Top chest options- help

I'm building a custom welding table and would like to utilize the space underneath for my hand tool storage

Box height is limited due to a 8" thick (tab n slot) table top

Thinking anything up to 22" high is viable
_ no pop top versions as I wouldn't be able to use that space
_ width from 40ish to 72ish

what's a good economical option, Icon is ideal but the pricing is more then I'd like to spend

Any other option I should be looking at?

Perhaps a pop top with the top removed conceding the shallow space on top?

Would the Icon even work? They're 25" high. 20% coupon might take some sting away

Looks like you need an intermediate chest rather than a top.

Unless you're set on "new", you might look into a used box. CL or FB marketplace always has lots of chests and top boxes. Might find just what you're looking for and save a buck as well.

I'm in a small used market, most searches don't turn up many options. I'm pro used, but this is a narrow scope usage

Not a roller, not a top with a flip. Just drawers, slightly smaller than a roller width sometimes,

Not the 40" your looking for but Grizzly has some chests. Can always put 2 side by side unless you're storing some long stuff.

If Icon is more than you want to spend, I'm sure the Russeau made in Canada Tekton is also too expensive but, they're nice boxes.

The Tekton/Russeau are exactly what I want but i cant justify dumping that much into the storage

plus they weigh 200+lbs empty!

Intermediate chests go between the top and bottom and hence neither have wheels nor flip tops.

However, you said up to 22" tall was ok. I'm not sure the dimensions of most intermediate chests will be large enough. E.g. that top one is 4" wide, but only 18" deep and like 10" tall. E.g. you could probably stack two of them, but that likely won't be as economical as buying just a top or bottom that's larger to start with.

The thing is, intermediate chests are meant as expansions to tool chests - so they tend to be only so tall or else the top of the tool chest becomes too tall to access.

A bottom chest without wheels seems like it's probably still too tall for your intended dimensions - but you could build a steel frame around one. Problem is, you'll want space under the top for clamps I presume.

All that makes me thing a top box without a lid is the most likely candidate. Anything you put there will be covered in dust, but maybe a bonus will be that it helps contain the spatter and debris?

Thanks all I had no idea intermediate chest were a thing

I may have found a solution based on price and getting a little creative. Found a 72" Montezuma top box for CHEAP

It does have a (big) pop top but I will retro fit a sliding platform into it and remove the lid partially or fully to have access
I have the time and motivation to make that happen vs just pulling the lid off and making a dust and debris shield...
