb bob, an ignition (I think) wrench set that is unlabeled except one wrench that says "Eismann Remy Wagner", then there are some Plomb sockets and a Plomb keychain screwdriver (my first found in the wild!). Also a Williams 1/4" breaker, Duro/SK/Walden 1/4" sockets, and a couple 3/8" sockets that I think are either Duro/Indestro or possibly SK. Finally a Long C BE spinner.

Don I was definitely there before you, I passed on some of that stuff. I shouldn't have, but I was already thinking it was going to be astronomical - it wasn't!

I had a great day! even if it was only the Col FM and one Estate sale (the second estate sale - I told them they wanted the stuff more than I did. He gave me a price of $30, so I asked what was so valuable - he said $25 for the Vise (a small homeowners, exposed screw vise... icon_rolleyes.gif ) I said you want it more than I do" and set it down, and he says $10 for the rest icon_eek.gif "I guess you want it all more than I do!" (can't these people do simple math? 30-25 does not = 10 icon_e_confused.gif )

So that was last stop, and I went home.

Flea market was a bit slower than I would have hoped, but:

$2 1/2 Plvmb DBE (11XX part No. says its a DBE) Indestro auto wrench, T inside a star stamped wrenches - Made in USA so a tiny tool curio + 1 similar unknown;

O1-Plvmb-Indestro-Tstar-Unknown.jpg

$14 Taylor Mercury Thermometer, Greene Tweed & Co, Rawhide hammer (pretty sure I have the rawhide pucks), and a General magnetic clamp, plus a race car off a trophy;

O2-Tayor-Therm-Gen-ma-clamp-Greene-Twed-Co-Car.jpg

The big win from the same seller was a lantern box:

O3-L-box1.jpg

"Whats in the Box..."

O3-L-box2.jpg

Common Green but not too common - complete, original globe, and the vent would be near perfect except for one edge section - 220E date stamped 4-55 - the controls all work, it pumps pressure, and the cap does not leak. Completely empty, but a hint of CF for odor - I bet with some fuel it would light right up! as found & unboxed Got it for $15:

O3-L-220-E.jpg

O3-L-220-E-vent.jpg

O3-L-220-E-vent2.jpg

And some items from a guy selling everything for a buck each $4 - 3 Brass chain "Hangers", Redwood steak knife block, Wood Spool cutoff;

O4-Brass-chain-Knife-block-Wood-Spool-part.jpg

Last FM finds was some cheap Super Glue $1 - :

O5-s-glue.jpg

And at the good estate sale - 3 SO, 1 Vaco long drivers 16" Proto punch, and a 24" MAC 3/8 extension

E1-SO-Proto-Mac-Vaco.jpg

Old Craftsman 1/2" ratchet, Craftsman & P&C tappet DOE wrenches, a mini ladies foot, big Proto 1-1/8, Odd Ford SOE wrench I've never seen, A hatchet handle, and a big "S" wrench.

E2-Long-C-CM-P-C-L-ft-ford-Hat-haft-S-wrnch.jpg

E3-CL-Vaco-Krauter-Billings-Sp-1879.jpg

50 cal Ammo box 2 SO Pullers NOS?

E6-bx-Ammo-bx.jpg

E6-SO-pullers-X2.jpg

Focal Binoculars Made in Japan for Kmart -Despite the seller's rep, these are really nice, very clear binox at 50 X 12, and they bridge the gap between 6 or 7X binox and a spotting scope nicely! Very wide field of view also - 314 ft at 1000 yds.

The chemicals below were Free - but the value of just the first pic almost covers the whole buy! and all the chemicals is way more than what I paid! icon_mrgreen.gif - All are full or near full!

I would've bought that just for the pouch.
T inside a star stamped wrenches
Recheck those, Outlaw, almost certainly K inside a star inside a circle, sometimes called K-Star. They are made by Kastar. I have a set or two and several orphans.

^^Another **** for free chemicals!!!

These days, with real Freon, real Meth-Chlor stripper, cutting fluid with Tric, and (in blue regions) real Perc Brakleen being liquid gold, among other examples, I'm gravitating to cans and bottles at sales, before the tools.

I'd be stoked over the Tri-Flow. If you've never used Tri-Flow, it is the best ever for Aluminum-on-Aluminum friction.
It's not that expensive, but can be hard to find in brick&mortars (with the weird exception of bicycle shops, where it has a following).

@Outlawmws if you don’t mind me asking, what college flea market was this? A family member just moved to Hayward so I’ll be around there more often now.

This sale had a lot of cool stuff but most of it was too rusty for me. For $15 I got this long c Craftsman wall organizer and a Whitney no. 5 punch set with dies. I’ve wanted one of these but could never find a good deal til now.

IMG_9056.jpeg

Not sure what the Craftsman piece was meant for but I think it’s a killer shade of blue.

Very nice finds! The plomb pliers are not common to find. Also speaking of not common, I'm trying to fill out a Proto MFD era metric tools board. If that 12mm combo is up for trades/grabs/purchase, I would be very excited.
Cool box! (Wonder what was in it!) And there are only two Plomb wheel knockoffs on the Plomb thread, mine and 3bay's.
Thanks. I'm not sure what was in the brazil tools box but it's the right size for a 1/4 set but it doesnt have any dividers? I'm sure the sk experts will chime in on it hopefully?

Here is my haul for the weekend. Work had me in the PNW, and my flight was late today, then later, so I took some time to kick around near @Smokeshow69 territory. Nothing really jumped out at me from CL ads , but hit a few in West Linn. First was a train wreck for me, daughter trying to sell moms estate, sold one box of tools, but was trying to get $100 for a second “military chest” box of mismatched type tools. Couple of us wanted to part out a few things, but at a few minutes to noon, half off time, she was not interested, and we put them back and left. I was after a painted grey JOIC consumer drill, with bits in the handle, the other guy a couple of bow saws.

Next sale, 15 mins away, but only about 2 miles, was professionally run, and I grabbed a Huot fractional drill stand. And a roll of gardening wire for a buck each. Other tools, but most too big for me.

First grab of the day was the Handy Andy divided box with sliding latch, for Sexauer plumbing parts, from an antique mall in Hillsboro, one of only two that opened early enough for me. As I had also grabbed several pounds of local coffee, some local cider, and dog treats, I was right near my weight and volume limit for the flight home.🫤

I'm not sure what was in the brazil tools box but it's the right size for a 1/4 set but it doesnt have any dividers?
I’d think the three pullers in the middle are original. The match up with S-K.
I agree with 3bay. Set of 5 and PO lost or broke the other two, replaced with P&C and Plomb. Really cool find. I don't remember ever seeing any Brazil tools on SK thread other than drive tools.

Don- nice finds. That valve socket, maybe New Britain?

Outlaw- nice Snap On puller find!

Old Radar- I’ve seen some good ratchet devastation before, but not to a Wiliams plug rat. :wtf:

Saukit- that long C spinner can’t be too common.
