JD ***** big time!

Lots of great stuff; but the wet grinder prompts Q's from me - what size is the wheel? Asking as I have a Sears wet grinder (very different design) and I use it a ton for wood chisels I get that have been abused:
Wheel is roughly 2-3 inches wide. Probably 3 inches in diameter.

Monday I stopped by second hand store in my home town. It is only open on Mondays and Saturdays, and often not on Saturday. I found some items I liked, and for a business price, $15.00 was reasonable for these items.

Plomb Pebble 1240 combo 1-1/4
Plomb Pebble 1232 combo 1"

Friday I attended the swap meet bmw reported earlier. I was not spending much money until I ran across an item I couldn't resist:

Atlas 6300 Steady Rest 1.jpg
Years ago I bought an Atlas 6300 (Clausing) 12" lathe, but it didn't have a steady rest. This is something you must have to really use the lathe very much. There is one currently for sale on Ebay for $650.00, so they don't come cheap. I managed to get this one for $150.00, which was quite reasonable. Neither the seller or I was absolutely certain it was the right one for the lathe, but it turned out to exactly match the image in the 1953 sales brochure, and fits the lathe perfectly.

As bmw pointed out, there was a lot of stuff priced at $1.00.
Branch 15 1.jpg
Blue Point BP 4 4 oz. ball pein hammer
Snap On (Vacuum Grip) #86 side cutters
Parallel jaw pliers marked "ARMEE FRANCAISE 44P 1992 008"
Armstrong 28-044 SOE wrench 1-3/8
Herbrand H-3 DOE Tappet "Vanadium" 5/8 x 11/16
New Britain NDF 550 DOE tubing wrench 3/8 x 7/16
Lectrolite 6000 "Ford Brakes" DBE 8-point 7/16 x 1/2
Walden 1850 double swivel box socket
D.G.M. "Chrome Vanadium" pliers. Crimper? end nipper?

There were plenty of $0.25 priced items, too:
Branch 15 2.jpg
Sockets:
Hinsdale 1/2 dr. 4-pt. 3/4
??? 1/2 dr. 11/32 12-pt. cadmium plated, straight knurl
Walden 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 3/4
Wards Master Quality 1/4 dr. 6-pt. 3/16
Powr Kraft 84W4865 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 1/2
Powr Kraft "100" D84-4789 1/2 dr. 12-pt. deep 5/8
Williams Superrench 1167 combo 7/8
Bonney PWA1397 3/8 hinge handle
P&C 6205 1/2 dr. extension 10"
Proto USA #000AA feeler gauge
Plomb USA 3318 Ignition DOE 9/32

Reasonably priced items included $5.00 for the Blackhawk 4219X wrench for Ford Model T main bearing bolts and wrist pin clamp bolts (9/16 sq. and 9/16 open end)

This ugly toolbox caught my eye because of the ratchet. Examination showed a Wizard 1/2 drive set with sockets from 7/16 to 1-1/16 (missing the 3/4 and 13/16, but I have a 3/4), ratchet and extension all supplied by Indestro.
20240622_123717.jpg
Other goodies in there include SK and Craftsman -V- sockets, a Vlchek punch, Thorsen 1/4 drive spinner with 11/32 socket, and a Plomb USA 5476 1/2 dr. 12-pt. swivel socket 9/16. The box is missing screws to hold up the tray, so it isn't quite as bad off as it looks. I paid $15.00 for it.

Another deal was this hammered Kennedy box for $5.00. I hope to salvage the drawer pulls from it. It also has 14 good drawer slides and 14 retaining clips. Under the bottom drawer, which was jammed, was a Craftsman set of metric Allen wrenches.
Branch 15 6.jpg
Branch 15 5.jpg
The best part of the day was getting to see many people I knew, including Oregon Rock Crusher and his wonderful wife. I saw a pair of brothers that I hadn't seen in almost 50 years! Nice folks at this meet, and I spend a lot more time visiting than shopping.

I'm impressed with @bmwrd0 Stanley 113 with the handle and the uncommon knob, the nifty World's Fair globe that @3baygarage found, and @Provincial 's steady rest for his lathe. I've been looking for a steady rest for my more common lathe for years and haven't found a good affordable one. These three **** for finding the kinds of things that I would have brought home, too.

Just got back from an all tool garage/estate sale. Not advertised well in a very small out-of-the-way town.

Lots of stuff left for a Sunday, and they wanted to sell. I am thinking about going back around 1 to see how low they will go on what’s left.

Walked out spending $20 total. I threw the number out, but I’m guessing they probably would have taken less.

Irwin tap/die set. I got to the car, realized it was missing the 1/2” tap and went back to scrounge through the others for one. They just let me have it, got back to the car again and realized it was 1/2-20 and not 1/2-13 🤦🏻‍♂️. My fault so I don’t go back a third time.

