I spotted a sale less than 10 minutes from home. We waited till an hour after opening as this sale company usually has long lines. The lines were gone by the time we arrived and we said hi to a guy I knew from back in my working days. He had bought vintage stereo components and left the tools to me. There was quite a large pile of wrenches, and quite of few of them were Plombpire Vlchek almost all of which I left behind. Here is what we brought home. Quite a few various Lectrolite wrenches, a few Cal-Van flare nut wrenches, a P&C and Thorsen combo. Several Craftsman tools and an obligatory Barcalo DOE.

Did it come with instructions? If not, take the little cap off the top of the regulator. There's usually a little doohickey under the cap that is NG on one side and LPG on the other. Be sure the LPG (or propane) side is up.

I got a similar deal a few years back. I'd been searching for a simple, no-electricity gas range under 27" wide to fit in my little cabin, with little to no luck. Then an acquaintance turned me onto to a deal--a wealthy home owner he was doing a remodel for had ordered just what I wanted--26" wide, 4 burner top, oven--and he wanted it gone. It was too small --just haul it off. It was still in the box, and easily converted from NG to LPG and back.
Yeah, I haven't read the instructions too thoroughly, but they are included. It looks like I have to change the orifices in the burners (included) flip the thing in the regulator, and adjust the oven burner. Not too complicated.

Not many sales around her yet this year. Today I had to run the 4 miles into town for some lumber to finish a project. On the way home I noticed a sign for an estate sale that hadn't been advertised. It was at the end of a long, winding rural driveway and it was raining hard. Almost random items in a garage/workshop, mostly woodworking and home repair. I found a few things and spent $8.00.

Here's my largest "left-behind" today:

54415507837_df549e13a5_b.jpg

If I put that in my shop, I'd have to move everything else to a new shop.

Wow! That looks like a VERY early Lodge & Shipley, in very good condition. I hope someone saves that!

Maybe I'll drop back in tomorrow and offer $40. I'm not sure how to fit it in the Corolla, but it is fifty yards from my cabin. Not that I have a shop at my cabin....

I have more pictures if you want to see them. Note: I forgot to buy coffee yesterday and was uncaffinated when I left home and saw this sale. I was not on top of my game.

For those who don't venture too far from this thread, here's that 1920's era S.J. Cox "HOLDFAST" I found yesterday, all prettied up, shown together with one I found and reported back in 2022 in the 10th annual GS thread. More photos and info in the 'Screwholders' thread, here.

First sale of the year on a beautiful Saturday morning in NY. Advertised as "tons of tools"," there were a few buckets of mostly Chinese junk. Then I turned around and saw this monster sitting on the table. A Yost 32C. I asked the man how much and I patiently waited for the kick in the nuts price as he hemmed and hawed. He said " uhh...$40? I tried to hide my excitement as I turned the handle and noticed the jaw wasn't moving. He said "oh **** it doesn't work? Uh...how about $30?" I said perhaps and went back to the buckets to grab a few items. In my mind the price was great regardless even at $40 so I figured I'd throw in a few things I didn't really need or want to sweeten the deal. I handed him $30 and deadlifted the monster vise into my vehicle. It appears that the collar just on the other side of the main screw inside the dynamic jaw is broken. Hopefully that's the only issue and I can find a replacement.it also appears to have been painted black but I'm not vise expert so I turn to the GJ experts.

Yes it's the broken collar just inside the dynamic jaw as seen from the bottom. No clue if it's an easy fix or not. Not sure if that's the only issue or if that part is available. I'll have to consult with the experts on the Vise thread.

Small haul from my regular Habitat stop on my route. Tools are routinely overpriced there. I was able to find a few interesting things cheap to make the trip a good one.

-The 1/2” drive socket was completely black with grease. Looked like a cad plated something. Scratched the grease to reveal a couple lines so thought possible Snappy or perhaps old Truth. Cleaning revealed it was a 7/16 Snap-On with a nice logo and dual date stamp, 1930/31!

-nice pocket clip Stinxcelite (Xcelite) screwdriver. Yes it smells. ;)

-The knife looking item looked interesting. When I saw the logo and the fact it was 99 cents, it was a no brainer.
USMC (United Shoe Machinery Corp.) tack puller. I’ll admit, not sure what the side does.

MrsLS&I ventured into the Supergigantic Yard Sale ($5ea admission); I picked up a Stanley No36 plumb/level, Alva M Colt 8Feb1881 patent No1 quick clamp, Utica No31 pliers, Japan 90° needlenose, and Bonney ash tray, for $38 more. Prices were high, for my tastes.
Then local diner for breakfast.
I am looking forward to next weekend, when Jake’s Flea opens for the season, though rain is predicted. Then Apr25&26, for the Cetronia community yard sale.

