Yesterday I went to a ton of sales. I stayed in town and ran some errands. When I got home I was so tired because It seemed like almost every other sale I helped someone load something heavy. I moved 2 fridges, an electric fire place, a freezer and a bunch of shelf’s, cabinets and other misc stuff. So ya I paid about $125 and my back for everything.

Happens sometimes. I'm usually happy if I at least find something.

Interesting vise Wchester.
Yep, and I have been getting more selective than I was a few years back. Trying to only pick up items I can use now or at least hope to use in the future. That said I usually won't leave behind something that catches my interest and is a reasonable price.

I had a very productive hour at my small local car boot sale this morning.

DSCF9977R.jpg

Mercedes speciality tools.

Lumen special pliers with Mercedes star marking. I assume for pulling spark plug caps off.
Hazet 329-2 14mm off set. Also has Mercedes star and part number.
Hazet 767 5/8" spark plug tool. Also has Mercedes star and part number.
Hazet 2771 17mm valve adjustment tool.

DSCF9979R.jpg

Sidchrome Australia 17mm combo. My first Sidchrome tool and i don't see these very often here in the UK.
Stahlwille "Motor" 9/16x1/2 DOE.
Herma brand DBE. I don't remember ever seeing this brand before.
Williams Superslim 9/16 combo. looks unused.
Britool RJ312 5/16 combo.
Proto 11/32 combo. Looks unused.

DSCF9981R.jpg

Proto 10" pliers. VGC
Crescent 6 1/2" pliers. VGC
Eight (top quality Japanese brand) 2.5mm hex T handle. End is a bit worn and just needs a small amount ground off.
Spline drive (triple square) bit.
Small 1 1/8" jaw Silverline vise. Looks unused. Not top top quality, but good enough for such a small vise.

DSCF9983R.jpg

Seal bottle opener. 1960s/70s. made in nickel plated brass by BMF of Germany. Very nice quality.
John Hall Tools 1975 catalogue in very clean condition. I had to have it. I'll post a few scans in the Books thread.

I'm almost embarrassed to say that I got all of the above for £12 from four different sellers.

@LesserSon ***** for that little Williams set! It's weird, up here in the PNW I don't see much Williams at all, I find way more Plomb and P&C...

Anyway I hit the flea and a few sales yesterday, spent too much as usual but found a few things to drag home.

This batch came from a couple different vendors, think I paid $17 for this pic. Older SK box and I think this is for a 1/2" set which is nice cause I have a bunch of homeless 1/2 SK sets. The sockets are mostly Fleet, Indestro, maybe a couple SK and Craftsman. Below that are a couple socket rails which I always need more of, the 1/4" rail has some SK knurled pieces and also some Craftsman metric. Below that are 3/8" Proto, Indestro, and a few SK sockets, and finally a few long C wrenches, plus some double line V, SK, Proto, and a beat Snap on. Finally a few generic socket trays for organizing sets.
IMG_5934.jpg

This pic came from my Plomb guy so I paid too much as usual. $18 for these six pieces. Grabbed the Proto cause I don't see the metric DBEs often, could not leave the little P&C 100 rat behind, then an A Plomb flare nut/open combo, pebble DOE, and the breaker and side cutters are Snap on.

IMG_5935.jpg

These bits came from a yard sale, lots of old stuff at this one but not much in my wheel house. Paid a buck.

IMG_5937.jpg

Finally some bits from a pro estate sale outfit that is liquidating due to retirement. It was interesting seeing their house, it was packed to the gills! 1/2 price day so this stuff was $4 plus tax. Pretty happy about the 3/8" semi deep Plomb stuff as it will go with a box set I've been putting together.

That's the opposite of weird; that makes perfect sense. Even though the major tool brands were national, they were regional at the same time. Because I'm in an old, heavily industrialized state, I do find a little of everything, but way more Northeast brands, especially Bonney, Williams, and all the New England brands. This principle demonstrates itself here on GJ all the time. There are always anomalies, but the regionalism is so strong, if we all didn't know each others' locations, I bet we could detect and ID it after several weeks of hauls.

Yesterday at Habitat Restore. First time ever they had a huge selection of windows. Most were order screw ups, brand new. Most were from the same local glass company🙀.
Nabbed these two Sierra Pacific wood with vinyl clad exterior. One casement. One slider.
These will replace a couple in the garage that were take outs when I built it in 96. I’ll be making screens.
And, the grand total was $105.00😹. A6E41521-3CD2-4D65-B04B-E1FFE57DF210.jpegAAE5EC05-1645-46C7-8FCD-B37A6DD08488.jpeg

Between work, a week of field testing in the Sonoran high mountain desert, and stuff to do around the house, not to mention the oppressive heat and humidity, I haven't done any tool hunting for a few weeks. In fact, these flea finds [Lugz 2024-41] are my first since June 28!

