Changed the filter for the icemaker water in the basement garage, then filled some openings around wiring and gas line with duct seal to keep the cold out of the wall above. Spent about 30 minutes trying to get the air out of the line, then realized the small filter inside the fridge was clogged. Took out the small filter and it cleared right up. Also added a few missing wire staples and the support clamps on the gas line that the stove installer left off.

Then I opened the packages that were delivered with more speaker wire, dipole antenna and speakers for the detached garage and pulled the speaker wire and antenna cable into the new receptacle box behind the stereo receiver.

fidgeted some more, punted the AC/DC buzz box back over to the work bay side of the shop and dedicated the back corner a cleaning tools kinda corner. Even put up a shelf to put pressure washer detergents on, and no longer on the floor. I have a feeling once I declutter some more of the cabinets detergents will end up into an empty cabinet.

and I need to push the push broom more over into the corner to leave more room for my pipe clamps.

tomorrow is basically start organizing the cabinets a lot better.

not too far off having to label doors and drawers After a week of moving stuff around.

almost ready to get some welding done so when I head out to my buddies place where my flatdeck is, after I get my processors switched on……I can put BOTH ramps back in the slide ins. It’s been missing one ever since the move down in 2022.

Mostly planning and pondering. I think I have a plan for the cabinets now.

Puttering with my $5 MagLite.

IMG_6201.jpeg

Had a lot of fun removing the retaining spring clip from the top and getting the switch assembly out. Upper battery fell right out, leaving the middle one stuck.

Some time, heat, a piece of closet rod, and a mallet eventually removed the stuck battery. Dremel removed the remains and corrosion. I put three batteries in, and it works.

It’s good for now. I’m probably going to convert it to 16550 lithiums and a LED bulb replacement.

I'm interested in seeing the final result. Please post that up when you do it, as I have a few of those in a drawer that could really use a refresh.

Nice mirrors, but if it was me, and for hunting, I'd want those much lower so as not to obstruct my view
These are spring-loaded, auto rest mirrors. It's not used for hunting. Mostly for getting around on paved and gravel roads in the countryside, checking/repairing the fences and checking on the cattle at neighbor's place down the road from me. I do ride in the woods at the back of my property. I have since clear paths, so no obstructions there.

I've converted both Maglite and the angle flashlight to LED and disposable LI batteries. you can get AA and AAA battery holders that duplicate D and C cell batteries pretty cheap; (use the ones for parallel, not series) and they are good for decades of "waiting for an emergency" use and don't leak like alkaline.

Most replacement LED's will lose Maglite's focusing capability.

Shop Adjacent:

I sold the bed off of this rolled parts truck, and the timeline for removing just got narrowed.
I would have liked to pop the Unimog bed off IN the the shop, but the TurnipTruck is waiting on a replacement timing light and is tying up the whole work bay, so outside it is.

Started at noon, in the shade, eight degrees Fahrenheit.

Four balls hold the tipper bed to the spider. Pinning any two balls and pushing up in the middle of the bed allows the bed to dump to the rear or either side. Removing all the pins allowed the bed to be popped off after the fold-down sides were removed.
IMG_4967.jpeg

I had to drop the air tank and chop an air hose, but then removing ten small 8mm bolts freed the mount from the frame.
IMG_4972.jpeg

Stashed and ready for pickup, two hours start to finish.
IMG_4975.jpeg

The bed will spend the winter getting pretty enough to go on this freshly imported German fire truck.

Got an 83 year old biker that special ordered a trike to take to car shows and swap meets.
We got started with some layout.
Note, he insisted on the cooler, I asked him if we could use a vintage coke (metal) cooler instead, nope!

2000w 48 volt,
I notice you have notched the cooler to fit. Would you mind describing/showing what you do to the interior of the cooler to make it usable?

Here’s a 2D I did a while ago. A piece of 3/4” sch 40 PVC and two cut-down 3/4’ PVC fittings. Cut to length to match the stack of batteries being replaced. The OD of the fittings is approximately D cell. The ID of the pipe fits the battery.

18650 lithium rechargeable battery. Nothing special, get from Amazon or wherever. It needs to be the button top type, not flat top.

The 1/2” copper pipe and two end caps makes up the length difference. I drilled a hole in the pipe to make soldering it easier.

This one already had a TerraLUX LED conversion bulb in it. Those are apparently out of production, but the Lumencraft (Amazon again) looks like a viable alternative. There are lots of cheaper options here too. The TerraLUX retains the MagLite focus, at least a well as the original incandescent ever focused. It still goes from kinda spotlite to fuzzy donut, just a lot brighter.

