Not sure where to post this, but can you use WD40 as cutting oil?

I have used it drilling steel. I can't say it made any noticeable difference.

I use it working in the field doing home repairs when cutting metal like pipe and what not with the sawzall. I think you could do a lot better at the home shop.

I had to drill out a snapped off bolt from a PTO shaft in the field. I used PB-50 (don't use WD-40 at all any more) for cutting oil and it worked just fine.

What's more important, are using the proper feeds and speeds. Cutting oil will be more helpful than WD, you can pick some up for a couple bucks a can.

I was 60 miles from civilization. Money for cutting oil wasn't an issue, 2 hours to drive there and back was. I had a drill, 2 cans of PB-50 and a snapped off bolt. WD-40 will work just fine as a cutting oil. In a pinch, a fit of laziness or any other reason you might have.

I was searching around and discovered that some things are best to cut dry, like cast iron and brass. That true?

That's correct.

I like WD-40 for Aluminum and high sulfur thread cutting oil for steel.

yes, but what about for drilling holes in stuff?:lol_hitti

Yep it will do. Vegetable oil and household mineral oil also has saved expensive drill bits from overheating as they keep the drill bit cool. With the vegetable oil it might smell like you are cooking up some lunch!!

No one ever gave a bunch of hypothetical situations, they simply asked...

Maybe the better question is, is cutting fluid lube?

If WD40 is not a good lube, then it probably shouldn't be used for cutting oil.
