Operation rosette delete has begun. We have a lot of doors and windows so this might take a little longer than the F450.

I just have to keep my head buried in projects. An idle mind is my personal worst enemy. We are planning to take the kids up to hang out for the day as we leave to go back to AZ for Thanksgiving soon and are staying for a bit and we just don't know how much time we have left.

Although I too dislike the rosettes, I personally am not a fan of the "bulky" trim. I like the dark wood. That is just me though. I **** and am a modernist plebian.

I had to stop for beer and food. My two worst enemies during any project, one more so than the other, we'll leave it at that
Man sorry to hear about your grandparents....it's going to be tough on all but I'm glad you're recognizing the struggle your grandmother will have. We didn't necessarily expect/realize how tough it would be on my grandmother when grandpa was hospitalized/rehab but it didn't take long to figure out at 89 and 91 or so they were still capable of living together...but it took both of them and without him, she couldn't really live at home and vice versa.
I hope you're able to get down there and spend some time with them on their good days!

We have already told GMA that when the time comes if she just can't be alone we will kick another child down to the basement and she can have the extra main floor bedroom lol.

Annual leaf clean up / soup dinner party at the grandparents house. We got all the leaves cleaned up for them. Everyone in the family makes a soup so we clean up leaves and have a soup tasting dinner of sorts. We had two tractors running and loaded and took what seamed like about 97 carts out and dumped them in the woods. This was one of three "piles".
My cousin brought the billy goat up from the farm.....man does that thing blow!

Thank you! They do have a very nice spot for themselves.
There is about 3ish "clear" acres around the house that's not just solid woods. We clear the whole thing for them. 4 backpack Stihl's, a vacuum trailer and this year the Billy Goat, we got it all done by about 5 hours with our soup supper break. We blow everything into wind rows and then ****!
You can imagine home many leaves we are talking.........

The spousal unit and I took a trip back to AK, KY, TN and all places in between a few weeks back, heck we even had lunch in Lawrenceburg. But on the way out we stopped in OK so I could show her where I grew up. The wife commented on how lovely (her words not mine) the house and property was with the entire property covered by blackjack oaks. I hated those FN trees and your post reminded me just how much having to clean up leaves non-stop come fall.

We used to fill two 90 gallon trash totes with leaves packed tightly that first went through a vacuum/pulverizer. Now I just blow them onto the lawn and go to town with the mulching mower. It takes a lot of passes but it's faster and less labor than blowing/raking into piles and vacuuming them up. I think it usually filled the vac bag 20-30 times.

More is not better here, just an FYI
You want an approximately 1 to 1.5" bead on the interior most part between window frame and framing and it will leave a gap between the sheathing and the "exterior surface of the interior foam bead" if that makes sense. I know the desire and natural tendency is to fill the cavity full as it's insulation and "more is better" but here you don't want that as that may cause issues down the road with any incidental water that gets into that shim space

I wasn't able to dig all the old "pink panther" insulation out of the jam. There were two layers of it. Hope this makes sense, working interior to exterior it goes: Trim, foam, batt insulation, exterior. The foam still has a layer of batt behind it that I wasn't able to get out.
Yup, common practice.
Thought was that the insulation in the shim space helped with thermal performance and it was called for in most manufacturers instructions. Over the last 25 or so years but especially the last 15, most manufacturers have dropped the insulation packed in from their instructions but it's still done by those who learned it originally.
The industry in general has learned that more important then that marginal thermal gain from insulation packed in is a good air seal and ability for incidental moisture that gets into the shim space to get out. So an interior seal of backer rod and caulk or low expansion foam is generally called for, along with leaving the shim space between window and framing open/free of insulation. As you pack that insulation in, if any incidental moisture does get in the insulation hinders it getting out, keeping rh shim space wet. If wood stays wet long enough...bad things happen....no Bueno.

I'll adjust my installation practice and try to get a little more batt out so that there is a better "air pocket" back there behind the foam. I've got 10 more to go so we can refine our process .

Anybody know anymore about cow feed than me, so literally anything at this point haha.
The farm we bought her from gave us bags of this included with her. If she (for us) is strictly a dairy cow and not being shown or fed out for processing, is this still her "best" option.
This is obviously only a part of her diet. She gets pellets mixed with this (I'd have to go out and look what they are), hay, and is free in a grazing field all day. So she eats plenty. Just nutritional wise.....

That looks to be the replacement for on farm COB, corn oats, and barley. Check with a local feed mill in your area, they might have a cracked corn, mineral and protein mix. Fill an old gravity wagon pour out into 5-6 gallon buckets. The feed mill might only sell by the ton.

Yes we do have a couple grain outfits nearby. I was gonna take the tag and see if they can "make it".
I don't know exactly what it is but my cousin gets his dog food and everything from there.
He told me they will fill sacks, those big forklift style gravel/sand bags, all the way up to whatever you want really.

It's been getting chilly at night so it was time to close in the shop dog door for the winter. There is a framed in dog door under one of the work benches in the middle room which even with a magnetic flap let's in a decent cold breeze. A patch of metal on the outside which gets caulked in and on the inside I built a door that I can take on and off. It's just an insulation sandwich which pops in the frame and gets screwed on. It's crude but it works.