Overall, works well and I’m happy with the results.

The 3D will probably get the 3-6 battery LED (more lumens) and two batteries. The 2 battery LED works fine on one 18650.

I haven’t converted my 5D to 18650s yet. The pieces are easy, but I miss the heft of five D cells when I pick it up. The 2D isn‘t much different in weight, but the 5D is heavy.

I’m using 18650s because the HF Braun work lights also run on those. One bunch of batteries and a charger for all of my lights, except the AA Mag LED. That gets a set of NiMH AA rechargeables.

The TerraLUX LED retains the focus ability, at least as good as it ever was. It was never great. Some of the other LED upgrades are interesting for their claimed lumens output, but tend to also include “modes” that I do not want.

Nice use of the PVC going to steal that.
The LED conversion I did years ago on my 3 cell retains the focus feature although there is a noticeable hole in the pattern when focused down small.
The light is much brighter so the “hole” doesn’t bother me in the least.

Please excuse my ignorance.
Is there any difference in size between the 16550 and the 18650?
Both are the same voltage, correct?
Why use one type over the other?
Thanks
Edit: I now see that an 18650 has an 18mm diameter while the 16550 has a 16mm diameter.

The major difference is that a 16550 is a UART, and an 18650 is a common size of lithium battery. I don’t know why I put 16550 up there, that was just a brain fart.

I borrowed the idea from someone else. Probably something I found on YouTube or elsewhere.

Dad hack: gfs dad had a lot of b batteries from chemo. Hmmm. Why is this flashlight, uh wow.
Yep. Cut the ends off pill bottles. Stretched out the spring, voila!
I was amazed he did that.

Rearranged some storage shelves in the garage and dropped off these recent estate sale acquisitions. The half-cans are fairly new, but will hang on a wall easily. The Veedol sign is new too, but is USA made, 1/16" steel, powder coated, and 24"x44". It went for ~60% less than one on eBay currently, so I bit!

Fixed a pair of clickit reader glasses that broke in the back; got tools ready for repairing and refinishing a wooden box use to cover the insulation bag for our above ground pipe/valves for the irrigation system in the yard; prepped the wooden box some; shuffled some things on the garage shelves; tinkered with the leaf blower which did not want to start (a Dewalt blower I have lusted after is on sale at Lowe’s so it might be my next one); will tinker with the blower again in the morning and if it doesn’t start I will order Dewalt blower;

Cut some spare shelves for my main bench cabinets, while the table saw was out, cut up a shitload of 2x4s to make camper jack bases for my future camper if it ever comes (I may like just sleeping off the ground in my box camper) then had enough to make one for my trailer hitch Jack, then I pushed all crappy or short 4x4s thru to get them out of my shop and onto the wood rack, which also got its tin cleaned up and cut for placement tomorrow which then I can trim off all the excess when the tin is screwed down.

then I figured oh let’s go bring the bbq in for cleaning which progressed into a oh let’s see if I can modify the kettle table.. ended up being a nope

then cleaned up the shop to have it ready for tomorrow when the bbq gets more cleaned and put back together.

I had everything but the LED bulb on hand, so…

IMG_6206.jpeg

Some PVC, copper, couple of batteries, and the TerraLUX LED from my 5D.

It’s alive.

Focus, wide angle fuzzy donut.

I have a smart charger for rc lipo batteries, but where did you get that battery holder in the top right corner of your fist picture?

Removed the starter from the Mustang as it is giving me problems. Now when I try to start the engine the starter just makes noise & the engine will not crank. :( The starter is not grinding; it seems like it just spins & is not engaging the flywheel. The engine I have is a 1987 5.0, the T-5 5spd trans is from a 1987 Mustang, the spacer plate between the engine & the trans is one that fits for the T-5 trans & the starter is for a 1987 Mustang. I have read where people who have swapped an auto for the T-5 5 spd have used their original starter from the auto & have had no problems, unfortunately the original starter is long gone. I am going to try to get one for a 1969 302 automatic & see if it works. I do not know what else to do.

I'd suggest a factory style mini-starter.

If the Mustang has headers, I would suggest adding some heat wrap to the starter as a precaution before you install it.

I have seen a similar problem with 75-78 Mustang starters used on their small 141 tooth flex plates. Up till then, I thought all small block Ford starters were the same. Here is a comparison of some of the different starters available. May not help for your year model though. Here is a link that I found helpful: https://www.moderndriveline.com/ford-choosing-a-starter/
