Just out of curiosity, what is the very earliest Snap-On tool (with provenence) that's turned up, I imagine that it would be quite the prize in the Snap-On world.
I haven't seen one of those with side hole. I'm not sure if these ever had a ball or any functioning lock. It seems that would have fallen apart when the head was rotated. The gap seems large for a small ball to make constant contact.Maybe the holes are for a ball. I do not have an example with the ball, but what else could the hole be for.
Here is a 33 with the ball on the inside side, I think this started in about 31.
Hmmm, that may be a possibility. The image is not good enough for me to see the shape of the hole. Could it be a center drilled hole to use a tailstock when turning the OD?I’m thinking the hole was part of production. I saw that, how the catalog is worded. I guess it’s true, when new anyway.

Are these the only bits you have seen that particular stamp? Assuming, "Non Replaceable," and functioning the same as the "No Guar" notices on all their small cruciform bits.Non Rpl.
Jibes with the 1937 Phillips patents.no date codes.
Only show up in the 39 cat.
Yes, but its very light. Also it shows on the MP12 an MP22 bits from the early 40s@snapmom does the No. 28 have a Phillips license? The shape looks a little "off" to be a Phillips. Possibly a Frearson?

at's probably about mid 40s pretty sure I'll have to double check. It does seem to have phased out, but from what I "understand" (and by "understand" I mean Slightly educated speculative understanding) the Not gaur is basically saying it's absolutely not covered at all under warranty while non rpl is like "we'll see if we can fix it but don't hold your breath" hard to say though. They seemed to be very inconsistent. I've seen non rpl and not gaur m-21's and a bunch of things that usually are marked with either one that aren't and others that I have no idea why it's marked not gaur. Like this pickle fork here with these screwdriver bits that are marked not gaur but these others aren't it's odd

It would help to see some more examples.
The good news is, you can edit it, and no one will know.Wow I bungled that last message up big time. Seems like something is different when uploading pics now
