That gets me to wondering: Where the hell did I put my Pneumatic Pulstator? Gotta be around here somewheres....
While I'm sure a lot of you from dairy country already know, for the rest of you its what helps the milking machines feel like a calf is nursing the cow.

I'm going to call this post my "You didn't really think I was in charge, didja?" UPDATE on the Student Desk Restoration! :)

Mrs Lugz thought I was being overbearing on the OD. (I thought I was on pretty solid ground with it being the original color, but you know women, particularly wives, have their own logic system and I have found it best not to argue with it.) Not getting too personal, but when we have a bad row, the kind where you say things you don't mean, she still blames me for pushing Son #1 into West Point. (Never mind that HE is glad I did. HAHA.) So she is sensitive to anything that looks like I'm working on Grandson #1 now. (Never mind that he is 4! LOL) So I compromised on Antique Black (a chalkier appearance). I have to admit, I am very pleased with it. It looks terrific. Especially since I retained some of the deeper marks when I sanded. It looks authentic. I can't even imagine it being a bright color now, which would change the whole appearance. I did add his name on the front in some fancifully allusive script. And my wife's and my initials under the desktop. (I got some big time brownie points on that idea.) :pimpflash
I know I'm way late to the party and you already finished the desk...but my vote would have been the OD you originally proposed with his name stenciled across the front in white wartime font. Then on the sides of the desk you could have painted the flying tiger p40 shark face on it....but I get that would have taken a bit more time/effort that your schedule may have allowed. The black will go with a wider variety of things in the many environments the desk may be in for years to come. I'm sure he will like it and hopefully it passed muster with your wife and the daughter in law!

Pretty cool of you Lugz. When I was little I had one of these (internet photo) at home. It had the ink well, rounded metal edges, and this base. I can't remember if it came from a thrift store or what. I used it a lot when I was little and had fun storing things in it. Not sure what happened to it but I do remember a family friend wanting it for a planter. (n) If only I still had it for my daughter when she gets bigger.

Edit: it came to me green but not olive drab.

Pickups from last the past weekend. Couple of ladies having a garage/moving sale advertising woodworking tools, mechanic tools, man stuff, etc. Get there 20 minutes early and they say sure come on in. Go in the 2 car garage and I peruse some wood working and mechanics tools in the garage then I step through a doorway into a garage half-bay that looks like it was the workshop at one time. Spy some clear containers of tools so I ask if stuff is for sale in that room also? Ladies says just stuff in the garage proper but then says if you saw anything in the shop you might be interested in we can talk. Go in and she helps me look through the containers but she also says her son-in-law is supposed to come some time and go through the containers so I say no problem I don't want to get in between you and the SIL but she says don't worry about that they are mine to sell....okay then!

So picked up 3/8" flare nut crowfoot sets, S-K in metric and Snap-On in SAE. Snap-On 3/8 & 1/4 ratchets.

MAC hex socket set, mostly Snap-On SAE swivel sockets and a mix of MAC, Snap-On, Vulcan and Craftsman Hex and torx sockets.

Saturday morning heavy rain and windy but I say what the heck and still head out to a pro estate sale out in a rural area and get there about 45 minutes after opening. Photo's showed a whole lot of interesting man stuff, hit miss engines, shipping crates, tools, etc. Photo's didn't do it justice, stuff all over the place with tools in the out buildings. Not much in the way of complete sets of tools but a ton to look at even after arriving after the initial rush. The folks running the sale seem to often have sales with so much stuff that it is impossible to sort and price a lot of the small stuff, misc. tools, kitchen stuff, hardware, etc. so they make up boxes full of $2, $1, $0.50 per piece stuff so got to be ready to dig for any potential nuggets.

Anyhow, in the area of priced tools eyed and Old Forge punch set but when I actually looked at the punches a majority of them were practically unused MAC's. Two MAC screwdrivers.

And after digging through some $1 boxes came up with the Vulcan drivers, Snap-On pliers and MAC brake bleeder wrenches.

