I went with the " scary sharp" method for my wood chisels. I read about it and it seemed like an easy way to sharpen them. Got a 12x12 piece of float glass and bought a sandpaper kit from 80 grit to 3k. You basically just run through each grit on the glass and before you know it your chisels are mirror polished on the the back side and the cutting edge. I could shave my arms with them when they were done. I was pretty well impressed with that setup and cost about 20 dollars to build the setup.

Knives are tools so you can never have too many. I've managed to keep the kitchen set down to a reasonable size (the ones that go in the empty slots are in the sink to be hand washed). The rest of the house, not so much.

Seems a common tool to give out for company promotions in the oil field was pocket knives. My collection of knives was ridiculous, but when I cleaned my dad’s stuff out of the house I found he had two dresser drawers just full of pocket knives. I weeded out the good name brand knives out of the collection and then gave the rest of them to my cousins, and friends to use. Those knives were perfect for those moments you knew was going to break the blade but it was needed to be done. So, a lot of them went in friends toolboxes to use in the pasture for those moments.

I think I still have 50-60 pocket knives even though I carry a leatherman all the time as my primary knife. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Now as I stare at this I wonder about making a 3d printed insert to drop the grinder in there too and have everything in one spot....hum.....

So quick update...

I've had a week or so with the M12 right angle die grinder....yeah it's too handy to put away in a plastic organizer. Even just leaving a 120 grit disc on it the thing is handy, she doesn't get locked away where it takes extra time to retrieve. So that takes 1 thing off the list to design and print

Continuing with the reading in both of these books....too many things being added to mental to do list:

books.jpg

One on the right is Anarchists Design Book, wasn't sure what to expect but I'm really enjoying it:

I still don't have the front door camera mounted, it's staring at my on my desk right now and I need to modify a printed mount so it mounts plumb on the siding with the proper angle at the door....that's a project for this weekend.

But I shouldn't delay that project too long....as it was announced I'm leaving my current employer and starting a new job with one of the distributors in the market I live. So no more work from home most of the time...hence the desire for more cameras....so yeah.....lot to do!

Good news is....you can probably cut all year without needing to resharpen....bad news is resharpen day takes all day! Nice collection

I never saw a chiefs knife in person until my first job after college. All my parents had were serrated steak knives.

Did they just not cook much? Or cut everything up with steak knives?

We got a nice breadknife from the same Henckels set as a wedding shower or engagement gift and that opened my eyes to what non-crappy knives can do. The wedding registry then changed from a bigger knife set to the knives seen plus a smaller 3 or 4" paring knife. I've been doing more cutting up of larger cuts for vac sealing and tossing in the freezer so been looking at something more clever like....mostly cause it looks cool if I'm being honest. What I've got seems to be doing well so far

I think I still have 50-60 pocket knives even though I carry a leatherman all the time as my primary knife. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Glad my 10 or 12 knives is only a mild case of collection-itis! My daily right now seems to rotate between 2 different Benchmades though there is also a Leatherman, couple of swiss army, an old buck...that may be it that actually get carried.

Big changes! Good luck!

Thanks! Yeah....biggest change will be going to working/attending the office daily instead of from home. I've worked with the team for years so I know the players which makes that part easier, but I'll have more time out in the field at jobsites which will be nice to break up the day a bit. Probably 30-40% of the job is the same thing I do "today", just focused on this sales territories specific questions/needs instead of multiple territories.

I also get to join the cult of Apple (booo) as their work phones are all iPhones....but it also comes with a company truck and fuel card. I believe it's 2024 or 2025 Tacoma 4 door which is encouraged to go home with you and use locally, so that makes the 8 or 10 minute commute to work easier.

Not on today's bingo card

Charging system fault stranded the wife about 5 miles away this afternoon. New battery at least got it home, but warning wasn't going away, so volt meter comes out and battery is reading 10.5 volts with it running....

So out the alternator comes. Bearings feel/sound good so might just be the voltage regulator but I can't get one of those tomorrow...but i can get a complete reman alternator with the voltage regular at 9am when the store opens.....so it's ordered and I at least have a plan for the morning!

And done....for this round at least.

