Saturday I had to run over to the post office and was led off route by a couple "garage sale" signs.
Craftsman 315.108340 7.25 in circular saw 092124.jpg
Craftsman 315.108340 7-1/4" circular saw in case w/owners manual dated 1997. Perfect. She said "I think it was only used once." $10 bucks.
Grabbed the screwdriver for a guy I heard collects this brand of stuff.

I have no idea if that vintage of saw is "desired," but for a practically brand new saw with a case for $10, You ****!

Online local auction ($7). WW2 Navy cot w/ mosquito bar and net. Looks new.

Honestly, these are the bet cots I've slept on. I've had a used one forever and it has almost no sag. This one looks like it's never been used and with the mosquito netting it definitely going to be my go to camping cot.

You ****! And, that reminds me of Boy Scouts summer camp...

My late-step-father's "Skil" that he gave to me needed a new drive end bearing. The "Cummins" "Maxaw" used a 6-inch blade on a 1/2" arbor. The Black & Decker I gave away two nights ago used a 6-1/2" blade. That Craftsman is a 1997, according to the owners manual, which works just fine for me - I can find blades and I don't have to horse around with an arbor adaptor.
They had no prices on anything. I saw the saw and said "How much for the saw?"
She replied with the usual "Make me an offer," to which I replied "Give me a number."
"How about ten dollars?"
Couldn't get my money out of my pocket fast enough.

Picked up these items at the flea last weekend. Life's slowed down enough to post the pics.

Western 50s/60s knife
Birmingham Stove and Range post-war skillet (which is now mostly clean and almost ready to season)
Pair of Mac file dressers
Mayhew center punch
7" snips, post-war
7" cape chisel. Looking for markings on this one, when it comes out of the EvapoRust

ctuai, you know, where I live, you'd go to prison for buying or selling those magazines.

You ****. Especially for the hatchet.
Yah, I'm not quite sure how to get rid of them as you can't list them on resell sites and I'm pretty sure that goodwill doesn't want them. Gun shows I guess, but not really my space. I actually threw away two auto-pull triggers? as they definitely aren't easy to resell.

You **** for that! - Pics off the netting rack setup please? Heck if you are willing, basic dimensions of the rack pieces. I- I'm planning to make one for my cot so looking to steal ideas.
Screen Shot 2024-09-26 at 4.08.58 PM.png

Ahhhh looking at my schematic I realize it's kind of incoherent. The netting is 76" x 26" x 31". The 31" is drop with 27" netting and 14" of fabric that is tucked under your sleeping bag. The poles (4) are 30" tapered to 5/8" on one side and socketed to 5/8" on the other. I think the socket goes into the frame and the taper at the top. Hope this helps. Send me a pm if you need better instructions.

Estate sale ($15): Delta 40-560 scroll saw; Stanley no. 6C fore plane (type 16); Wm. Johnson 6" blacksmith scribe.

Whooof that's the last of it. I'm keeping the scroll saw. I have a craftsman that's a pain to change the blades and to top it off the blade clamp flew off and was transferred to alternative dimension Cam. So goodbye crappy scroll saw. Haven't worked with this one so fingers crossed that all the bits and pieces are there.

That's not Wright Tool & Forge, it's Wright Aeronautical, and that is a wartime part number. I can't find that particular number in either of the two sources I have for Wright Aeronautical tools, one a 1943 British Admiralty Fleet Order and the other the 1945 US Army Aviation Supply Office Class 85 catalog, but almost all wartime Wright aircraft tools had a 5-digit 8xxxx series number, and there are dozens of 81xxx tools, including wrenches, in both references. I think Bonney is the OEM. I have several Bonney wrenches made for Wright Aero and also Gray Marine with that same simple raised lettering. It could be 1930's. Bonney was advertising the heck out of tools for Wright, PWA, and others in their mid- to late-30's catalogs, but there are a lot of Wright Aero engine manuals using a WA-*** part numbering system in the 1920's. So, not too early, and also very possibly wartime.

I hit a small, family run estate sale today, mostly as they showed a pic of a South Bend Heavy 10 in the ad, and I figured that there would be other interesting stuff there. Well, I was half right:
54024655248_e74bb7b5fb_b.jpg
I picked up a Mitutoyo 3-4" Micrometer with standard still in its protective coating, a pack and a half of target cards (for exactly what I shoot), and a book on VW beetles. $22.

