Looks like a gimmick. Cleaning those won't be fun either. Are they USA made?

Doesn't say MADE IN USA on the front label. Actually, all the cman tools with that red/white front label are made in china/taiwan.

Probably made to appeal to todays modern pretty-boys who are in fear they might hurt their pretty manacured hands using a real tool. :lol_hitti

Kidding!!!

Personally I've never seen the need for cusioning on wrenches. I've never seen the need for much more than a basic plastisol coating on pliers handles. Personally I hate the thick heavy rubber grips that are appearing on a lot of hand tools these days. I can only see use for some of them if they offer insulation and protection from electric shock or such.

They look like they'll be more attractive to gift buyers than raised panel and I bet they're pretty cheap, if they have a matching ratchet I'd be inclined to give that a try in-store.

One thing is for sure; they are definitely trying to expand the Craftsman line, I don't think I have seen this much expansion in awhile...

Doesn't one of the offbrands already make a set like this? I swear I've seen padded rubber grip wrenches like that before.

Just in time to get them shoved into someone's stocking for Christmas. Price point is under $50, etc. Its all about marketing this time of year.

Harbor Freight has/had them.

Sweet, they're "expanding" the line with more gimmicky ********. What craftsman needs to do is take a step backwards and focus on making quality USA tools at an affordable price. Instead of ***** grips, how about a wrench set that doesn't skip sizes.

Which set does Craftsman have that skips sizes? I agree they need to step back and regroup and cut out the gimmik tools. Just nice solid made in the USA hand tools.

Yes, and every single item involved in this expansion is made somewhere other than USA.

I would expect to see these under the evlov or companion line; I guess they are off shoring the Craftsman brand. Historically, the lower line stuff was put in the other non craftsman line; something is definitely changing... more pressure from other stores (e.g. harbor freight) or they are looking for cheaper oems? Maybe, with the changing to offshore already showing up; they just don't see any reason to NOT keep going in that direction?

Attractive to people looking to give gifts.

Useless **** to people getting the gift (rubbery handle junk will never stand up to normal solvent/oil/grease exposure and be a pain to clean

It's a shame, because if you look at the OEMs Sears has selected—Vaughan, Mayhew, Western Forge, Lisle, Kastar, SK, and so forth—you can clearly see that, at some point, somebody really cared about Made in the USA and went out of their way to attain it. Of course, part of it is the OEMs themselves going offshore (Danaher, Vermont American, and Irwin among them), but I can't help but think Sears management just doesn't care anymore.

Anyway, the grips on these are pointless and way too huge anyway (compare to Wiha). It seems like they missed the opportunity to at least include clearly marked sizes, color-coding, or something to justify their existence.

Wiha has sold soft grip wrenches for awhile.

http://www.wihatools.com/500seri/500mm_wrenches.htm

http://www.wihatools.com/500seri/500in_wrenches.htm

I've also seen ATD version in the lube tool section at Pep Boys and other parts stores.

It's almost October and that means the new Christmas season tools are coming out. Do you think the soft grip wrenches are the 2010 version of the spline wrench and dogbone?:wtf:

As for Craftsman's line expansion consisting of imported tools, what other tool company's new products are US made? Anyone? Even the tool truck brands new stuff is mostly imported. Craftsman did give us an overpriced US made 1/4 drive flex head ratchet though.:headscrat

Focus group outcome...guaranteed. Plus as has been said, they will look great in the Black Friday and Christmas color ads.

Perhaps Sears in listening - people on GJ hate the feel of the raised panels. This would solve that. :bounce:

I'd try 'em though.

Reminds me of a dog wearing a sweater. Seems useless to me. Just another reason to create incremental sales. Craftsman is my brand of tools too.