IMG_5790.jpeg

Barcalo Buffalo 3/4 wrench and a Weil Adjustomatic.
IMG_5791.jpeg

Gear Wrench 3/8 7/16 9/16 and 5/8 ratchet flex heads. Couldnt find the 1/2” (I am noticing a trend…)
Channellock 420’s
A no name Ball Peen
And an old set of True Value snips
IMG_5792.jpeg

There were tons of USA made hardware store and Craftsman hand tools, I was cherry picking.
Also had plenty of tool boxes and stationary home shop tools. Bench drill press, vertical and horizontal band saws, various sanders, compressor.
If someone was looking to get a garage shop going they would have been pretty well set up with decent tools pretty cheap.

I will report back if head out there again this afternoon.

Oh….and there were 6 Ford 8N tractors for sale. They are too big to fit through my gate or else I would have been tempted.

Minimal yesterday and nothing in sight here today...
This is me also. Two closest were repeats from a couple of weekends back, bought a squid extension cord with a pair of USB ports. Highlight was a sale with a Hi Lift jack for $20, and watching a couple looking older than me trying to figure out how it worked. He was clueless, she was deciphering the mechanism for him. I went over and stood by the seller, watching the show.

Me: there is a reason they are called a widow maker
Him: I only know it as a toe buster, I’ve kicked that damn thing so many times just working around it in my garage. Never used it, sold the Jeep.

A few minutes later the couple got it two clicks up. I had to run, couldn’t wait to see if they figured out down.

But, what kind of proud new (tool) dad are you, that there's no pic of that rest on your lathe already???

That's a cool find! Never seen one like that - and me with at least 69 pair of linemans...

- 1923 patent Eagle oiler

Another cool find!

- Wartime and GMTK-spec correct Brown & Sharpe No. 4 Tempered Steel Rule.

Curious - what make it qualify for Wartime/GMT? - Wondering if I have any (I keep tellign myself to dig therouh dn see how much of a GMT set I could make out of what I have)

and a Weil Adjustomatic

Intersting - Most of these found are Masterench by Heller Brothers. There is a thread for these, and I'm not sure we have seen a Weil? :dunno:

Just checked two posts - Lugs posted a "seen tese" psot for 3 marked Weil japan (post 47) and another one found in post 116

It's the right B&S logo, for starters. GMTK called for a 41-R-2290, and the manuals and Fed Specs for that call out "Tempered" and "No. 4," which is the designator for an English-scale rule with graduations in 8ths and 16ths on one side, and 32nds and 64ths, "for quick reading", on the flip side. Stiff, not flexible.
(I keep tellign myself to dig therouh dn see how much of a GMT set I could make out of what I have)
Well, if you ever get around to really meaning it, I can get you started with a folding, laminated, military inspection outlines inspired 'cheat sheet' that I designed and made for many, many years on G503. com dubbed Wingnutt's Whiz, after my username there. Wingnut was taken here, but when some people here on GJ showed interest, I made a batch re-dubbed Lugnutz's Learner! :) I think those are all gone, like the Whizzes, but I would be willing to gin a few more up at cost of materials and postage. (Not trying to pitch them. Trust me when I say those days are well behind me and they're kind of a PITA to make. Haha. But I would make some exceptions on a case-by-case basis.)

I finally made it out to a yardsale after almost a season and a half of not getting to go.

First yardsale I picked up the following:
4", 3",2",and 1" Brown and Sharpe Mics

Mitutoyo dial calipers

Starrett depth mic

Lisle disconnect tool set

Snap on 2 1/2" Crowsfoot

Mac window crank removal tool

And paid a whopping $23 for all of it.

The rest of the day I didnt really find much. I should've saved the gas.

*edit, the 2" mics are Lufkin brand

Nice score FF!

Count me in on the next batch or if you have a leftover. No need to do a one off, but if you get enough to make it worthwhile, I'm in.

Retirement is less than a year off now, so I'll have time to dig in on a lot of backlogged Want to do's...

I'm late to the pile-on, but anyone (besides us) aware of your assessment of your neighbor?
Snerk. My son..., in less crass terms. He was her mailman! (Not a reference to the twice-ringing kind!) Even though he's in the middle, and only 31, he is our Classic Rock and New Wave kid, and was thrilled to discover she was on his route. He's on a different route now. I behave around her. Pretty much. :)

This area seems to attract musicians. If you like country at all, you've probably heard of Luke Bryan. (Kind of a neat backstory, actually, as enlisted Navy.) Anyway, per my daughter, he just announced some kind of 100 Best Bars in America tour, and Barnacle Bill's, which is our hamburger joint, is on the list. Walking distance. He was spotted there unannounced a few months ago, so there must be some connection.

The “??? 1/2 dr. 11/32 12-pt. cadmium plated, straight knurl” socket is probably New Britain. Does it have “Made in USA” in three rows to the right of the size marking? The size formatted “11-32” rather than “11/32”.
You nailed it LS! The "Made in USA" marking was hidden by rust, and there is a dash in the size marking.

This is going to be long…
I went back to the sale I was at this morning. Still a ton left. This was definitely an estate type sale, and I’m not sure how the seller was related.