New battery probably wasn't necessary, however it was 3.5 yrs old and allowed me to get it home without a tow...so $215 on the battery was still cheaper then a tow for 5 miles and gives me future peace of mind. Hopefully the last battery I put in this thing.

While I was there, oil got changed as well as the remote filter access is impaired by the intake so with it gone it's super easy

20250209_105714.jpg

Overall, not a terrible service. Honestly it was easier and faster then the serpentine belt change which is just mind blowing to this farm kid who grew up working on engine bays I could stand in with the engine in them...but I also wouldn't want to daily drive those anymore so progess I guess

Hit the engine bay with some soap and water in spray bottles before closing it up...definitely not DFB level but it's cleaner than it was.

20250209_140703.jpg

What's your favorite underhood product for plastic/rubber and related? Using the same thing you use for interiors or do you reach for something else for engine bay?

Spot on Logan. My Camaro is currently in need of a new alternator. I have a new one sitting on the bench for the past week. But since I have another daily driver now I have been lazy to change it.

My go to under the hood is 303.

This is after cleaning and a quick wipe down with 303.

I use the blue bottle under the hood and the white bottle on exterior parts as it has a UV inhibitor.

You have a chance to play with that new minicomputer?
Reading the FUTO manifesto reinvigorated my interest in setting up a custom router and the ne of those seems like a good choice if I could find one with dual good gigabit NICs.

Thanks for joining!

The Dell is on a shelf in this rats nest...

Hardware wise it's working flawless. I need more time to play with the software, as haven't made it very far past the initial Home Assistant setup. Still have a few more devices/platforms to get integrated into it(Ecobee, Ubiquiti, Sense...something else) and want to get some new motion sensors figured out....but haven't made the time yet.

I've got an Ad blocker spun up on the Proxmox....but to be honest haven't gotten logged in to set it up....again more to do

I must admit.....I've only been in the brewery once and pretty sure I was in middle school so wasn't able to partake in the good stuff in the tasting room at the end! I was going to try and have a beer at the airport, but flight issues gave me about 10 minutes at the gate before I boarded so that didn't happen either. Guess I will have to make stopping there intentional on my next trip!

On the garage front....not much has happened there the last couple days

I did get the Volvo underside treated for winter by a local company a week or two ago...I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone in the area:

Top notch service, great communication, sent numerous pictures of the work and even gave me some options on some improvements they could offer for drying out a foam liner behind the front wheel well liners if they could have it overnight. Top notch and would recommend and will use again! In good news the Volvo is driving a bit smoother and a couple random engine area noises are gone, so the work in November wasn't for nothing. Going to try and change the oil this week then I can put the lower air spoiler/airdam/annoying cowl plastic shield back on.

On the house front, the transition of dumb switches to marginally intelligent and hackable wifi connected switches is maybe nearing a close. I've got most of the switches I wanted to swap over done for this first batch. Ended up installing (3) Lutron Caseta dimmer switches as they're the only ones I'm aware of that can do what I wanted without a neutral wire required as my 3 ways on the main level all brought power in at the switch and didn't run neutrals to a switch box. It's a bit spendier of a solution at about $75 per 3 way vs $30 for the Kasa switches but it's done and they're working. Now to figure out some of the schedules and automation/routines to incorporate which is why I wanted to do it in the first place. For example: automatically turning on the kitchen lights at a low brightness Oct thru March at 6:15 am so I'm not walking thru there in the dark

Did have to pull out the 3D printer to avoid a trip to the big box store for this mounting plate to mount the wireless "Pico Remote" for the Caseta switch which functions as your remote switch in 3/4/5 way etc configurations.

20241222_153342.jpg

Model link: https://www.printables.com/model/535606-lutron-caseta-pico-remote-wall-plate-bracket/comments

Printed on the A1, black PLA as it was loaded. 2 hour print time for the pair on a .2 nozzle with .14 layer height, about 30 grams of material in each so far cheaper than the $8 bucks each.