2024_41.jpg

As if to prove the old Garage Sale thread axiom about talking things into existence, I was just talking to Beemer about Pexto Steel Screw clamps - and voila, like magic, a No. 4 appears, and I was just talking to saukit about how plentiful Bonney is around these parts - and voila, like magic, a No. 00 jewelers' vise (1" jaws) and a No. 2860 brake spring pliers appear! :)

I have found a few of these brake spring pliers, which are always fun, because they're shown in the WWII upper echelon tool-set maintenance catalogs. These are prewar (May 1939), though. @LesserSon found the same vise back in March, but I don't recall if it was marked or not. Missing the little cup for the under bench clamp. The clamp, also missing its cup, which has been replaced with a nut, is a dupe, but might be good for trade bait.

I hit up the local swap meet at antique powerland in Brooks Oregon. If you have the opportunity to go I recommend it. I went with my wife and 11 year old son. Of course my wife and son found the most stuff but I was just glad to have them there and glad that my son felt well enough to go.

My wife found a bunch of decor stuff to resell including this monstrosity of a lamp. Mineral lamp from the 70’s that had the questionable woman statue in the center. But ain’t nobody got time for that so my wife put a brass cat in the center. It’s already posted for sale and she already turned down a sizable offer because the market is crazy on these things… My wife also purchased a gold fireplace fan and this bird cage which is apparently for putting plants in, not a bird ?? :)

But onto the good stuff. First booth my son and I walked into had wartime stuff and it wasn’t priced to the moon so deals were made and he is elated. Wartime liner and shell for $15 that some idiot spray painted red. I’m hoping to clean it off. The liner webbing is shot but I know where to get new helmet parts so I can save it.
-1944 dated plumb pick set.$15. My son has been carrying it around all night last night so I know he’s impressed with it and even did some digging in the yard”just to test it out”
- wartime ammo can with the ordnance logo on it for $15. First one I’ve seen in person that’s not totally sprayed or overpriced. I can see it's been repacked but I dont know how to read the date.

Also got a various smattering of tools including 2 craftsman long c pieces and a plomb 1/4 drive ratchet. Nothing earth shattering but all in all had a good timeIMG_0751.jpegIMG_0752.jpegIMG_0757.jpegIMG_0756.jpegIMG_0759.jpegIMG_0760.jpegIMG_0761.jpeg

Well, I guessed the stove would work with the fuel in it, so I oiled up the pump cup and:

53886343822_374ae35d42_b.jpg

Once it cools down, I'll do a little disassembly and give it a good degreasing with Grez-Off, clean the generator, and it's ready to flip at the annual brew fest. For reasons beyond my ken, the younger gens seem more interested in liquid-fuel stoves than lanterns. I always sell as many suitcase stoves as I do lanterns, and would probably sell more if I had them to offer. I've been letting this one "age" on the shelf of a local honey hole as it was priced at $25 and I knew if I waited for a year, the price would be negotiable. $10 was more to my liking, and I'll sell it for around $40.

The 413F dates from between '61 and '64. In '64, Coleman started stamping dates on the tabs of the tank, which this one doesn't have.

After my last shop clean out,I mentioned putting stuff on the curb.

Curb? You don’t have a Habitat Restore?
Corrected that misunderstanding, I meant a Curb Alert, come get free stuff.

Closed, also further away than my house.

Urban Ore is a classic location for east bay folks, take in a trunkful of stuff, leave w a couple of new to you items.

Original post edited, a curb alert, come and get it, not in the bin, yet.

So after two very wet weekend days, today was a sorta dry day, so I put stuff out, posted it about 1130, and left for a dog walk.
i-9cGx88w-X3.jpg
i-Ms2SdZg-X3.jpg

90 minutes later, the right box of wrenches was gone, and the green box of screwdrivers also. Never saw a car stop, so suspect a neighbor grabbed it.

Now, before 230, someone took the rest of the tools. Watched him load them up, had to fight the urge to go help load more.

i-fpT97Hs-X3.jpg

Hope the wood goes before dark, else I may keep a piece or two.

Edit no one took any wood, binnned some Tuesday morning, the rest goes out next Tuesday.

It is better to give than receive, @RTM!

My Bonney 1" vise was a good karma story. After picking through several boxes on a table, and coming up with the vise, I noticed the vendor wasn't there. Not that unusual. Most sellers are also pickers. Or he just went to the loo. I asked his neighbors if he was coming back any time soon, but apparently he didn't leave notice or instructions with either of them, just walked off, which is a little unusual. Most sellers are friendly with each other and will watch each others' stuff. While I was waiting for him to return, a couple other tool scroungers started pawing through his boxes, and inevitably, one of them soon found something interesting, held it up, and asked me what I wanted for it. After I explained that I wasn't the vendor, he kept looking and I kept waiting. After a good several minutes, the other guy gave up. My patience had also ran out, but I did not want to put the vise back, so I walked off with it, planning to come back later. When I did, the guy sort of waved at me and said, "Most people wouldn't do that. Keep it." But I insisted on giving him a buck.

Totally understand that, Lugz. I once bought a plane at a swap, and as it was marked at $5, that is what he charged me, even though I could see the look of disappointment in himself at pricing it so low. Well, this was bothering me, so I circled back to tell him to charge me more. And this apparently made his day, so he told me that just the fact that someone would do this was enough to get this early Stanley #4 at that low price.

