These guys have done pretty well for themselves...

@ctuai: That's a YOU **** find (and price), especially given the exterior condition! Hopefully the internals are just as good?

Mike

One sticky key. Took it apart, but I'd need to remove the rod that keeps the keys in and that looks like a bit too much effort.

Here's one of my favorite accordionist:

Though the Schmenge's are a close second.

You didn't bring home that sweet Harvest-Gold phone for the '60s-70's thread?
I’ve had the phone for a while, didn’t know about that thread
And now I can't find it, either....
Hmmm. There are no threads on the Vintage Tools Discussion forum dedicated to telephones, as a thing, and none dedicated to the 1960s and 70s, as an era. We have a Bell System thread, mainly tools, and mainly older than 60s/70s stuff, but occasionally going there, and occasionally featuring devices and instruments. I can't speak for any other GJ forums.

I had a pair of sans a belt polyester slacks back in the day.
Oh, heck yeah. Grant's specials! (Or was Grant's just a beast coast thing?)

I just wore a pair (plaid!) to my younger brother's surprise 60th birthday party a few years ago as part of a whole 70s period getup. Everything was bought at a flea market except for the suede chukka boots, which I still wear (some things never go out of style! :)) I got there about ten minutes before he and my SIL were due to arrive, upstairs at a joint in Phoenixville, PA, so all my extended family hushed and gathered for the big greeting, and nobody recognized me for like a solid minute. Lol

Walking Ghost today and a curbside find was a Klein Bag stick out of the trash container at the curb. Inside was a Dewalt Impact 20v, Milwaukee bit set, Ryobi drill and battery(not pictured) and a unmarked ballpeen hammer. The Dewalt battery charged fine ,haven't went downstairs to check the Ryobi yet but lights on charger were positive.

You ****!

I have zero interest in learning how to play one of those, but inherited two while cleaning out my parents' / grandparents' basement back in early 2020. Unfortunately, they were stored in a damp basement for decades and probably need a lot of reed / internal work, but I wasn't letting them go to the dumpster...

This one was supposed to have belonged to my Irish grandfather (my mother's father), who had an Irish band and made good money in the 60s through 80s playing in places like Newport, RI and Fall River, MA. He passed away in the 80s when I was around 13, so I never got to see his band play (and really only heard my mother mention fiddle, clarinet, sax, flute and organ specifically, but she said he could play any instrument). It's clear that it was heavily used. The storage case is also in rough shape:

This one was supposed to have belonged to my grandmother (my mother's mother), but I don't remember her ever talking about it, and don't remember her taking it out to play it. It's in much better physical shape (externally), although the outside of the storage case is also toast:

I'd like to get one (or both) fully restored. When I looked into (online) a few years ago, it seemed like the only option was to ship them away to be fixed, and it probably wouldn't make much sense financially. Obviously, that's not why I'd fix them up, of course.

I just paid $30 (sellers asking price) for two boxes (one SAE and the other metric) filled to the brim with vintage wrenches. They were listed for about an hour and the seller said no holds so I took the gamble and drove 30-40 minutes despite nasty winter conditions. I still can't believe my luck. The Craftsman Professional polished stubby wrenches go for something like $20 a piece and I have 14 not to mention all the other gems.

AMAZING DEAL !!!!!

I couldn’t accurately count all of your new wrenches but it looks like you paid about 10 cents per wrench. 😱
Gotta be about 150 wrenches total so 20 cents a wrench. There are some Taiwan and Japan wrenches but overwhelming majority are US made.

What a score! Congrats again. 🍻

What, may I ask, are your plans for your nearly 100 pounds of assorted wrenches?

More than a few fellow GJ members find hoards like that, organize them into complete sets and incomplete sets, and then spend lots of time finding the missing bits to make complete sets.

I have some oddballs available for filling in. You could eventually post a list of what you need and also what you would be willing to part with.

JMP, those S-K wrenches aren't too common. They sure have the Lectrolite look. What a haul.

I'd say you are correct! From a member of an SK collectors group on Facebook:

Thomas Fusco
"Yes, although not with the SK name. These are the Lectrolite TruFit design. Lectrolite also made these for Sears under the Dunlap (1950s) and SEARS (late 1950s to 1963) brand names, as well as a no-name version sold by hardware/auto parts stores. These were made in the Lectrolite Defiance OH plant. Symington Wayne acquired both SK and Lectrolie in 1962, so these were probably made shortly thereafter, perhaps 1963-65. The design was discontinued not too long after the acquisition. Hope this helps."

Either way, hard to believe the free or nearly free finds! Who does that?

I know, right? Just the other night I was thinking it that I need to find a few missing wrenches in a set and somehow this and other things have ended up being fulfilled in ways I could never expect.

This was the photo in the listing for the metric wrenches at $15. Tiny resolution but I was able to make out a single Snap On wrench so at that point I knew it was going to be worthwhile. The seller was an older man with a big house, nice garage and a huge tool box. I assume these wrenches might have been the extras or was just cleaning the box out but I didn't ask.

I haven't fully decided quite yet and probably should start letting some things go. I am trying to complete some Craftsman sets and this helps a ton. I also collect certain tool names. The best stuff I keep but a lot of extras and non-collectable tools and foreign tools I make a pile and once I have a bunch I will donate to Habitat Restore which also gives me an excuse to hunt for any interesting tools. Besides collecting I do use my tools or planning to use. It's a bit of head start prior to attending a local aviation trade school. The metric is of no use there but my vehicle is metric but realistically it doesn't take much tool wise to work on.

Also I am finding that collecting tools can easily become more expensive than an initial investment, especially when just buying a single wrench might cost more than what you have into the rest of a set and of course shipping doesn't help matters. The same goes with restoring old tools and machinery where you end up buying more tools to aid in the repair or restoration. Let's see the Craftsman wrenches I will combine with the rest of my Craftsman wrenches and see where I'm at. I'll definitely have some extras there while always missing something...

Normally any S-K Wayne tools made after 1964 were marked S-K Wayne. Between 1962 and 1964 they were still marked S-K at least that is my experience.

***** to ctuai and JMP! Great hauls!

Hit a couple pro run estate sales and one private "estate sale". Glad I went to the private one first as there were a bunch of decent randoms and I got it cheap. Both of the pro run sales I grabbed a decent pile and left stuff behind because they wanted too much for it (nothing was priced). Good to get out though, decent tool sales have been few and far between since the beginning of the year.

First pro run sale, partially complete Circle U 1/2 inch set for 10 bucks. Of course it's missing the 11/16 as is my other partial set. If anyone has a spare let me know! The C series was a nice bonus too:deathmeta

IMG_7450.jpg

Second pro run sale, had a decent pile and they wanted crazy money for it so I put almost all of it back. Needed the 1/2 SK extension and don't see much Wright metric so I paid $4 for em. The breaker t is a mystery but figured it might fit something I have laying around.

IMG_7451.jpg

Last the private sale. Whole bunch of randoms for 5 bucks. Just how I like it:ROFLMAO:

Craftsman up top, from left Thorsen, Proto, SK, Snap on. A few randoms also mixed it there.