I'm currently looking at no "formal" work days this week between time off and holiday so going to try and make a bit of garage tool progress when I can. My brother picked up a fiber laser thru his side hustle biz and been sending pics which is making me get the itch to get my CO2 laser lens mirror/upgrade finished....then I've also got dust collection automation to start(buying components doesn't count as starting, some random projects out there to finish and a CNC frame which needs significant work to get it functioning....so I've got plenty I should be working on. Let's see if I can get 1 machine going...at least partly?
Oh man, I have been looking for a solution that does not require a neutral for our old apartment. This is perfect!

And now thinking if I should redo my house… I did not do my homework when selecting the smart switches and went with Treatlife system…not realizing the load on the network. This new house has neutral, so more options available…

Yup the Caseta Lutron work great for no neutral applications and the app is simple and easy to ise. Just make sure to grab the Caseta, at least big orange box has another Lutron model that requires a neutral and is right next to the Casetas and I accidentally picked them up one time.

Well between breaks of watching this horribly boring football game....
That game was one sided huh. I was leaning more toward the Eagles simply because of the Alabama players on the team. It was nice to see Jalen Hurts get a Super Bowl ring after his history of getting so close to winning a big game but ends up losing it, or being benched due to not able to make any play for the National Championship. Devonta making history for Alabama with his winning records.

I don't like the Eagle's organization, but I enjoy watching the players from the days of college to now in the NFL.

Only thing that had me rooting for the Chief was Patrick Mahomes being from Texas Tech University.

Not how I wanted a Monday morning to start....but it didn't ask me:

CEL.jpg

Pull out the basic code reader:

scanner.jpg

2014 Silverado with the 5.3L, this is apparently enough of a known issue a TSB was published:

As it involves pulling timing chain cover.....not looking forward to that and looking forward to paying someone else to do it even less. Some google searching found a couple reports of people whose trucks were running on the low side of engine temp (which mine is) and they got this, replaced the thermostat and this code went away. A new thermostat and coolant change was already on the to do list....now it's on the "today list" I think.

Bummer about the CEL 🙁. Never fun to have an unplanned forced repair, or diagnosis chasing. Hopefully that will solve it and it won't require a pile of parts to be thrown at it or worse yet someone else touching it 😬

Good luck!!

Thanks! I've got the workbench book in digital format and almost added the paper version on this last order but got the Design book instead as I hadn't read it....I do like the books in paper form enough the workbench book will get added on a future order for sure!

Yeah....I'm not overly surprised the Chiefs lost...they've been a slow starting team all year and the Eagles took advantage and jumped out to a big early lead and that was all she wrote. Would've appreciated a better game though to at least make more enjoyable watching.....oh well...onto next year!

Thermostat change probably gets started over lunch hour, see if I can get that done before Momma gets home...might have to get off work an hour early and make it up tonight. If I can limp it for a couple weeks (which seems viable based on online reports) it gets me to the new job which gets me a work truck and the pressure of being a single vehicle household if it's in pieces is loosened up a bit....or I could get a rental.

Might have to research into an actual scanner/diagnostic tool vs a simple code reader. Being able to command the solenoid to cycle and watch the resulting pressure change looks to be pretty valuable for troubleshooting this one

That's one thing that will be missed about the move. My buddy (as a diesel mechanic) had all the fancy MAC tools tablets and gadgets and it's amazing what those things can do. One time we went all the down into the radio setting to try and find out why my factory amp and sub was having issues. It's amazing that you can even diagnose and see electronic components that "small" in the grand scheme of things. This was all "canbus" stuff I believe, not a huge auto electronics guru so can't quote me there. It was more of a here son hold the flashlight situation 🤣

Logan, that was a fun moment. I clicked the link and the first car on the list was a Cadillac CTS-V. Really glad I have a pacemaker and then I noticed the years and mine is a 2011. I'm going to go lie down now.

A nap sounds wonderful! I've got the forbidden Kool-Aid draining in the garage so I should probably get back to work so I can go work on that later

And thanks to Bret @bj383ss a bottle of 303 came home with me from the lunch hour autoparts store run as I was waiting on my oil container to be drained....clever plan they've got there.

^303 works great when applied sparingly and buffed off with a clean microfiber. I use it on everything from plastic to rubber, and the only time it gives me any fuss is when I put it on too heavy and don't buff off after application.
