The second box was at first glance a Waterloo, based on the dimples on the lock area. Looking closer, I saw it said Lumidor Industrial.
According to the seller, it came to them from the engine room of a tugboat they had bought. This box has had a much rougher life than the Remline, with the lid caved in a bit, the dividers bent a little, some paint loss, and of course, some rust. For Free, I won't care much. It is a heavy beast as well, not sure where this one will go yet. (Besides in the "boxes needed work" queue.) 26" W, 15-1/2" Tall, 12" Deep

PXL_20241031_161219054-X2.jpg
I bought a Lumidor Machinist Chest over the summer and like it. I'm a homeowner so I'm not in/out of it every hour.

Someone posted a reference to the thread below that tells the Lumidor story:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/lumidor-waterloo-and-sears-craftsman.125445/

For free you did well.

Cheers

Jim

And the rain
Came Hammering
Down.

Garage sale season is over here in my small city, mostly due to it being the six month rainy season, or, as I like to call it, Frau Beemers period of mourning.

Anyway, I hit three rather lackluster estate sales yesterday and today, two of which were clearly the dregs left after moving day, the third I only hit as it is in my neighborhood and I wanted to see the house. Anyway:

From the first sale, two Union dividers and a England marked bicycle wrench. From the other sale, a pack of Craftsman metric hex keys*, a Metric scale, and a Wilton baby power arm. All of that was $10.

*don't use much metric, as it is an inferior and rather crude system, plus I don't do much work on my daily driver. But I do keep some around just in case I need to help the numerically challenged.

Great pick up on the power arm!

Quick trip [Lugz 2024_52] to the flea this morning netted a c. 1921 Park Metalware (pre-Xcelite!) bicycle wrench and very early (c. 1901) and unusual BHM gas burner pliers. I will be posting more photos of the former in the Park Metalware and Bicycle Wrenches threads (joining 4.c's nicer example there) and the latter, which might be a FOAK on GJ, in the BHM and mega Pliers threads.

EDIT: One could say it was a folded sheet metal kind of day! Two guys my age, by the way, who married sisters, now selling off their mutual grandfather-in-law's stuff! A basement full. They said they'd be back. Doing it a little at a time. Looking forward to more.

I went to an estate sale where everything was a buck. Sure I picked up a couple screwdrivers, etc...

This might be considered gross to some people, but hear me out... I picked up a used CPAP machine for $1.

I've been using a CPAP for a while, and let me tell ya, it's kind of a pain in the *** traveling with it. Packing it up, worrying about it being damaged, setting it up at the destination, packing it back up again, etc. I've been wanting a 2nd machine just to be my "travel" machine. So I don't have to worry about breaking my machine I paid 1500 freakin' dollars for (that was with health insurance!).

Anyway, I couldn't believe when I saw a complete CPAP setup with the machine, case, everything marked $1! It's the same make as my current machine, just one model older, but it has all the same features. Now, obviously I tossed the hoses, mask, headgear, filter, etc, and anything that physically touched the former owner. I washed the water tub and sterilized everything. I had to google how to get into the hidden "doctor" settings so I could set all the CPAP parameters to match my current machine. I tried it out last night and it works perfectly. Looking at the system menu- even though it's older than mine, it actually has less runtime hours on it. So that's nifty.

I'm super happy. As many of you know, for months now (and many months to come), I've been working on a house that we may move into. We have the master bedroom and bathroom done, so we camp out over there many times when we're working. To have a 2nd CPAP machine setup over there will be so great. I have extra hoses and masks (both machines use the same supplies), so now I have an entire 2nd setup, and I don't need to disturb my home machine anymore. And when we get the house done, the 2nd machine can be set aside for regular travel.

I had a good tool day, despite our first rain of the season last night (.008) that could have killed it; and thanks to a last ES TOO!

First two planned stops were OK:

Mini Magnum tackle box, what I suspect is a spaghetti fork with angled/twisted tines, 2 Indestro SAE sockets, someone's project spoon Ring - I suspect its Sterling, as no brass is showing on the cut edges, another table top art Stand - this will give me shot 2 at a better solar panel stand, an aluminum Triangle Square - needs cleaned, and a wooden artist's posing mannequin. $7 all!

