I'm looking for a woodworking forum similar to this one. Preferably with a large and active membership similar to this forum, and hopefully with the vBulletin formatting. :pimpflash

Does anybody have a lead, know of, or frequent a forum as good as this one that is geared toward woodworking? :dunno:

I would take what you read on SawMillCreek with a grain of salt

They have a habit of deleting threads with any negative comments, so mostly what you read are 'glowing reviews'

I have been a member there for several years and never really noticed any such behavior. I like SMC and LumberJocks. LJ tends to have a lower signal to noise ratio, but lots of great projects.

Here is but one example. Be sure to read post #7 - it is from the forum owner

Does anyone remember usenet group "rec.woodworking"? Those were the days....

Then google bought up usenet and shut it down so they could force ads on us.

Which of these sites would you think be the best to identify an 1800's wood lathe by pictures? Lathe has no markings.

Reviving an old thread (came across it in a Google search) to see if there have been any changes of opinion about the sites mentioned above or about woodworking sites in general.

I'm looking to join a general woodworking forum. I'm a member of routerforums.com, but it's really mostly for routers and CNC. I get a few replies to my queries, but not much. I mainly joined it when I was looking for a new router. I joined craftisian.com but find the interface and navigation odd and not helpful.

I've narrowed it down to lumberjocks.com and woodworkingtalk.com. Anyone know the difference? I heard there was some drama on the LJ site, so a bunch of folks left and started craftisian. I think LJ is also a sister site to RF.

I'm a former woodshop teacher (taught grades 7-12 for 4 years). I've got all the toys in my garage: TS, jointer, DP, portable planer, etc. I'm looking for a site that is active with a general woodworking focus on all aspects (materials, tools, finishes, etc.) aimed at a serious DIY'er.

Any updated thoughts and comments?

I am on WWT periodically, there are a ton of beginner questions and issues, some good knowledge there, but it seems many threads devolve into old men arguing. I may get on LJ and see what it is like.

Yeah, that's what I want to avoid: a buncha old farts arguing about nothing! Ha!

I want to be able to ask a mix of beginner and advanced questions, and see answers to the same. I think an active, larger general forum will have a good mix.

You might give it a try, I have honestly stepped away from it a couple of times due to some of the same people doing the same thing over and over. You have the one that answers every question and makes the point over and over, then the one that was in the business for 30 years and knows the only way to do things. Then some really sharp folks that chime in occasionally. I learned a couple of tips years ago, but really haven't gleaned any good info there is some time.

I've struggled with woodworking sites. I've tried a few and Woodworking talk is where I've settled.

Nothing really wrong with Lumberjocks or Sawmill creek but neither really clicked for me.

Partly my issue is where I'm at with woodworking. I've been doing it a long time, but also don't do anything particularly fancy.

Just a thought. Why not start a thread on woodworking here?
Lot of people here are accomplished woodworkers.

I started one on cooking and it took off.

I liked it when I was on it. It was well moderated.

I joined the local Wood Worker Guild. Most are into the finer arts of wood working. When it said what are you most interested in, I'm interested in most facets at hobby level. I really didn't check off any of the boxes. If one said funky/barn board that one I would have checked off.

Not on your list, but Sawmillcreek.org is pretty active and well moderated. The real name requirement puts some people off, but it also keeps people accountable. I don’t do much woodworking these days, but I’ve been a paid member there for over ten years.

I considered it, but it seems it's aimed at pros who own a mill and not a general hobbyist like myself. I think you have to pay to see any photos, too.

I thought of that. I think I want something that has multiple threads/posts to make it easy to search and that is specific to woodworking because this site is very general (a good thing). Then again, this site does have lots of knowledgeable people on it. I may just post my questions here. Maybe the moderator (@Ryan ) can make a woodworking section?

You situation sounds similar to mine. What's your username over there? (If you don't mind my asking) Maybe I'll join and check it out.

I took a look at it. I initially thought it was a paid site for the magazine of the same name. I'll take a second look and maybe lurk for awhile and see if it would suit my needs.

I've been around most of the woodworking forums for years. I was even the moderator for the Wood Magazine hand tool forum for several years. There are all kinds of woodworking and all kinds of woodworkers. Some guys are hand tool only, some are hand tool plus power. Some work only sheet goods and want a pocket hole jig and a track saw. Others work mostly hardwoods and need a planer, jointer, table saw, bandsaw, etc. The OWWM guys want everything US or European made and over 25 years old. Many of the forums are dominated by one type or another. Some even forbid discussions that fall outside their interest area. Many of the younger folks want to discuss the current crop of Asian built machines available at the box stores. Some of us collect vintage hand tools or vintage machinery. I collect and use both. I attended the Colonial Williamsburg "Working Wood in the 18th Century Conference" in 2005. Very interesting how efficient you can be with hand tools when you know what you're doing and how to tune them. It was sponsored by Society of American Period Furniture Makers. Very serious woodworkers. They have a great forum if you are into hand tools and early American furniture.
Ryan, count me in on woodworking whatever form it takes.

I thought there is a wood working thread somewhere.

I am more of a noob when it comes to woodworking but would appreciate a more dedicated corner for that here too.

Same as here.

I got a similar impression from Saw Mill Creek. Posters were nice enough, but definately got the vibe it was more of a pros / high end hobbyist forum.

WWT isn't as busy but feels more general hobbyist oriented. Now there are some posters posting very nice work, but also very open to basic newbie questions.

Posters asking about budget or high end tool options mostly get real use reviews not too much editorializing although as with anywhere there is the usual Harbor Freight vs Festool fanboyism/ haters.

I've been following an in progress thread for a really nice toy wooden car project that started in December or January.

I wonder if it changed over the years, I used to be on sawmill all the time when I did woodworking, I had a cnc, not a huge one though but I still would make all kinds of things and sell them in my wife’s beauty shop.

Not at all negative towards Sawmill, just not really what I was looking for.
