I am looking for a small, 1/2 ton or less, BIDIRECTIONAL rope puller. Basically a chain hoist for rope, with a lever. Or a come-a-long that does NOT spool up the taken up rope.
Huh?does NOT spool up the
Both are examples of capstan winches.
I thought of a boat trailer type winch when you said it.Both are examples of capstan winches.
Those look really cool. About as expensive as you would expect for something that looks like it belongs on a sailboat, but really simple and slick. Both are examples of capstan winches.
So, are you asking for something that can pull the rope in both directions?I am looking for a small, 1/2 ton or less, BIDIRECTIONAL rope puller. Basically a chain hoist for rope, with a lever. Or a come-a-long that does NOT spool up the taken up rope.

Load/unload heavy, wheeled up and down ramps into the back of my pickup. So, are you asking for something that can pull the rope in both directions?
Need more details, what are you wanting to do?
Boat winch or Warn drill winch wouldn't work for you?Load/unload heavy, wheeled up and down ramps into the back of my pickup.
Looking for something smaller and lighter duty and less expensive. Also not permanently mounted.Boat winch or Warn drill winch wouldn't work for you?

I have a Massdam rope puller. Don't know how to post pictures, but you can google search it. It does not wind up the rope. I think mine is 3/4 t though. Don't know if they make smaller
These guys both seem to have solved your problem. It feeds the rope out the bottom.Looking for something smaller and lighter duty and less expensive. Also not permanently mounted.
SEGUE - First, sometime I need to plead guilty to the following ! Why do people propose solution to a problem that DO NOT FULFILL THE INITIAL PROBLEM STATEMENT !
I thought the MAASDAM were PULL only !These guys both seem to have solved your problem. It feeds the rope out the bottom.
For use on a sailboat, multiply the high price by about ten! Marine bronze is expensive and winches is shiny! Those look really cool. About as expensive as you would expect for something that looks like it belongs on a sailboat, but really simple and slick.
So based on this, we assume gravity will take care of the "unloading" part right? So it needs to be able to control the payout under load, but not necessarily pull in both directions right?Load/unload heavy, wheeled up and down ramps into the back of my pickup.
You clearly have a very particular application in mind, but don't want to tell us what it is. So no surprise you get answers that assume you're doing something else.Looking for something smaller and lighter duty and less expensive. Also not permanently mounted.

"Pull" is was a poor choice of words on my part !So based on this, we assume gravity will take care of the "unloading" part right? So it needs to be able to control the payout under load, but not necessarily pull in both directions right?
I can't be more specific than this !You clearly have a very particular application in mind, but don't want to tell us what it is. So no surprise you get answers that assume you're doing something else.

You could explain why it cannot spool up the rope."Pull" is was a poor choice of words on my part !

Harrington sells a 1/4 ton with a 15 foot chain. Not cheap though. A small lever hoist might be just the ticket. I'm sure jet or even harbor freight has something comparable but cheaper. Those little ones can't weight more than about 5 lbs.You could explain why it cannot spool up the rope.
You could have specified as small/light/cheap as possible instead of giving a hard "1/2 ton max" spec.
So, why can it not spool up the rope?
Why doesn't the maasdam or drill winch work? (too expensive?)
What is the price range?
FYI you can get 1/4 ton lever hoists with 10 foot chains, and I think you can also order the chain if you needed longer.
I thought the MAASDAM were PULL only !
I wish they made a light duty one, 1/2 ton is way more than enough !I bought a few of these, never used then but says it will do what you're asking, see instructions.
It's actually very light in weight, propabably won't be much lighter if it was 1/2 t.I wish they made a light duty one, 1/2 ton is way more than enough !