Took a detour this morning, en route to visit my parents, to walk through Leesport Farmers Market Wednesday Flea Market. Glad I did. $30 bought a load of rusty joy.

The ad for the last estate sale I went to was not at all promising. No pictures,a brief description of mens clothing (yeah, a thousand men's dress shirts), no mention of tools. I still went, and ended up with a great small parts cabinet for $5. I've struck out on many sales but I've also been pleasantly and shockingly surprised at what I've found at sales that were badly and inaccurately advertised. You just never know what you'll find. That's what make it fun.

Classic opportunity to broaden your horizons!
Into clothes shopping? :see:

:ROFLMAO:
I'm going to start collecting lidless Tupperware, broken toys and heavily used children's clothing!
From many of my past posts, I can see how you interpreted it that way, and rightly so--but in this instance I actually meant geographic horizons. Thirty miles to a advertised tool sale doesn't seem that onerous, especially if the alternative is to sit home and Jones about not having any tool sales in a more narrowly defined part of the world...

Well, I finally found some tools. Had two sales to go to this past weekend, and the first one was decent. There was stuff everywhere including lots and lots of tools. Most of the tools were in big totes; imagine a couple of hundred screwdrivers in a tote, next to a tote with 50 hammers ... and so on. Unfortunately many of the totes had been stored in a leaky location, and so the tools on the bottom had been sitting in water for who knows how long. But I found some good stuff, put together a pile, and when the seller said "How about twenty bucks?" I didn't argue. The next sale yielded 4 items out of the dollar bin - so the total for the day was $24. On the way home I hit five TOOs, but all they had was baby clothes, plastic garbage, and a few vastly overpriced tools.

I was particularly pleased to find the Snap-on ratcheting screwdriver and pry bar, and the Proto brass hammer, Other good stuff included Klein and Channellock pliers, a Stanley Hurwood awl, Mayhew punch, Thorsen screwdriver, Craftsman ball pein, and Buck Bros. paring chisel. Everything made in USA except for the welding clamp.

Some of it was a bit rusty, but it all cleaned up OK.

In hindsight I probably should've left this Klein circuit tester behind. Yes, there are four separate arc strikes. =8-O

Somedays its hard to define how far we will drive. If I am working I'll look ahead for estate sales that may be in my path. Yesterday (this whole week and last week) were not work days so I was a bit more flexible. The Craftsman 2 drawer box was 60 miles each way, BUT I was assured by the seller they would hold it while I drove ,instead of a lesson in frustration. Last week I drove 30 miles one way to pick up a bundle of tools I posted on Sunday. What I suspected from the pics was the trip was going to be financially benefitting for me due to the Craftsman set and the Hinsdale sets, and they were.

^^^ Yep. You never know unless you go.
I went to one this morning that I was vacillating about. Several pics of tools laid out and a CM stack. Decided since the fireworks don't start until tonight, I'd just go and see. They had an interesting assortment of tools, including a few Plomb pieces, but most were priced above my comfort level. I then spotted a couple of unpriced Ryobi 18V batteries and a charger. My sole surviving battery gives up the ghost after three (3) minutes and I've been looking for a good used system to replace my setup with. Anyway, I thought if they were cheap enough, I get them to tide me over until I found a replacement set. The garage attendant said $8 each, but with no way to ops check them, I countered with $3 each. He said I'd have to ask the boss. After a short discussion about pigs-in-a-poke, we settled on $5 for everything.
First one charged quickly and seems strong, so I think I'm ahead of the game. We'll see how long it lasts. Second is charging now.

Here is another auction find, a bunch of vintage hardware, two different lots. There was a bunch of newer **** I had the shipping company trash, as the shipping was 5x the cost of the two lots. I forgot the shipping company is not allowed to use flat rate boxes, so the shipping was about 3x what it should / could have been. Still a decent price for 30# of flat head slotted wood screws. May have to strip the zinc for certain projects.

