Tried to help a neighbor with an O2 replacement... didn't go well.

20250123_121215.jpg

I heated that thing up dull cherry red, didn't help. Thing locked up within about 1/4 turn.

20250123_120626.jpg

I think the threads are still in there, but I can't get to them. I tried quiet a few things... but this was the solution.

That's usually addressed with a 'dental' pick and a spark plug thread chaser.

I tried the pick, I tried a chisel, I tried a die grinder. I have a 'reverse thread chaser' that I tried, I tried honing it out with the proper sized drill bit, I tried chasing it with a tap. Then I welded it shut.

Nice. You just gave me an idea. I've been looking for a stand for my old monster HP laser printer. I keep looking for one of those old printer stand cabinets, but a beefy old night stand might just do the trick.

Funny story about this. I usually do my own plumbing, but for big jobs I have a plumber I call. I happen to know where he lives, and this nightstand was on the curb in front of his house one day. Eventually he'll be back at my house for something and I'll watch to see if he recognizes it.

If the driveway counts, crawled under the daughter's car to survey the damage. I'm curious how low the oil pickup sits in a VW pan, makes me nervous to run it now that I see it in the light of day. I told her I was going to go get some of those Jeep Trail Rated badges to stick on the thing since it has now been in and out of a fairly deep ditch.

At least the pan looks pretty easy to replace if needed.

Decided to try out a propane bottle-top heater. I've actually had one for a long time; it was left in a cabinet of a camper that I bought years ago. I never used it, just put it in my shed.

Well, I stopped at a junk yard and they were heating their whole office with one, and I thought "I didn't think those little heaters would work that good...". So I decided to try mine out. I grabbed the tank off my grill and put the heater on it, took it outside and lit it. It all seemed to work well, no leaks, steady flame, so I took it inside the shop. It actually heats pretty good! I didn't run it super-long, but I think it'll be handy.

I have electric heat in my shop, but it takes hours to get up to a comfortable temperature (I don't heat it when I'm not working out there, so it's always starting from dead-nuts cold). I think for a quick job, that propane bottle heater would be nice because I could put it right next to me, lol. Or at least I could run it along with my electric to get the temp up faster.

All in all, it's a handy little heat source that I didn't have to pay anything for, so I'm all about it.

And just think of all the things you can set on fire with it!

Only gotcha, make sure you vent the space a bit. That heater will work just dandy, long after it's asphyxiated you.

I needed to make a circle 2- 1/2 inches in a piece of wood with an 1/8 inch depth. I couldn't see how to stay inside the outlined circle due to the base plate. I used a piece of plexiglass to make a base plate so I could see what I was doing.

More horizontal space retrieved back.

starting to think painting the lower walls all around the shop to be similar to those cabinets/the Bronco with a bright orange stripe all around. This bench will get a backsplash too out of plywood just as the other one will. Haven’t figured out what color to do my benches. All I know is that grey is too light.D4352F07-E782-4AD0-82CC-F3C76EA8C048.jpeg

Dog, no. The poor girl just passed, and she was only a few years older than me. RIP Teri.
Kay, Teri wasn't old, she was struck down in the prime of her life. I mean, I was almost three months old when she was born (84 days).
Wait a minute now i've been married 47.x years and I'm not that old.............
@Wrench97, for a second there I thought you'd been married 47 times. The day after our anniversary we consider ourselves married another whole year. Since last March, when asked, we reply "We've been married 63 years" even though that won't be technically true until late March 2025. It's a lot like my mother telling people she was 100 when she was only 94 so rather than argue, we put a '100' candle on her cake when she turned 95.

Same here. Our 46th anniversary was last month and I just turned 67 in September. If you know, you know.
@welder4956 , I waited until I was 17 to get married. I know, teenage marriages don't last so ours could be on the rocks before we celebrate our 63rd anniversary. At this point we rarely hear what the other said so it's quite possible she's been asking for a divorce for years. As long as I keep the TVs going and provide access to movies we've seen before (but don't realize it until the credits are rolling) I think I'm OK.

Had I not returned her badly maintained bicycle to like-new operation, I'm pretty sure someone else would have snatched her up.