Another $20 got me:
The rest of the taps and dies
USA Stanley combo square + three other squares
oil can
two sets of pivoting jaw pliers (one set snap-lock)
a tiny ball peen I found out was a Plomb after I got home
some small USA Ace and Craftsman wrenches
a Duro 4436 ratchet.
IMG_5807.jpeg
IMG_5808.jpeg

I am holding this weird because there is a bunch of personal info engraved on it, including a SSN. I’m guessing someone had this with them in the service. The previous owner was in the service but the names don’t match. The town the sale was in does match the what’s on it though 🤷🏼‍♂️.
IMG_5810.jpeg

As I was paying I asked about a Craftsman top chest. $30 would take it. Still had some odds and ends in it. It was stuck to the mid box so he said take them both for $30.

IMG_5793.jpeg

Got home and went through what was still in it

These are the actual tools that were in it, then the consumables, and the random stuff.
IMG_5812.jpeg

IMG_5819.jpeg
IMG_5813.jpeg
IMG_5814.jpeg

Lots of cool stuff well worth $30.
The highlight was the Torque wrench.
IMG_5795.jpeg

There are a bunch of hacksaw and jigsaw blades, zip ties, and some hardware still in a few drawers

Here’s my small haul for the weekend. Nothing special but I have not seen a tool at a sale in weeks. All cookware and kids/baby stuff.

First was a grove tool works camp axe and some files and handles

Next was a new bottle of Norton sharpening oil, V series 1 1/8 - 1 1/16 doe, Bonney 15/16 - 7/8 dbe, small socket tray, crescent 8517 pliers, Vaughn and bushnell punch, 7/8 snap on 1/2” drive, 2 Armstrong crows feet, a rubber mallet, and about 80’ of 1/2” rope.

And finally a brand new Klein flex bit with guide handle (it had the Kelems grip but I dropped it along the way) and a 3/4 full jug of mineral spirits. $20 for everything.

Wow, Nice scores Flyer!

Yep, nice pickings. I have to ask what brand the crinked socket/torque adapter is.
Thanks guys, not often I find a good amount of truck brands at one stop usually drips and dribbles from cherry picking DIY's folks stuff.

This catalog might help you decipher the number, too small to read on my phone

Some may remember the Browning HiPower I picked up a couple weeks back. I was able to spend some time with it this weekend and field stripping revealed the (now) obvious, someone wanted the BHP to be a darker, glossier black so the 'wear' that I saw was the original bluing sticking through the ,{Birchwood Casey,AlumaBlack,Sharpie,Cold blue,I really don't know) but while wiping with oil-impregnated Hoppe's wipes the dark black was coming off. So I pushed a bit harder, changed cloths often and now I have it lubed, re-assembled and looking quite nice if I do say so myself.

Still basking in the afterglow of last month's warehouse sale--and the on-going cleanup--I had no intention of going to any sales this week. That resolution lasted until Friday, mid-morning, when I was casually perusing the ES.org site--you know, just in case...

The same company that ran the warehouse sale was in charge of this one and the pictures of tools were enough to make me jump in the car. I got there about an hour and a half after opening and they had had a brisk morning of sales. Most of the small socket sets were gone and the few that remained were empty or full of offshore tools.
I picked up the S-K Wayne 1/4" spinner I needed for last week's find along with the Papa Bear & Baby Bear (12" & 1") of Stanley's 100 Plus series of screwdrivers. I think the Indestro 889PK Ignition and Hobbyist set is unused, but missing the small screwdriver. The Starrett 93B tap handle, #473 thread gauge and #72 feeler gauge cleaned up nicely.
Next was an assortment of Snap-on 1/4" sockets and a 3/8" FV40A Spinner.
Finally, under a pile of stuff and completely hidden from view was the gray box with a Diamond <W> Williams socket set--including (for once!) the tommy bar! The M-110 spinner was found on another table. The sockets all have the wide band style of knurling.

I started making my way to the agent to get a price for everything when I went by a set of shelves that I had passed at least six times previously. This time I noted the edge of a slim reddish case that was covered with three or four cardboard boxes. I was at once happily surprised at my luck and slightly dismayed by the thought of yet another quest to complete a socket set--but there was no way I was leaving a Plomb box that big behind! I got another surprise when I hefted it off the bottom shelf--the thing weighed a ton!
Jun 21 24b.jpg
First three columns are marked with stars fore & aft of the size stamp, indicating manufacture by Indestro. Includes a 1/2" to 5/8" adapter.
Next column is Plomb, including a ground down drag link.
Next are three Duro and five Williams sockets.
A boat load of unmarked hex-drive sockets.
Two Blackhawks, two Snap-on, two Bonney, a Challenger and a shiny "Power Torque" from somewhere off shore.
The little sliding hex socket has no markings and the 1/2" square drive ell is a German Gedore.
The two things at the case corner are the hacksawed remains of a Williams 3/8 extension and a completely ground down 6pt socket.
Total on the day was $43.30.