Y1-Mag-Fork-Indest-Ring-Stand-Square-manequin.jpg

SO driver, Thorsen Conbo, and a pair of needle nose crimpers, marked bell System and made in Sweden; Felindstrom. Rare to see non-US made tools marked Bell! I love Swedish made pliers, as they are always great steels, and a good feel in your hand. $3 all

Y2-SO-Thorsen-Sweden.jpg

The SO after an SG wipe down - needs a bit more detail but looking much better:

SO-1.jpg

And Bell System:

Bell-Sys-1.jpg

Bell-Sys-2.jpg

After a few dud TOO's the Estate sale! I'm pretty sure I was the first "tool guy" in the garage, plenty of people! and it took me 2 tries to follow the dang signs!

I started in and on an old dressers with a few tools and a lot of "supplies" - Craftsman Mini hatchet, BIG Plvmb DBE, Utica 6" electricians Pliers and Channel lock 7" dykes. The top plane was there also, the second plane was in one of two tool boxes on the floor on the opposite side of the garage:

E1-CM-Plvumb-Utica-CL.jpg

E2-Block-planes.jpg

More from the tool boxes - Proto driver, Bernard compound nippers with the 1899 patent date, and a "Matchless" driver made in USA - likely by Stanley as it has the full tang Hurwood grip.

E3-Matchless-Bernard-Proto.jpg

And the rest: A stanley #30 Angle divider square, an odd Hook with handle, the Monkey wrench is made in Germany - there may b more marks under surface rust on the other side, the little bike wrench is a Frank Mossberg, the crate hammer-prybar is a bridgePort, and the very decorative not-quite-pliers are Garanto-Fein D.R.G.M. Saw Set for setting saw teeth. supposedly made in Germany.

I was bracing for Eprey pricing after hearing him talk to others adn he started with the planes at $5 each, then mumbled over the rest he finally came up with $20 and I happily took it!

Some details of these:

e4-Stanley-30.jpg

Onwers mar on the hook handle - whicj is woog not horn - tere were two of these but I liked this one better.

Monkey wrench:

The Bridgport:

and the Saw Set, probably my favorite pick of the day as its so ornate:

Thx Lugz, I'l look that up.

I did find the actual use of the "mystery" fork - its a vintage, near antique, Foley fork - or 6 tine mixing fork for baking generally. So was planned for camping, and will definitely go there now, as I get into the details if the Coleman Camp oven.

The curve and deliberate angles on the fork tines are designed to help the mixing process, and the angles on the stem are to help get to the bottom of the mixing bowl.

We headed for a sale in San Rafael which advertised “tons of tools”. It turned out that it was held in the parking lot of the Elks Club and most of the ”tons of tools” seemed to have been purchased at Harbor Freight. We pulled a few items out of the mess and I spotted a Craftsman Crown creeper that I grabbed. IMG_6992.jpegIMG_6997.jpeg
I probably should have left the odd unmarked plastic ratchet behind. The little flex handle looks to be Long C circle H and the sliding tee is Duro-Chrome which I can definitely use.IMG_6993.jpegIMG_6994.jpeg
The hex key set is Klein. IMG_6998.jpeg

IMG_6999.jpeg
The second sale was in Oakland and had a bunch of DeWalt boxes with a variety of contents. IMG_6995.jpeg
After cleaning of the handle of the adjustable wrench I could see that it was Klein. The little punch is StanleyIMG_7004.jpegIMG_7003.jpeg
I’ll be sorting through the box contents for a while. IMG_7005.jpeg

The Matchless screwdriver is Bridgeport, all right.

I was just speculating about BPH selling the Matchless Driver, in the BPH thread where Lugs ID'd the crate tool a as "Matchless".

I still suspect Stanley supplied this one to BPH, as its in the classic Stanley Hurwood full tang handle design.

Don, does your NOS driver have the steel shank showing on top of the handle? Stanley did thai so it could be smacked with a hammer and not split the wood handle.

It’s the no40 Bridgeport catalog, though I’d think they’d be in other cats too.

EDIT- Yes, featured in cats as far back as 1930, at least.