I’ve passed by a few of those lamps in the past at estate sales. Never looked up prices!
**yeah its crazy money. Like crack head offer money. I couldnt believe my wife when she told me what they are advertised for but we shall see. My wife already had an offer of $500 and turned it down**
Those dripping lamps were stupid $$$ back in the day too. I never saw the attraction.
** I dont get the attraction either ?? I guess it's cool to look at but you have to maintain them and clean them. Cleaning it was not fun so ultimatley I hope my wife decides to sell it**
Smoke, my wife has a bird cage of that sort, and she puts plants in it too.
Yeah my wife is a big plant enthusiast so I am sure it will end up with some inside it :). I'm just glad that my wife wants to come to events like this with me. She used to not want to go and thought it was a waste of time but now she likes them. She wont go to a traditional "swap meet" with me because those dont have decor and plants but she is all over a flea market like this. Wish we had more of these like this in the PNW. Seems like the south and the NE is full of them but around here, not so much.

Slim pickings this weekend. I only hit one sale held by a neighbor. She’s an eccentric old gal, but there’s a potential for some huge scores as her father was a very talented machinist and she’s finally clearing his stuff out … he’s been dead for 40+ years!! Paid $10 for the lot.

A couple of Cincinnati Tool Co. clamps. Wrenches from Dunlap, Tru-Fit, and Stubai.
A Klein ratcheting driver (needs work) and a Vaco driver (needs a lot of work!)
An Indestro extension
A ‘Senior Crate Opener’
Crescent socket set box (post Cooper acquisition)

So, I needed to get out of the house today, having spent yesterday doing one of several dump/donation runs as I clear out my garage. So, I found four or so sales to hit and set off.

53887684141_b9dc9b101e_b.jpg
First stop was a moving sale just listed that morning, and I must have missed most of the tools pictured. Which isn't surprising, as she was selling everything for .25 to help her grandmother. So I gave her a dollar and went on my way.

53887689886_dcdbb376ef_b.jpg
After that I hit an estate sale, finding the cork, and little else. Then off to a tool/moving sale, where I found SK, Snap-on, P&C, Wright, and Proto sockets, along with a Bell System North Bros. brace with an eight inch sweep. $5

And then, noticing the cool weather, I thought to catch the end of the first weekend of the Steam Up, which Smokeshow talked about above.
53886778682_983ec2985f_b.jpg
After spending my hard-earned to get in, I headed straight to the flea market portion, finding first a Plomb spinner (.25) and then for $3 a Stanley driver, Armstrong extension, two PEC nut drivers, and a Williams DBE. I also got to see working steam tractors, gigantic steam engines, all sorts of vintage tractors, farm girls looking for husband material, farm boys looking for farm girls, home made ice cream, and so on. Well worth it.

My wife wanted to hit up another estate sale and so we went today. Based on what we found, I wish we had went yesterday but we were busy with other things :). Today was 1/2 off day. Some stuff was overpriced at this family run estate sale but some of the prices were very reasonable. We came away from todays buys for $66. Most will be to move onto other homes but a few items were picked up for members of the household.

-3 national geographic magazines for my son
-1942 dated Sears made 1911 leather holster. Unfortunatley someone dyed it black, probably for parade purposes but my son will love it
-war time dated shells on machine gun clips
-still sealed war time bandage in box

-proto mfd era 1/2 deep
-proto professional flat tip driver
-proto mfd small driver
-proto la 3/4 drive socket

Cool Irwin adjustable bit box (empty)

-2 carts to clean up and move to other homes looking for an industrial themed piece

Here are some things picked up at the curb, or not put out at the curb for some of the stuff from above.

The Craftsman wrench pouch was on the curb at a hoarders house, he’s been thinning the herd over the past month, had a roll off there earlier. This seemed something easier to carry than an 8’ surfboard.

PXL_20240725_034837574-X2.jpg

The goodies I chose not to add to the curb alert, including the mismatched wooden boxes included a Vlchek tappet wrench, several Craftsman wrenches, maybe a Lakeside engines wrench, and a bunch of purpose made wrenches. Couple of files too. The Tee is another 3/4”The screwdrivers include two Stanley 70s, a Plomb plastic handle, a bent turn screw, and a Diamond USA stubby. Medium Yankee bit, and two nesting drivers, one is a GAM missing maybe a hammer head, and an unmarked missing it’s guts with damaged female threads.

Those Bell System braces are the same as a Yankee 2101; they have just about the best chuck of any brace out there. Five bucks? Yeah, you ****!

My guess why lanterns might be less attractive to the young: LEDs. From streetlights to handheld flashlights (including cellphones), they are superbright, superwhite and everywhere. It is hard to find a place that isn’t lit by one. Plus, they are not heavy, fragile, don’t take any skill or time to light and they don’t start fires when they tip over.
Now, if someone would invent a backpackable microwave, the stoves will also lose their appeal.
