I have a 6 week old concrete slab (4" thick, 3500 PSI, fiber and wire mesh reinforced). I recently dropped a pair of vice grips from about 7 feet up and chipped the crete. I was a little miffed and didn't think it should chip quite that easily. Am I being a little paranoid or is this something to be concerned about? What about an epoxy coating to protect the floor?

If you drop tools on a nice floor, especially a new one, it will chip. It's some sort of law.

Epoxy will not prevent this.

If it is a thin big box store floor then it will most likely chip. If it is a floor done right, it will hold up to that type of abuse. A good floor will increase the strength of most concrete.

Thin - A floor done with waterbased epoxy or any floor with a single coat.

Floor done right - see "The truth about epoxies"

A floor that is only a few mils thick will most likely not hold up well. A floor that is 20 mills thick will hold up much better to the abuse in a working shop.

He chipped the "crete". No epoxy applied. From 7 feet up with a tool that can have aggresive corners on impact depending on how it hits. I say chipping can happen.

You are correct RPH. that will happen. I was answering his question if epoxy would help protect against that.
