"Protecto" vise sleeves? Looking for non-magnetic replacements

Hi all,

I have an older '96/'97 Wilton 4" bullet vise. I think it's a 400N? Anyway, I have these "Protecto" rubber vice sleeves that I really absolutlely love that fit over the jaws that are unfortunately pretty beat. Made by Aircraft Tools, Inc. Los Angeles. I can't find anything online! I see no catalog either on their website.

The jaws are really in good shape so don't really want to get nylon jaws to replace the original ones in the vise.

All the other vice jaw caps I see for sale online are magnetic which I really don't want. The stuff I work on is very sensitive to magnets.

Anyone have any ideas on where I can find NON-magnetic vise jaw sleeves?

You could also remove you metal jaws, and replace them with a solid Delrin or wood jaw, and get you soft jaws built in. Both work easily with woodworking tools.

I have a bunch of different ones by Lisle; they all do have a weak stick-on magnet strip on the top edge, but I'm sure that could just be removed with a scraper if it's an issue.

Have you considered having something 3D printed? On one of my 3" Wiltons I have the jaws held in place with roll pins so just slip them off and replace with ones of the material that suits the job at hand. There are lots of utube vids on how to make vise jaws and some are just slip on styles.

Apparently not in the right places (google, ebay, amazon)... :dunno:they all appear to have magnets incorporated into them. Was hoping for something like this old Protecto:

The nice thing about the Protectos is that they slip onto the existing jaws. There's a lip around the edge of them that hold them in place. These Lisles don't have that lip (that's why they have the magnets...).

Is there NOTHING like the Protectos available anymore? Hard to believe if true.

It's not exactly the same, but you could probably get a nylon non magnetized set and use an old inner tube cut into rings to slip over the jaws and pads to hold them on.

Yes, I have those, and another style with some V-grooves. I also have one of the rubber faced ones that I removed the rubber from and turned them into a flat aluminum cover. There's a tiny ridge at the top that they use to align the rubber, but I just sanded that off.

Edit- yes, they're universal and can be used on multiple jaw widths.

I’ve had the Lisle set for years, use them a lot. I have to replace the magnetic strips every few years though, they loose their magnetism. Tried to remagnatize them, but failed. Pads are great.

-I did a quick search before my first reply using "vise jaw cap" (or something similar) and pulled up quite a few options so I don't know why they're not coming up for you. There were many that did NOT have magnets. What was used in the dozens of shops I worked at were made of brass/copper (those are available from several places) that were either purchased or shop made. This type always had a set of "fingers" that were to be bent to the contours of that particular vise. In adjusting the fingers properly they will go on in a slight rolling motion and sorta snap on and stay put. Removal is just as easy and on/off takes about 2 seconds per jaw, no magnets involved. You could even glue some rubber to the brass if that's what you want. Making a set (instead of purchase) is fairly easy, plenty of drawings/instructions available on the internet. A new apprentice was often tasked with making things like that during slack periods to test their skill level. Cut out the flat pattern, position it in the vise, and begin bending all the tabs/fingers to the contours. A bit of fussing with it for on/off fitment and it's done. I hope this helps you or somebody else out there.

You cross-posted me with the description of what I was posting! Coincidence? I think not.

I made the patterns for mine--each vise is unique--using card stock (old file folders from the office). To get them perfectly symmetrical, only make one half of the pattern and flip it.

I have a set of Protecto rubber jaws on my Paramo 4.5” vice and like them very much. I have other sets of jaws but the Protecto jaws are used most.
