And I missed a lot the past few days. ***** to the following esteemed individuals:
machinists chest in the corner of one. No worries, because as soon as I saw it and the price they were asking, I pulled the tag, shut the drawers on it, and went to pay. And they immediately asked "what would you offer?" So, I dropped the price down 20%, they accepted, and I was out the door.
Nice grab!
some Proto, some Snap-on, some Craftsman, a lot of ****, and the hat from a bait store. Not bad for $40.
Wow, not bad indeed
3 estate sales total 102.00

Bunch of Craftsman, a Proto screwdriver, some old lock cylinders, a Lakeside wrench, Channellock 420s. Part of the fun was digging through the imported junk to find the good stuff :)

This popped on FBMP about 7-8 min away, so dropped by and grabbed it. Outside seems re-painted, has an extra latch on the front and missing the handle. But it has the cover, and hard to go wrong @ $10!
Lucky
But also picked up this first model Workmate for $25
No decent Workmates around here under $40.
Picked all this stuff up for 'Free' yesterday at an estate sale in my HOA.
Free? Hope the HOA dues are worth it!
I don't usually spend time looking at the classified here at GJ, but for whatever reason I was, and saw a listing
Nice!

They're both Acme Thunderer's. I especially like that they have their original lanyards attached.

I‘ve had a few issued over the years when I did dirty trackside jobs, probably from 1996 to 2005 as part of my “Look out” kit on the UK railway @ railroad. Some bakelite, some plastic, you know storeman always give you the old stuff first!

A PICOW (Person In Charge Of Work) latterly COSS (Controller Of Site Safety) would place the ”Look out” to look for trains whilst the gang worked on the track.

The whistle was to alert staff in touching distance, the horn to alert from a few hundred yards away, the horn sounds like a really loud kazoo. We also used the whistles in for platform despatch staff too.

IMG_1023.jpeg

Thread drift: The Torch pictured will have red and green lenses to act as a signal in certain situation. The older cast alloy ones are called “Bardic lamps” and have a nob to switch between lenses.

I cleaned out the Gold Flag Stanley Vidmar yesterday. A lot of stuff I threw out or put in scrap metal bucket. Filled 2 HDX 27 gallon totes with the wire rolls, it's mostly "house wire". Found 5 military adjustable chain tie downs, I used to use these as a Crew Chief on KC-135's many years ago. The axe head looks good but so much tape gunk on it I don't know what brand it is yet. The paint gun and bucket is DeVilbiss. The Makita band saw works but the blade is not tracking right. I might keep this bin for a while to store garage sale stuff.

No pics today, but I stopped at a flea market, and I got:

-An electrical lockout/tagout lock
-A 5lb box of drywall screws
-A NOS Water filter housing and extra filters
-A NOS outdoor watertight outlet housing
-2 NOS homeline 20a breakers

All for $5. Nothing earth-shattering, but it's all stuff I need.

Sunday I hit the monthly flea market early. I was probably on the way home when bmw got there. I didn't haggle over anything, just paid the asking price. I did ask for a lump sum price if I had a whole handful of tools, and the sellers were quite reasonable pricing that way.

Spoke with my boss and our "liquidator" (coworker who arranges donations, recycling, etc.) today. Working on arranging to snag a bunch of metal bookshelves when we do our next purge.

I'm trying to also clean out the Facilities shop, but I need to be careful not to be too greedy, LOL. We don't have extensive tools (and anything resembling a full set has been decimated long ago), but there are some nice tool and parts storage units.

My rule: Don't throw ANYTHING away without asking me first! I actually save them money by taking the stuff. Otherwise, they're paying for a dumpster or moving truck.

So yesterday I cleaned out the blue Stanley Vidmar. Lots of stuff got trashed from this one. It had a lot of stuff for RV trailer repair from years ago. RV rubber propane hoses are supposed to be changed every 5 years, new hoses in the package dated 2010 and earlier, in the trash they went. Replacement overhead 12 volt lights, everyone uses LED replacements these days, trashed. But one good thing was this RV power cord in the box. So many times I opened a box like this and it was empty or full of junk. This one indeed had a nice new cord! I also found a new way to get rid of duct tape residue. The axe head I got out of the Gold Flag box was full of residue, the photo here was the "good" side LOL. There are a lot of ways to clean off the residue, I was going to try denatured alcohol but it evaporates so fast. Then I spied the hand sanitizer by the sink, 75% alcohol! So I smeared the hand gel on the one side and ate a quick lunch. Came back and the residue could easily be scraped with a thumbnail. Put more hand gel on it and smeared it around and then just wiped it off with a paper towel. Easy peasy!

P.S. the axe head is a 3 1/2 pound Mann. It had MWR F1 etched on it (Morale, Welfare and Recreation program in the military) and was for rental use. I found an old MWR Rental price sheet in the blue cabinet and an axe was $3 a day or $15 a week to rent.

That Ranger AT-46 hook spanner is for the packing nuts on the vertical drive shaft housing of the overhead camshaft drive of the 6-440 (military L-440) series Fairchild Ranger aircraft engines used in training planes during WWII.

Nice picks. I'll give you a **** for broad-spectrum collecting!