YOU ****!!!

You're definitely on the right path, check with the vise thread. There's also a vise-parts thread, worth a shot.

Worst-case, patience and ebay will eventually get your parts. I inherited a vise, needed a swivel base. After a few years, I found a whole vise, with the swivel, for cheap money and bought that. Obviously, I'm not suggesting you do that (I only did for the sentimental value of my grandfather's vise), but that's just an example. You could also part that one out and make more than you paid (or buy another one with a different broken part, etc.).

Of course, buying a brand new replacement part would be the easiest and fastest way to go!

Good luck, please follow up after you get it finished!!!

Well, I couldn't help myself. I refilled the foldin' money in my wallet and went back to the right-across-the-street-from-home garage/shop sale at 8:30 this morning to see if there was anything new or if the folks running the sale were willin' to come down on a couple of items.

Yesterday's beautiful weather has changed to 35F and just about snowing and NO ONE else was there!

My $40 haul for today:

54417840673_3db5bdfef3_b.jpg

A Cleveland USA Columbian D44 M3 in good condition, complete w/shop-made aluminum jaw covers. A "broken" Glendale CA USA Cardinal speed DP vise ("Oh, honey, that thing is broken--you sure you want it?"). Little Prat and Goodell dividers, LS Starrett depth gauge, aluminum 35mm film can, spray bottle and full can of Kano Aero Kroil (!), 30mm ammo can and Woodward tool light.

I think I did OK. The Columbian was $40 yesterday, I got 'em down to $25 today--but had to remove it from the bench myself.

Here are the vises:

54417979455_b2211ab5fa_b.jpg

54417979460_5770db30e3_b.jpg

54417785404_5c8f1530fb_b.jpg

It's been used but not abused too much. I think that one screw is the only missing part. It also appears to be the original paint, in fair to good condition.

The "broken" DP vise:

54417979495_6ac1f1ce3e_b.jpg

54417785389_478bb826f0_b.jpg

The little Starrett depth gauge is just too damned purty to leave out:

54417840678_b509ec77b3_b.jpg

54416725802_f40c91ef51_b.jpg

The color-case-hardened head (anvil?) should clean up nicely.

Now I've got to go figure out why the evaporator fans on our kitchen freezer died last night, then get to cleaning tools....

Oh, yeah, left behind: The Lodge and Shipley lathe, complete with racks full of tooling and a half-dozen chucks (at least) is still there--asking $1,500 if anyone's interested (I have a contact #). The bench I took the Columbian vise off of... very hard to walk away from that. No pic, as it would just torture me.... The ten-foot top is 1 1/2" laid-up rock maple set on three metal cabinets... $250. I'm struggling to figure out where I could shoe-horn that beast into the shop!

When we were out running some Friday errands we came across two garage sales, which was surprising as they usually don't start around here until May. I spent $5 total--small Plews oil can, 10 feet of quarter inch soft copper and 2 small Craftsman spring clamps. Not much but good for this time of year here.

Weird, and for the most part slow day today. one item at the first stop ZERO at a (different than the usual monthly) HS Flea market - and that started strange as a "parking lot attendant" tried to get me to move my car 'because we are trying to line them up" - Excuse me? it a marked space parking lot and it's a flea market, not a concert where they are trying to line them up tightly in dirt/grass fields. I told her no, it's a parking lot; people will figure it out.

The first stop: A primitive fly fishing reel:

A1-Fly-reel.jpg

The next sale should have been a good one, lots of tools quite a bit of SO and other truck tools but thrashed to death mostly.
I was about to leave my third stop empty handed and saw an old Plvmb tool box. not a dream box, but after looking it over and asking for the price; I offered $15 and it was accepted. He even cleaned out most of the **** inside.

I have another the same size, (Approx 24 X 12-3/4, X 11) and from two, I should be able to get one good one together with parts left over. My old one is missing the cantilever tray...

Old one is OD green this one seems to be red originally.

B1-Plvmb-box-l1.jpg

B1-Plvmb-box-l2.jpg

B1-Plvmb-box-l3.jpg

While trying to get to the last 2 stops, I hit a TOO:

Mostly supplies, but for $5 al a good deal. 2 rolls of sandpaper strips, a sanding block, packs of NOS bi-metalic blades, a US/American lock, brass 1/4" pipe Tee and a brass 1/4" rod 3 ft long, and a set of 5/6-18 taps. taps

-strips-block-bi-met-blades-US-lock-B-Tee-rod-taps.jpg

My final bit of weirdness was I got to an estate sale 10 min before opening, signed in as #11, waited ten min - than another 15 as the woman ruining it was late, and that was a total bust, so I wasted close to an hour for nothing.

