Beemer ***** so bad for that tote! Been hoping to run across one of those forever!

Hit a couple sales this afternoon no crazy deals but picked up a couple pieces I like.

First is this Snap on 3/8 set, dug it out of a pile of HF stuff at a pro estate sale. Unfortunately the guy recognized them, fortunately I had just helped him load a huge Lista into a guys truck so he didn’t gouge me as bad as he could have. $15

IMG_5927.jpeg

Next sale had a bunch of nice stuff but it was pricey and all individually marked. Filled a tool box with a few things and the guy added it up to $60 and then said he’d do $50, that was still too rich for my blood so I pulled a few loose socket sets out and we settled on $40

The box is an older SK with a pretty intact label. Not too much rust, one corner of the outside is roached but bottom is clean and inside is really nice. Looking forward to cleaning this one up!

IMG_5929.jpeg

IMG_5928.jpeg

The stuff inside…couple randoms, the little spinners are Craftsman, spinner is Snap on.
IMG_5930.jpeg

The socket sets…the offshore one I just bought for the little Cornwell rat which turns out to be 3/8”. Got the Craftsman set for the box and was pleasantly surprised

IMG_5931.jpeg

Looks pretty original, not sure if this came with a ratchet originally. Can’t believe the Tommy bar is still there!

IMG_5932.jpeg

Finally the pouches, two Proto sets and a Vim

Depends upon how much you wanted to spend. Was available in different versions. (catalog snip below)
Does that "HOLLYWOOD" wrench have any markings on the other side? Herald mark? Taiwan? Hong Kong? Japan?
(I'm curious as to whether or not it might be "Hollywood Accessories" (which I used to sell) but I do not ever recall any of their tools having the company name on them.)

I had about a half-dozen stops planned for today, Restores and thrift stores and the usual garage and estate sales, but I only ended up finding two things worth picking up.
53882540277_30a01b8ec7_b.jpg
About half way through the day, I found this, a leather tool satchel just like the one I used when I was doing inspections of commercial AC units. Strong as all get out, keeps everything right were you can see it, holds enough, but not too much, I could go on. These things aren't cheap though, and last time I looked Ideal had them for right around $300. I got it for $10.

But my first stop was where I found this:
53883824200_2de2af6082_b.jpg

53883826775_421fe9963a_b.jpg
A Montgomery Wards branded Logan 820(I think). It is missing the chuck (I have an extra anyway) the gear train from the headstock to the leadscrew, and the compound rest assembly, along with who knows what else. But, it has the legs, and the drip tray. And for $50 I think I am pretty far ahead. I will probably restore and then replace my South Bend 9b. So, not a bad day.
Not A bad day??? That’s it? Dude you killed it today! In between the leather tote and the lathe , you cleaned up real nice! Major suckage awarded

That Cornwell mini 3/8" ratchet is one of my favorites. Seriously smooth. And nice find on the tommy bar too!

There are a few Hollywood wrenches, they are all marked Japan I believe. They’re in the goodwill pile if you want them!

^ I don't need any more SAE wrenches, but thanks... I'm just curious. Hollywood Accessories was a low-end line of tools and accessories, but I cannot remember ANY of their product having a brand name on it.
At one point they were part of "The Orion Group" which also included Cal Custom, Hawk Instruments, and a couple other companies.
Whether or not that is the SAME "Hollywood" - I have NO clue.

Hollywood / Hollywood Accessories, El Segundo, CA / importer and repackager only. not a manufacturer. hand tools and accessories /

Has to be the same brand. The ratchets are branded.
o_O we sold Hollywood for years. I cannot recall ever seeing the name on anything other than the label on the box.

Do you remember when Hollywood shut down?
I got out of the parts business Jan 15 1988, so I wouldn't know. Hollywood was still a going concern at that time.

@3baygarage -

In addition to "Hollywood Accessories", we also carried another line of "Medallion", which offered low-end wrench and socket sets, the ratchets in which would be indistinguishable from that Hollywood unit in my photo above.
We also brought in some "Buffalo" and "Zomax" sets. Again, you would not be able to tell one ratchet from the other if you set them down side-by-side. (It was for THAT reason that on any "warranty" stuff I wanted the store to replace the entire set, not just one piece, because that was the only way to show the piece came from that manufacturer.
None of those four brands had a manufacturer's name stamped on any of their product: the name was only on the packaging. (I worked in the warehouse from Jan 2, 1973 until we shut it down in 1986.)