Thanks for the info. I’ve seen the wrench for sale online before, and that’s about it. It came from Jim, one of our tool forum brethren. I seem to remember all of us gathered around in front of his tables a few years ago. I had only glanced at the wrench and knew it was Plomb, but then he pointed it out as we were talking and it got my interest. I told him it was a “power of suggestion” purchase. :)

What is going on with the handle on that Parmelee?! I have been fortunate enough to find two of them in the wild, a 1/2" version of his first patent (590,853 / March 6, 1888), when he was still making a go of it himself, with a sort of triangular shaped handle, where the grip was maintained by keeping pressure on the pipe and a cam, and a 3/4" version of his fourth and last patent (871,436 / Nov 19, 1907), when he was licensing the design and name to Walworth, with a sort of rounded handle and the grip could be secured with a screw-down collar.

I have never seen one like yours. It almost looks like a pipe was slipped over the handle. Or is that factory? What is that slot with the screw head sticking out? Does that sheath turn and lock in to place there?!

EDIT: I think I answered my own questions, which is throwing the exact ID of my bigger one into question. That locking mechanism on yours is exactly what is shown on his fourth patent. Mine now appears to be some version of the third that is not well represented by the third patent.

Post more down on the 'Pipe Wrenches' thread when you get a chance. (There're a few on that thread besides mine...)

After only one unproductive trip to the flea market this year, and damn few yard or estate sales, I bid on an online estate auction and won some stuff.

1741369655737.png

Half a Craftsman 1/4" "V" socket set, some craftsman punches and made in USA wrenches, two small chisels and a brad awl, cool old tire gauge and an inflator, 8" crescent, Bernard pliers, pincers, fuller pliers, crappy task force sockets, cool old weight, sparta 1/4 breaker bar, and husky 1/4" ratchet.

1741366549591.png

Rocket Combination Square (but the head looks like a pot metal union), nail set, 3 Dunlap chisels, Can't read the marking on the fourth shorty, then 9 longer handleless chisels (six Stanley Everlasting, one unreadable, one Witherby, one "??? New York"), one more Witherby with a handle and a GI Mix too, underline C Craftsman double boxed wrench (9/16s x 1/2), and a big old key.

The Stanley Everlasting Chisels are mostly sweetheart era. Replacing the wooden handles without cutting the shaft is basically impossible. I'm thinking about the possibility of some kind of plastic or epoxy. They made ones with black plastic later. That clear red plastic Millers Falls used to use would look cool. But the whole idea may not be practical for some $5-10 chisels.

1741367504043.png

Three woodies. Two are rounds. Picture of the third profile below. Unmarked wooden spokeshave, Irwin bits, Stanley three patent date 4C (type 12? I don't care and just glanced at the type study for this post), adjustable handle drawknife, two bladed Stanley spokeshave.

1741367668402.png
Cyma Reversa?

1741367903226.png

2" level. It needs a vial, which I think I have, but do I have the motivation? Grace screwdrivers. Now I can compare my hand filed screwdrivers with pro versions and check my technique. Pipe thread taps, which I'm not sure are sharp enough to bother with. The box held the biggest tap. Lastly, a Hanson tap and die set in quite good condition.

Not shown. Three organizers and a whole lot of nails and screws, many in original packaging.

I think the guys who did the research to create the type studies and help people date their planes did a service. But a lot of guys get way too focused on the issue. Lets not forget that the original reason for the types was largely to describe tools for sale before the dealers could easily use photography for such things.

Tuesday we went out of town antiqueing and thrifting, The family found some smalls to bring home, I found 2 tools at the thrift and left $2 for them:

Nail pulling pincers, no markings, and a Penens DOE - this is the size/length or smaller I need to fit in a mil spec lantern's parts well up to 2 that fir plus one I will modify for length as one end is broken. - so a possible use for broken wrenches if the size is suitable

Ant-THrift-Pincers-Penenes.jpg

An ES today: not a lot - Wall anchors. 7RW Peterson Vise Grips, Craftsman tappet with 3/4" and 7/8, and a 3 ft tape:

tar-flag-wall-anchors-7-RW-VGs-CM-tappet-3-ft-tape.jpg

Estate sale ($30): Case of ginger ale; Pair of Simonds files: Buffalo wedges; Pack of Archer certified aircraft oil pencils; 6 - cord organizers; Frogtape; Craftsman DD 4221 push drill; Starrett Center Gage no. C391, Screw pitch gage no. 472, T-Handle tap wrench no. 93A, Drive pin punches No. S 565; Kleen Kutter screwdriver; Dem-Bart Co. Checkering tool cutters 3-18, 4-18, C-1 and S-1 cutter reversed, and 3 extra cutters (S-1, C-1, 4-18); Veritas Burnisher; Lakeside 10" draw knife.

Nice to see the Starrett gear. Oddly enough a couple of month ago I was thinking of getting some checkering cutters and voila, here they are. The 3-18 & 4-18 are the left and right spacers @ 18 lines/in. The C-1 deepens the groove. The S-1 is also a groover, but cuts on the pull and is half the length for tight corners and finishing lines. I'll have to give them a whirl to see what they're all about. The Archer aircraft oil promo pencils are neat. They had two full cans of oil, but wanted $60 a can, which was a hard pass, especially as the pencils were basically free.

@ctuai ***** for the Starett stuff. I've found a few of those pencils as well, kinda cool. Yeah too much for the full Archer cans but people can put whatever on stuff they want.

One surplus sleeping bag and 3 half pup tents, $25 for all. The echo was $5.

The last few weeks restore finds:
Never seen anything marked Craftsman Commercial so I had to buy it!
The hammer in the second pic also from the restore, everything else was 15 bucks at an estate sale. Some nice old Lufkin and Starrett items, brand new Wiss snips, both screwdriver/nutdrivers are unmarked.
