Having online auctions is easier for the auction company to have a shill in the wood pile. At least in person auctions, people can see a face with a low bidder's number in hand.

For the large part, live auctions don't matter anymore anyway.

They've wised up and anything valuable is pulled and goes to Ebay.

All that is left usually is the "leavins" - otherwise valuable items in poor condition, heavy or large items, furniture/appliances, lawn garden and tons of ****, that can't be given away at garage sales.

For those not familiar with the word....

The best auctions I have attended were on Wednesdays and
Thursdays.. The auction is even better if the weather is terrible. Rain and or snow are the best to keep bidders away. If and when the food truck shows up, the bidding falls off. One auction I bought a really big compressor with bad pump bearings for $20. I resold it in the parking lot for $500. This guy had a set of the correct bearings at his shop.
My shop is littered with rainy day Wednesday super deals.

I bid on online and online/live auctions every now and then if they are close enough that if I actually win it would not be a bad drive. But I bid very low for that "Who knows?" factors. I never win. But we also have Public Surplus auctions around here often and I've gotten a lot of stuff. Just last week I picked up 5 trundle style beds. (Essentially large boxes.) Only bought them for the 4/4 oak construction. Got them home, took them apart, now have some nice oak boards and an unexpected surprise that the plywood bottoms are 3/4" furniture grade maple plywood in great shape. Nearly full sheets. Compared, say, to Lowes, I got at least $250 worth of quality lumber for $15.

I’ma big fan of online auctions. There is no way I can stand for hours at a regular auction, with bad back and knees.
I don’t buy many expensive things.
My wife always laughs at me for spending more on gas to go pick up, than I spent on tools.

I’ve spend hundreds of thousands on online auctions over the years with 95% or more being through Steffes. They charge a 10% buyers premium with a max premium of $1,000/item. They sell mostly equipment and land but have an occasional shop or household auction. I’ve also sold machinery with them and they are reasonable with their fees when you consider everything they do to get the item listed. For example I sold an International 1086 a few years ago. The dude took 160 pictures of it from every angle possible with closeups of just about everything. We discussed starting price and he gave an estimate of selling price, their commission and my likely “pocketed price”. The tractor sold for $15,600 and I got 8% less than that. They made $1,200 on me but I’d have spent more than that on advertising alone to get it viewed by as many people as it did. If I remember correctly there were 15 bidders on it all together.

I joke with people that having adult money and internet access is not good for my pocketbook when it comes to online auctions :lol_hitti
