I dodged a bullet...

Roomies son (43yo) needed an oil change in his Audi. The first I hear about this was him dropping off a case of oil here... At this point I hadn't been asked of I'd do it... (Nope!)

He ended up taking it someplace to get it done (probably JiffyFools).

Today he's driving home from work to DTLA & the skid plate/aero doohickey came part way off, hit the road surface & folded back under the car.

Now he's sat at some truck stop off the freeway waiting on AAA.

Update:
He's at the TA Travel Center in Ontario Ca. He pulled in to call AAA. The fuckers in the store called the CHP & *reported him*. CHP show up & ask why he's parked there (Because the fuckers in the store couldn't do that??). Took a look at his car & told him to just drive it home with the part dragging. So if it comes off & causes an accident I guess that's on the CHP?

I won't be working on it.

The junkyard is off milikin in Ontario, not far from that TA.

No ones gonna question why he’s parked there lmao

In any case, good luck to him.

Gathering together the materials I need to create some motorcycle awards for the 'Vintage Motorcycle Category' for my HOA village's Car Show in September.

I don't like the modern plastic trophy tops, so I'll be combining some vintage metal trophy tops, winged eagles, medallions and name plates from the 1950-60's with new wood bases. I'll be staining or painting the wood bases accordingly. I'll post some pics once I finish them.

I tore into a 130hp Direct Injected 2 stroke Seadoo. Yep, that's 10 pounds of "stuff" in a 5 pound box!! Well, something has been dancing on top of that piston... Oh... it's just the c-clip that came out of the piston, LOL!! Cleaned up that nasty bilge too.

Wife's car through a check engine light this morning, so this afternoon I read the code.

P0456 "small evap leak". Great.

Also my truck has been making weird clicking noises and taking multiple tries to start. It's still under warranty and needs two recalls, so I'll schedule an appointment for it.
You'll learn to hate 'evap leak small'. If you're lucky it's just a gas cap. If you're not, you can spend at least a day hunting it.

Wife's jeep doesn't have a gas cap. There's a few easy options, but one thought is that it may have been caused because we filled the tank up and then left it in a hot garage for a week without driving it. If that's the case, it should clear on its own.

When you fill your car, do you stop at the first clunk, or do you really top it off?

Even though it doesn’t have a cap, there is a seal at the flapper. Ethanol crud/corn dust can cause it not to seal well. Clean it up and see what happens.

Wait how old are you and "roomie"?

I thought you were like 36.

Use the funnel that came with the car and spray WD40 or your fav lube around it while using the funnel to open and close the door in the capless fill neck.

I you decide to change the "leak detection pump" do yourself a favor and get from the mopar dealer not aftermarket.

I am assuming that you did not want to work on it cause it is an audi. Smart move. When I hear horror stories about oil changes, it frequently involves an audi.

True that! I have a couple of 2003 Malibus with the dreaded small evap leak, have not found the real problem even after much effort. Fortunately they will pass emissions without the evap monitor running, but the Check Engine light is annoying.

If anyone has ever found the real cause of this issue with 2000 vintage malibus, please share. I'm guessing it is some common issue, but after replacing the cap, filler tube, solenoids, hoses, etc. and smoke testing it, I have not been able to find it.

Have you checked the sending unit? Is it the plastic one? The plastic they used in that era sometimes turns porous or cracks over time. The smoke test won't show it. I've had to drop the tank, use Big Blu, or a similar HVAC leak tester fluid and super low pressure air.

They probably thought he was stopped for something drug related.

We stop at the first clunk. Always have.

I'll try cleaning the cap area this evening. Thanks for the ideas.

Have you checked the gas cap for tightness?

Laid out a sheet of 3/8" plywood to replace a spot in a basement area on the ceiling. It got primed with anti-mold/mildew stuff and will get a coat or two of paint next. Another sheet got the same treatment outside and then made its way in for the night. Now I need to rip down one sheet but my circular saw is undergoing surgery and is awaiting a trigger switch transplant. After that, it'll either be ripping or replacement. Or I'll get impatient and replacement will happen first.

If I work on his car it will just lead to endless "eversinces"
Rick, sounds like the guy who bought our house. Two weeks after the closing he called to tell me there were ants in the pool and when could I come over to get rid of them. I offered to do it in exchange for a down payment on a new car lease (not that I ever lease anything). That was 25 years ago and I haven't heard back.