Here's the workbench that I left behind--for now:

54418186094_fe9a28afd8_b.jpg

54418239553_192c590032_b.jpg

The top is all solid wood, but it looks like the maple is only about 3/4" thick, with maybe fir for the mass of it. Still, at 2"+, it's hefty. 100" X 25". The metal bracket on the front left corner is where the Columbian vise was mounted. The cabinets are part of the deal.

Asking $250--I might go for it--if I can make room.

We're looking into getting a smaller boiler for the brewery and locating it outside the shop, which would give me a place for this in what would become my new office. A little clean-up and it'd make a hell of an office desk.!

Not technically a garage sale score...but today's pawn shop haul

  • SnapOn F80 3/8 ratchet
  • SnapOn deep swivel impact sockets in 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, and 3/4
  • Armstrong 12-972 1/2 ratchet
  • DeWalt DCF809 20v Atomic Impact Driver
$130 all in, out the door. Not my best haul, but not bad for an unintended stop. Ratchets were nasty, but in good shape. I have already broken the F80 down, soaked it, cleaned it, Superlubed it, and its as smooth as butter. I will piddle with the Armstrong later this evening.

Long time lurker, first time poster. So, first of all thank you for all the knowledge shared by this group. If not for that knowledge, I'd have no idea what I was looking at.

I went to my local Restore for the second time ever and spent a few minutes poking through the screwdriver and wrench bins.

Spotted three "screw drivers' with wood handles. Three Spintite nut drivers. I left behind the third smaller one that had it's handle glued on and a bent shaft.

There was a nice selection of wrenches -VLchek, SK, Pennens, Indestro, Barcalo, & Bonney.

Wrenches and nut drivers were $1.50 each, with everything half price through next week, so out the door at $9.70.

Seems to have been driver day for me, today, but that is OK.

It has been dead, dead, dead for tools and other sales around here lately, so I headed down to the second largest city in the state, just 35-40 minutes south of me. Stopped first at an Elks Club flea, finding the K&E, Stanly radio driver, and Vlchek woodie. Next, off to a sale in the sticks, run by a charity for single parents. Nothing there, but I donated $5. After that a nice thrift store were I picked up a book, and then off to a used tool shop, were I picked up the socket tray and an interesting screw starter. Then Restore down there, were I found the Plomb pebble driver, Bridgeport nut driver and the largest bee hive driver I have seen. $13 for all of that.

Oh, the book:

Last year at the PIR swap meet here in Portland , which is the largest swap this side of the Mississippi, I found a vendor selling 2 Proto MFD tool panels at very reasonable price. I quickly pulled out my cash to pay the seller. He was an old timer and had a bunch of early Ford parts and the tool boards. Somehow we got on the subject of the tool panels and I asked him if he had any more tool panels at home. I always ask vendors if they have more of whatever they are selling but most of the time they say no...but this time it paid off, and in a big way.

Vendor said he happened to be contemplating selling some of his Plomb tool panels but he wasn't sure when. He said to take his info and call him in a few months. I tried him every few months but every time I called him, he didn't answer and his voicemail wasn't set up. He's about 80 years old and isn't very tech savvy. On a hunch this past Thursday, I decided to give him another ring. Much to my excitement he actually answered and he also remembered me. I am so glad he answered because I was worried he would bring the Plomb panels to the swap meet and sell them and I would have missed an opportunity to get some uncommon Plomb pieces that I had been chasing for a year. The swap meet is coming up next weekend so I definitely was feeling the pressure.

The seller said he had the panels and was actually ready to sell them now as he had purchased a blast cabinet that was going to cover the panels and he wanted to see them go to a good home. Much to my excitement he said he lives in the town next to where I work and we made arrangements for me to come over on Friday (yesterday) to look at the panels. I went to his house and he showed me the panels and I made a deal on the 3 panels and the proto la sign as well. I'm really excited to get these panels. The 2 plumbs are ww2 era and are 1/2 drive tools board including sockets, ratchets and extensions. The other panel is for lady foot pry bars, dbe wrenches and a few other misc items. The proto la panel is for dbe's. The proto sign is a sign that was displayed by shops selling proto tools. It's made of masonite and is almost 2' wide.

Needless to say I'm way stoked on these! It's pretty uncommon to find one of these Plomb tool panels, let alone 2 in the same place, not to mention the sign. The old timer said he purchased these panels in 1992 at the same swap I met him at in 2024. I still need to get them cleaned up and on my walls. I'm still smiling from ear to ear. My persistence paid off finally and the old timer also told me he has more Plomb /Proto to clear out and I get first shot :)
