Here's the 4.5" and 5" Palmgren engineers vises. They are both using the Irwin t4sb swivel bases in the pics. (these have been discontinued but you can still get some on Amazon) The lockdown nuts are my setup as these 2 bases didn't come with lockdown bolts as I bought them open box. They are the same base that is on my Record 5". The swivel bases on Amazon should come with those style lock down nuts. Obviously the 4.5" model is on the right in the pics.20241201_113130.jpg20241201_113150.jpg20241201_113157.jpg20241201_113205.jpg

OK, I ordered the base, too. $100 total for a new vise, shipping included.

The 4.5" Palmgren was sold out. 5" will also make this the largest vise in (or outside) the shop.

I really need an outside vise for things like grinding. Keep the new dirt with the old dirt.

Here's an update on the mini bench vises for anyone interested:

Prototyping is complete and production has began! As brilliantly suggested by @LeonardY I have designed a snowflake to be clamped in the jaws for the purpose of hanging on your Christmas tree. The hardware arrived and I'm happy to share that the vise is fully functioning just like a full scale version. All that's left is for me to create a listing on my website to take orders. Thank you for looking!

It was really just dumb luck and my persistent pathological need to keep shopping for new tools that put me there. The guy was practically in my back-yard. Very pleasant guy. Honestly neither us really knew what we were looking at till I got it home and started looking around for info. I’m beginning to think I may have uncovered a unicorn.

Gentle teardown got both the base and center swivels acting again. The center one is stff, but that’s probably a factor of it being clamped in the tight position all its like, and not used much.

Slides are pretty good and the machining marks and srapings(probably original) were still showing. Just dirty.

Central nut is in good condition. Main screw looks extremely good (not warn-down) and still in good condition. Moves a lot better since the clean and light grease of the treads.

Here's a before and after of the now-cleanish Joseph H. Lewis Pat 65,097 of May 28, 1867:

54175279775_9dbb73da5f_b.jpg

54177433975_9f225714fe_b.jpg

I removed the many layers of old paint, dirt, pigeon poop and loose surface rust with a lye bath in the ultrasonic. It got a coat of CLP to retard future rust--it's the lightest, easiest to remove oil I have. I put a few drops of ND 10wt. oil on the moving/wear surfaces. Runs smooth as a 150-year-old baby's bottom!

I'll do an in-depth dive over at the Vice Info thread.

anyone know what base works on the palmgren 6 or 8?
I'll know for sure on Thursday of this week. I've ordered a few off the shelf items I found on the net that are going to be here Wed night. The bases are massive so none of the 8" swivel bases I have on hand will work (New Yost 8" bases I have on hand). When Irwin Bought out Record they didn't keep producing the bases for the big 6" and 8" but for a few short years. All of these Palmgrens have the same style bases as the Record line of vises and are sized the same depending on the model.

I have both 6" and 8" Palmgrens and they have basically the same base within a 1/16th or so. So Whatever I find out works for one...Will work for the other. I'll post up when I find something. I wouldn't mind slightly modifying the Palmgrens base if I found something I know will work. The 6 and 8" I have are going on benches so I want them to swivel. If they were going on Stands I wouldn't give a care.

Found a local FB seller with this Reed 204. $60
Seems mostly okay but looks like someone floated a pond of brass into it.
Feb/1940 (?)

Thanks for looking.

Local Second-Hand Antique (the name, really) store has one of those. Missing the base and rustier/more beat on than yours. $260. It's been there a while and it'll be there a while longer.

A 'good" brazing job on cast iron is any that sticks, so yours looks fine from here. Nice score.

Those Palmgrens are certainly a bargain ...local tool shops have them for around $600.
I think the enclosed screw ductile ones are way up there. But no matter what... these engineers style 8" and 6" vises are normally $300+ usd.

Good repairs are nothing to worry about. I have used and abused several vises in large industry that failed from earlier abuse and were repaired, some by me. Broken dynamics, statics, swivel jaws and bases. Some have been taking a licking for decades and still ticking.

I wish I had pictures of them. I did not have a camera or phone when I worked in the repair shops The only brazed vises I currently have were not done by me. When younger, I worked with a neighbor who was a whizz at welding and brazing almost anything cast. He taught me to be fearless with repair attempts and accept they will not always be successful. It is already broke. It will work or it won't. You will only be out time and you learn a lot with each project.

When I came here…. Could not find a single decent 4” vise, which did not come off a boat, and was less than 200-300 bucks. Saw the need, eventually saved, cleaned up, restored, & sold a couple dozen good USA 🇺🇸 vises, and helped several others with parts for repairs. Couple years later, those 👆 there popped up, showing me a likely reason why demand evaporated.