Ah, here’s mine. Probably 8” before someone modified the tip.

I will say, the profile of the handle of your 10-1/2” one is different.

Don’s is a no98 Matchless Electricians’.
“Matchless” is a Bridgeport quality line of tools, not a specific model or design. Their combination pliers and a hacksaw frame came in a “Matchless” variant.
That no25 catalog lists a “Matchless” version of your box opener. (But I see by your convo w Lugz you already know that).

A friend's daughter wanted a few tools for her apartment. I went to a yard sale that advertised tools and found these for $1 each. I'm keeping the name brands and swapping them out for non name brands I have. The new Levis belt was $6:

Diamond # K18 Pliers
German town Hammer
Utica # 7-G Pliers
Channel Lock Snips # 437
Hout Drill Box (looks new)

I don’t think that the electricians driver goes through the handle to minimize the risk of shock. Here is a larger one that may be one like you found today with the shaft through the handle although I don’t see any markings in the picture. It is in my Bridgeport photo album however. The cat description of the No98 you have does not mention an end cap. But the No95, also billed as a Matchless Electricians’ screwdriver, has a steel cap seperated from the shank by a “fiber insulator.”

The Garage Sale Gods smiled upon me yesterday. Two estate sales, two Restore stops, and one garage sale all told, and at everyone except the garage sale I came out a winner.

I started at the furthest of the ES' which was one I wanted to hit on opening day, but, alas, life kept me home and busy. But, final day was 1/2 off, and there was still enough to make the hour long trip worthwhile:
54112866422_7e1044bc6c_b.jpg
Three tappet wrenches (Vlcheck, plus two unmarked), Walden hammer head wrench, Hinsdale and Herbrand sockets, and a large, well kept magneto set. $10

The next stop was the other ES, and depite the mud and parking was quite the success. I had to drive right through Smokeshows town to get there, but I figured I would either see him there, or know that he missed a good, close sale.
54114202130_847c6ce75e_b.jpg
Duro (I think) breaker bar, Stanley brace, Yankee brace drivers, Sears Roebuck drill points, Long C circle cutter,

54114202925_876d247b91_b.jpg
Delta sanding arbor, Buck Bros. gouge, Winchester driver (needs paint removed), 2 Billings DBE's, Proto ratchet, 2 Plomb pebble DOE's, Bonney tappet, Hinsdale small tools set

54112887347_91c87426cc_b.jpg
And Yankee 1530 small ratcheting drill. As it was also 1/2 price day here, all that was $17. And, I must say, finding the Hinsdale small tools set (plus Vlcheck wrench) even though it isn't complete (and I think I have everything to complete it) is the find of the day for me!

Next I hit a nearby Restore, which I know is Smokeshows favorite one. We have different collecting interests, so I wasn't poaching I swear!, but I did find a Hinsdale speeder and an interesting screwdriver there for $5.25

Next was the garage sale, which had some good tools and stuff, but nothing that grabbed my eyes. So it was off to the last Restore, were I found:
54114187265_d74114ed77_b.jpg
a Walden fixed socket speeder, Allen winged hex key, Herbrand valve adjuster, woodie that I liked, and took a risk on a set of side cutters that didn't work out. Also, not pictured, was a 12 outlet power strip. $19

And after that I headed out for my weekly two beers and lunch.

$13 at Jake’s Flea this morning.
IMG_3722.jpeg
The most interesting item is the reject VacuumGrip linesmans on the top left, made from two identical halves, so the cutters don’t meet. It’s a little rusty to be sure, but I don’t think it’s stamped - just the grip pattern and the forged-in “made in USA” inside the handles identify its origins.

Your saw set was made by one Herr Nettus Schmidt of Zella Mehlis, Germany.
"Garanto Fein" is a marketing slogan along the lines of "Guaranteed Finest" (or something like that.)

Did anyone figure out what the patent was on your crate opener/hammer device? (Sep 29 1908) ?

I’ve seen several over the years, suspect all made by one company, and then the oval is stamped with the brand selling it, most were way too identical to be multiple individual companies making them. Not all, but many.

Here is mine:
A German saw set, cool castings on the handle