I seems the family had sold most of the tools to an old friend, and as the sale was of a tractor repair shop, it was apparently good tools. But, from talking to the son who looked about 10 years older than me, he was able to move it in one lump to a family friend who teaches mechanics to kids. Sounds good to me.

I knew that there was something interesting about the part number…. I picked it up and put it down 3 times before I finally decided to grab it. I tried to research it and came up empty handed? But I know a few folks who take deep dives into these wartime tools. I will ask them to see if they can point me in the “wright” direction 👍 😂.

Snuck out for a quickie [Lugz 2024_46] between the raindrops this AM. As expected, not many vendors. But I was very happy to pick up a new entry for the early K-D collection (a 'PAT APLD FOR' lamp bulb puller) and some material for my ongoing art project (which I am now calling the 'Dearly DISCARDED' series, with some serious gallery interest).

In the LEFT-BEHIND category, some wonderful toy motorcycles. Really wanted the bigger blue CHAMPION or the one that looks like a composite but is metal with the rider leaning way over the handlebars. But they were all too rich for my blood, starting at $15 for ones I was not really interested in, running to $35 for the good ones, and $50 and up to $150!

These are pictures from the past couple weeks. I hit an old tractor show last weekend. I picked up three butcher chisels, a pair of Wm Johnston dividers, and a framing hammer. The picture of the can of briwax, the gedore 27&32 double box end wrench, the wiha bit handle and the Proto 11mm combo, apparently didn't save right.

The weekend before that, I answered an facebook ad for wooden planes. Besides those pictured, there were also some well beat upon rabbit planes already put into the for sale box. The coffin smoother and the thing on the left of it has joined them.

Then there was the $30 walnut Gerstner I picked up at an estate sale. It was marked $100, but I arrived right at the end of the second day. (I also got a fancy router-table fence that I can't decided whether to keep or sell, and an 80s fuji touring bicycle to be sold or used for parts) I bought a new finger pull from Gerstner, and the mirror was in a drawer. Both will probably be installed this weekend. I need figure out how to add some stiches to the handle too, or maybe cheat and use pop rivets. I'm thinking about building a shelf with drawers or the like to go underneath it.

PS. For future reference, Gerstner says 3/8" brads for the mirror.

I have not posted in this thread in forever, but found myself at a "business closing" sale yesterday. Walking thru the shop, I spied a familiar shape under a bench. I knew it was a Wilton vise, but didn't know what model. I asked the owner if it was available and his reply was "take it". If offered him a hug, but he declined. Some decoding and it is a 5" machinists vise that needs a good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. This thing is a beast. I had to tell somebody. 20240926_163341.jpg

This is the Pyramid toaster I picked up last Sunday, Earlier this week I made more of the home brew "De-rusto" solution, and gave the toaster a bath. most things rinsed off when done and a light whisk with a brass "toothbrush" and the results were great!

Before - As found:

Toaster-Before.jpg

After - and after drying over our gas kitchen stove - I'm thinking about "seasoning" these - I have 2 now - on a camp stove and just lightly brushing on Grapeseed oil hot?

Yes, Wards did Riverside. Found a few other pieces, but stuff looked like it was marked higher than I actually paid. Full accounting below:

$20 In Tools
Wards Riverside DSE (Double Saltus End), in 3/8-7/16, 1/2-9/16 and 5/8-3/4. Not sure if there was a 11/16-13/16 option

Quickway Socket Set, with a hex drive bar and cross pin. Inside of the box is a bit worn, but all sockets are there.

1/2" SAE impact set, (kind of got skunked on this one). Only one I pulled out during the sale was SK Wayne, all the rest are Powr-Kraft. At least US made.

Magna-Holder with a sticky Ames indicator on it. Bit of rust, but not too bad.

And for $80, a Watervliet 2.5 ton long arm floor jack. Seems to hold weight, pumped it up and then pressed/jumped on the lifted end, and didn't move. Weighs quite a bit. Looks like Model no 70, can't find too much info on them.

Will take a look. Thanks. I know Wards bought from just about everyone...
Is there a Riverside catalog loaded at ITCL by chance? Curious if there were other DSE sizes made...