The fb market combined, with local thieves/scammers, as well those local who are working with overseas scammers during COVID, made selling not only impossible, but dangerous… they think they are slick, but remained completely 💯 ignorant of the fact that they are the 15th to 20th scammer, inside of five minutes of listing to contact you.

Just checked my logs… I had one listing that resulted in 79 messages from 5 legitimate market users, so 74 fake accounts in 2 hours, of those 5, 4 were what I call “softies..” meaning they only contact you seeking to lowball.. Or rather; only seeking desperate sellers for flip.

I have had 2-3 messages which disappeared the instant they messaged about a fb listing, which I believe demonstrated at least SOME efforts by fb to thwart the scammers.. way to little, way to late.

Remember, if/when a family member dies, please lockout their fb profile.. there’s an entire market for those no longer with us accounts’ to be used on/for fb for scams. The truth is, nobody round here gives a dang about quality American brands, and they are perfectly happy to buy the stuff made overseas, by the metric ton, off shelves from hd/lowes. Awhile back during my quest for one, there was a 4” Wilton bullet, with no base plate, at a pawn shop, which was still there last time i looked, for 350$… I think said factors, combined with the extraordinary cost of living here, leads to everything on the used market being marked up from their buy-up price. Makes perfectly fine sense, and is really a reflection of the geographic economy & market. Over the last four years it got a lot better, but the enabling factor for the scammers is coming back, so it is about to become hell, all over again.

Some mighty fine vises there… but now I am jealous of them solid shelves! Having some industrial shelving was a goal.

I'm restoring a Wilton C3 vise and have run into an issue that I need a little help on. The dynamic jaw is slightly loose on the slide. It rotates about 3/16" right and left. The key and keyway fit well. The slop is definitely between the slide and the front jaw. First two pictures show how much it moves. I found some info indicating that the jaw is threaded on the slide and a tapered pin holds it in place. Is that the pin I see at about 1:30 in the last picture? I'm tempted to try to hammer that pin further in, but before I do something stupid, I'll ask for guidance here first. Anyone have any experience tightening one of these up? Thanks in advance.

Yeah… I guess country any which of us is in, is no longer much of a factor… the issues are global, now. Good luck on your hunt, Man! 💪

I helped with one, and have another. The fix one one was hokey, but worked.. Found some thin steel sheet stock at the chain stores, and cut length long shims, for the keyway. shearing such thin stock rolls the lip called “bow” or “twist” on the steel stock edge, which can be problematic, so had to hammer it out and file some, but that did not take to long. Since your just cleaning up some slop, that may be a viable option.

Thanks, Paulsomlo. That's what I found as well. I was thinking if I push that pin in and it still rocks back and forth, maybe drill another hole at 10:30 and hammer in a roll pin. But first, install the screw and tighten it up with the jaws aligned. I guess the trick would be how to locate the hole so it catches part of the slide cylinder.

I am here to share my Joy, :)

The 6" SQ has just arrived - it's frickin massive, dwarfs my Steel 5 1/4" HP I've been doing this week and the 4" SP

47 kg, 104 lbs

I believe it to be a 1930/40 's example, with the shape of the leading edge, handle, dots between letters, really good condition, one very small chip and that's it apart from minor usage marks- and a dead straight handle, will wonders never cease.

Oh, and I'm really happy with it in case youse wondered

6 mean 6 inches, S means it is steel as apposed to casted iron, and the Q for quick release. Neat stuff! Never seen one in person so thanks! show her off if you spruce her up, too!

No, (I mean it nicely)

6" Standard Production, Quick Release

the HP is for heavy production, L for light, In Dawns if it is steel it will be marked as such otherwise it will be cast iron. The Steel Dawns are fairly rare, out of the 30 I have only 4 Steel and that's after specifically hiunting them down.

Ordered that "Palmgren" model but got a note from the seller saying "We don't ship to PO boxes".
Remains to be seen if they'll ship it to the address I gave them. Not a big deal. I still have that big-*** Parker in the kitchen sitting on the dry sink. (y)

I'm sure if it's a actual address, it'll get to you. Most overweight items can't be delivered to a po box.

^ I have two boxes in my garage stamped "G.W. 20.2 KG" on the side, both of which were delivered to the PO box.
A little vise shouldn't be an issue.
I do not accept deliveries of any sort at my residence, unless it's Jesus bringin' me some salvation for my sins.