Note the "Buffalo" set in the ebay ad below is marked "Japan". The product from all four companies might have come from Japan, Taiwan, or Hong Kong - there was no consistency there at all among any of them. All four shipped product from all three countries, and you never knew what was going to hit the floor when the delivery truck showed up.

To be candid, we always thought that all of that garbage was all coming out of the same plant - they all looked the same.

"Buffalo" sales rep was Cal Steiner. We bought over two dozen lines from him, so we were able to negotiate some fairly good deals.
We brought in those Buffalo 21-piece sets out of Los Angeles for $1.43 each freight prepaid, but we had to order in massive quantities. Our "Everyday Low Price" was $8.88, and we'd run them on sale for $4.44, with a "Lifetime Warranty" - no questions asked.

"Warranty" disposition on the stuff was actually handled at the warehouse between me and the sales reps on those cheapo lines - we didn't send the stuff back to the manufacturer. I'd bring the "warranty" box down out of the upper floor of the warehouse, we'd go through it, and they'd go out and pull enough samples out of their trunk to call it even, and we'd toss the stuff into the dumpster.
Same thing with FelPro - Don Lindquist (the rep) carried samples with him he'd give us to offset "warranty". (Defective gaskets? RLY?)

Only reason for this being so long-winded is @Etchase's question:

The manufacturers outlasted US. When I shut down the warehouse, I had to get rid of all the "warranty" stuff that was still upstairs, all carefully arranged in cardboard boxes labeled with the manufacturer's names. Since I couldn't actually return the goods to a vendor, I unloaded all of it on a buddy of mine. I think he still has some of that stuff, if he didn't toss it out.

Something I've been looking for for a while:

53883393621_c7d0abd14f_b.jpg

Not something I already owned this time!

$15--Now I need to buy/make some "dogs" for it....
I did some work on this this AM. Whoever put it together had no idea of how tools work. Note the bolts on the "fixed jaw" aren't counter-sunk. I took the bolts out, flipped the board over and... there were the counter-sinks. Then the wing nuts that hold the legs in place were on regular hex-head bolts--what's the purpose of using a wing nut if you have to have a wrench to tighten it? Off those came and were replaced by a couple of carriage bolts from the spares cabinet. Now it's right!

CRAFTSMAN COMMERCIAL CARRY BOX

Nice haul! But, I'm confused. Are those the items he picked up for you?

I'm presuming there was some sort of swap involved that might be fun to hear about?

My buddy Joe picked up the Craftsman Commercial box and the Bonney stuff for me ,on his side of town. Where I got the ratchets I picked Joe a set of Craftsman adjustables and I had a Craftsman tombstone box set aside for him as well.

Half price day at a sale from last weekend netted a very nice 4 stroke weedeater. I almost bought it at full price. Glad I went back. It fires on one pull and came with a full pack of trimmer line.

VERY slow day for picking here - LOTS of sales - 8 planned, I lost track of TOO's, but limited success. Not a terribly expensive day though:

A craftsman #4 PH driver, I have at least one but these get to be a consumable, - I busted a #3 on my Zuk, and that was a SO (warrantied), so good to have a spare; Bahco hacksaw blade holder - Blade is a throw away, but the holder should be good; and an AC tester - may be NOS unused? A buck for all.

Y1-CM-PH4-Bahco-AC-guage.jpg

4 free tins at one sale - The bigger one was a buck elsewhere - I think it may be a fair fit for a SEVA-123 stove?

Y2-tins-Y3-tin.jpg

A buck each for CD's I cot a surprise when I opened the Roy Orbison case - a D&D game disk was under Roy: and a buck for the wireless charge station.

Y4-CD-s-Y5-charger.jpg

I wasn't paying attention (headache didn't help) so ignore the station - $5 for fro 3 rolls of silk fly line, a Mitchel 308 deep spool, and a trailer plug tester. the note was with the silk line adn is dated 1969!.

Y6-silk-Fly-line-trailer-plug-tester-M-308-spool.jpg

And at a church sale, a refrigerator thermometer, the one I go a few week back was no good, so trying again. I think this one will get double back taped to the inside lid of one of my coolers. And the charge station is there to hold the thing up; I'm not that excited about the charger (my phone does not use the wireless chargers - by everyone else in the house -yes.