There was a lot of that at the Corvallis, OR Restore a while back. I would usually pick up a box or two in sizes I could use, but I didn't see any last time I was at that location. Then again, I was on my way to an appointment, and didn't look too hard.

As far as distance to sales go, I give myself one tank of gas per week. I will go as far as that will take me, along with running my normal errands. But, if I see a great sale outside that radius, I will splurge. This is my hobby, and I will go to the mat over it. I haven't been to a movie theater more than once in the last decade, I am not much of a cloths or food person, so... buying trinkets that make me happy or can be sold for other things that make me happy is what I do in retirement.

We’ve really pulled in our horns as to how far we will drive since Covid. Our tourist town became THE destination 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, so it was hard to get motivated to go out, as getting back was soooo hard. We used to go across the bay, occasionally looting in @d42jeep & @Shiftless neighborhoods, but not much further. Now, Just over the hill, 12 plus miles, has been greatly Reduced, unless it’s something really **** with lots of pix of good tools or plants, or if we already have plans to be over the hill. Just too dang many people clogging the few roads into town. Today the tourons were backing up into the residential neighborhoods trying to avoid traffic on the main highway, blocking the box when the light turns green.

Stopped by an Estate/Too sale this morning. Lots of stuff, including a 5.0 Ford engine and a 65 Mustang Roller. Several toolboxes, including server Husky's, but also this Kennedy stack and a 41" Waterloo.

I spoke with the guy running the sale, he said it's his first tool sale so he's flexible on pricing. I talked him into $300 for a really nice (relatively speaking) 41" Husky stack.

Large 3/4” Snap-on Saltus wrench and Heller body hammer $4 at an estate sale this morning.
You ****

$15 out the door
He ***** for the Fiskars alone! everything else was free! I have their non extending gear drive 3X lopers (several - one in each camping rig..) and they are great!

I talked him into $300 for a really nice (relatively speaking) 41" Husky stack.

I'm confused -just the Husky, or the Kennedy stack too?

I extended again as nothing was showing close by for sales, and I got lucky, (one of two planned sales, today one simply didn't open (after saying "come early, beat the heat!")

I'm guessing early 1930's on the stove - A Prentiss-Wabers Preway Auto-cook-kit Instant lighting stove - Based on paperwork I think this one is a 308?

As found open (under a bench outside):

PW-1-as-found.jpg

No help on the tags:

PW-2a-tag-close.jpg

another angle on lighting:
PW-2aa-tag-close.jpg

PW-2b-tag-close.jpg

Maybe I can get something after getting the paint off the metal tag itself. I'll use SG soaked paper towel on just the tag...

But the tank is definitive:

PW-5a-tank.jpg

PW-5b-tank-lable.jpg

Getting to the tank was a surprise:

PW-4a-burner.jpg

And the burner uses an odd controller that rod hinges and moves a "piston" of some sort up and down, I'm guessing a plate valve opens and closes:

PW-4b-burner-2.jpg

But wait, there was paperwork in the stove! No way!

PW-4c-Lable-4.jpg

309 and 310 had cast iron grates and the same was true on the 409 series with 408 being wire grate, so this is why I think 308:

PW-4c-Lable-5.jpg

And I also picked an old toaster! I've been wanting to find a really old toaster for some time: I think this one is from the 20's, research continues:

Why would you be confused??

Even though it's a Husky, it has the older drawer configuration that you can't get anymore, and the taller bottom box. I just needed a box to keep supplies in at my secondary location, so I'll be selling the top box.

Also, there were misc tools in it...haven't looked to see what's in it yet, but the guy threw in this 3/4" set. No idea what it is, it's just older and made in Taiwan.

Maybe because you only posted pics of what you didn't buy, and mentioned a "husky Stack" (I saw a blue roller and (wrongly) assumed it was the husky, and not a stack...
Most GJ folks have see Husky stacks, and hate them, even the older one I purchased. I thought that the Waterloo and the Kennedy stuff would be more interesting.

Both were still available when they were shutting down for the day, if anyone wants to go snag them, thy can DM me and I'll give them the address.