Well, it was actually last night, but I purchased and powered up a genuine locomotive headlamp assembly. Convo wall piece for the new build, so need to make sure it performs if requested. Latest spec is twin 350 watt spot bulbs, designed to illuminate a person on the tracks 800 feet out. Wants 75v so fed it with a variac. I am looking for a second and some gauges / controls / horns if anybody has such laying around. ;)

Started a fire in the wood burner as the garage temp was 41 degrees when I came home this morning after 5 days at work. The bitter cold this week sucked the heat out of the garage. I suppose it didn't help that out of the last two weeks of this pay period, I've been at work for 11 of them.

I'd want to pull the pan just to make sure the pick up tube is not cracked.

In the Garage Shop today:

After the last few days of record low temps and record snowfall, it was nice to be able to wear a T-shirt today (54° clear and sunny). :)

I had some woodworking planed, but didn't want to be dealing with the sawdust. I decided to kill some time and do more metal-crafting.

If I'm going to continue doing this, I really need to invest in a TIG.

I dealt with all the saw dust on @GreenIron behalf...

Some lessons I learned here, the hard way of course. Served myself some humble pie, two forks and a double serving.

In my table, I used a piece of white oak that caused me some hassles. It cracked/ checked quite a bit. I should of tested it before I tried it. I used West System Epoxy to fill the cracks with dark brown/ black tint. It filled the cracks perfectly, the bad part was it bled into the areas around them into the end grain and remained like an ink spill around the cracks. The belt sander wouldn't take enough off to make it go away. I had an idea, built what I called an exoskeleton for the table to mount and run the router sled on. 4 - 2x4s planed and glued, through bolted like a camp resting on 2x4 legs clamped to the table legs. Worked better that I imagined. I over built it for heft and stability. Would be a great set up to restore an old worn one and will keep it in that need comes my way. It's 9-19 degrees here so I decided to give myself a swift kick to the balls and run it inside. No need for any of you to repeat that mistake of mine. I live by myself unsupervised.. Been vacuuming and dusting my living room for 2 days. While the errors humbled me plenty, the solution and outcome, minus the mess, I can once again hold my head up and look people in the eye again. All in all, learned a bunch and only lost about 3/16 off the top and overall thickness, fixed my errors with a mess to clean. Pictures no specific order

Big shot uses a $20 instead of a $1 bill.

Seriously, that's a very cool sculpture.

I think they are going to end up sending an adjuster out, probably write the thing off at this point since repairs will be more than its worth according to book value. Then again, they could be crazy enough to throw the cash at it. Who knows.

Got the Raised Bed Planter Box done and spotted too many flaws.
I will knock out a better one tomorrow and Sunday.
The first editions are always rough but with continuous improvement they will get better.
The first edition is “Good Enough” but it is not good enough to be proud of.

Regular visitors will remember the Soma sets I make:
1000001610.jpg
1000001613.jpg

Recently, at futilitycloset.com, I ran across a sort of precursor to that puzzle, a late 19th century cube puzzle called the Diabolical Cube.

It's like Soma, but with differently shaped pieces. Anyway I decided to make a couple of them. Here's the first:

1000002302.jpg
1000002301.jpg

As usual, this is made from jatoba flooring scraps with teak oil finish. I'm sending this one to the guy who does Futility Closet (we email regularly), and I'll keep the other for myself.

Also FYI A Prop heater will dump a LOY of humidity into the space.

Not today, but while waiting for the 56in tool cabinet to arrive.
Made the top from tractor trailer flooring. Only needed to cut 2 sides for final fit.

20250116_211817.jpg
20250116_211744.jpg
20250116_211800.jpg

USG 56in finally arrived and quickly realized it's kinda tall for a work surface. Adding 1 3/8in thick top didn't help. But those darn casters do not need to be that tall either.
20250114_204630.jpg

Swapped them out for the Heavy Duty used ones I had on a Vidmar cabinet (my old toolbox by the lift). Vidmar got the HFT casters. The lift table got some use unloading the 56in from a pickup and swapping casters. 56in is about 2in lower, even with the top. It's tolerable but not a workbench height.
20250116_211925.jpg
I'm liking the top. I've been eyeing a butcher block top for the box the wife got me for Christmas.