IMG_2687.jpegLast night MrsLS, LesserSonJr, LesserDottir3 and I attended a demolition derby at the Troy (PA) Fair, enjoying gyros, sausage, cactus fries and craft beer. Because of our multi-Plymouth/Dodge van history, Mrs LS and I got a kick out of the minivan catagory, but the powder puff round was a true thrill, with one of the entrants losing their roof early on.
IMG_2690.jpegToday my father, son and MrsLS accompanied me to the NY90 50-mile yard sale along Cayuga Lake. A little lighter haul than I was expecting, but I found some goodies for $22:
RUSTED-OUT Craftsman Heritage box with salvageable badge, handle, and hasps, containing various Asian tools but also a 1930s-40s(?) Williams Midget box and partial set, CeeTee slipjoints, English-made needlenose, and a ViseGrips missing the release lever.
BP body hammer head and SO overstamp socket. Stanley ballpein, unidentified hammer stamped AJ Fuller, Stanley unidentified toolholder, multiple Bonney tappet wrenches, Bonney deep socket, Mephisto hex-shaft auger bit, unidentified screwtop woodhandle multitool.
SO VacuumGrip needlenose, two copper plated cabinet pulls, potmetal drill index.
The most fun item was the 32” Genuine ONYX Hickory double-bit axe handle, with which I fended traffic, then finding a 3-1/2# TrueTemper FlintEdge KellyWorks double-bit axe head blocks away.
We also enjoyed a lakeside park lunch of Church chicken meals, and an afternoon session in a craft brewery. A fun day!

I went down to hit the annual town sale in Wallowa, OR, about 30 miles down the road. But no annual sale? I hit one yard sale but that was it, so tanked up on cheap ($4.15/gal) gas and figured I'd stop in at a couple of honey holes.

53885210866_84bb71945a_b.jpg

Not a big haul but all quality. Four sockets--SK, SK, MAC, P&C. A little Stanley standard woodie, a pair of Eifel Flash Plierench (I've sworn to only buy stuff I'll actually use around the shop, but those pliers....) and a Coleman 413F stove in fine condition. Once it cools off some, I'll try lighting it. I think it just needs a little de-greasing and it'll shine.

I was perusing what was billed as a “Giant Book Sale” (disappointedly - all the books were of just usual size), when MrsLS texted me a pic of these. I hurried to where she was, a block away, and bought them together for a dollar. Apparently, they held feathers and porcupine quills. Along with a dozen cigar boxes, they seem to have been the storage for a fly-tier or lure maker. Other than the masking and “invisible” tape, they are in great shape.

The little jeweler’s vise is neat.
Indeed. Found a similar pin vise earlier this year. Most unusual. Lowell, known for ratchets, made them. Link to mine and ensuing research and discussion in the Lowell thread, here. The vintage miniature screw jack in the same haul is also cool, too. I am curious if it is branded. I have a Templeton, Kenly & Co Baby Simplex from the 1934 World's Fair, where they were given away as souvenirs, but they are not toys, and they will hold like 500 lbs or so.
...and a vintage C-clamp.
Looks like a PEXTO "Star" brand. Normally they also have the words "Steel" and "Screw" on either side of the size marking, and on the flip side, "P.S. & W. Co. Southington, Conn.," with or without a little spot-welded in patent tab. I have a small collection going and need the No. 6 if you're not keeping it.
Williams Midget box and partial set,
Early decal. Nice find!

Hit several sales today
Finally found a good set of scissors.

Other highlights include the International Harvester Wrench for .75, the SK, Lectrolite, and Barcalo were 25 to 50 cents each. Honestly, that guy had a ton of older USA made wrenches and pliers, and other hand tools for next to nothing. If I wasn’t trying to get inventory for our store booth right now, I probably would have bought him out of most of it.

I also stopped at a resale shop across the street that opened recently and picked up some cool old photos. Really nice Polish lady owns it and was asking what types of things I was looking for. I’ll definitely stop back in there and see what she finds. She also has a ton more old photos she is going to bring in for me to look through.

Then I won this lot of USA and German made drafting tools for….$2.50.
