@Outlawmws ***** for a $20 Reed!

PS: I bought some retroreflective tent line a while back. It's a life-changer when nature calls in the middle of the night! It looks like laser beams in a headlamp.

The reed was $15 of the $20 the brass, Kleins, and 2 big C-Clamps were the other $5

I'l look into the reflective lines, I got these as I can snag into them in broad daylight. Mind you I like sisal rope for guy lines functionally, but it also "blends in"...

Estate sale ($40): Perkins /Perko marine brass ship standing light (c. 1920)

Interwebs suggest that they were used in the WWI. Painted black when I got it. I've seen a couple others that were also painted black so maybe that's what they did in the navy. Decided to strip the paint, but didn't polish. Kerosine lamp is gone and converted to electric. Popped in a vintage flicker flame bulb. Here's the vid.

The Rock Island is covered in a couple coats of nasty paint but the jaws are nice and crisp and no signs of damage from what I could tell at a cursory glance. Easily worth the $15 they were asking.

This Thermos lantern is a little rough but you just don’t see them, especially in Wards Western Field livery. This one will probably get a resto and stay in the collection
IMG_9943.jpeg

I didn’t feel like digging the Vise Grip board out, but it’s as clean as these are. Not bad for a little more uncommon brand boards. I can’t stop buying these things when I see them.

Been a good weekend so far. First was a 240 arrival at an estate sale scheduled to close at 3 o’clock. I thought it was gonna be open the next day too, but was wrong, as I found out at 259.

Quick perusal thru the garage yielded only average tools, didn’t grab any, the yard had some potted plants for MLW. A pass thru the rest of the house revealed some vintage camera stuff, but all Nikon, so nothing of interest. Heading up to pay, I saw what looked like a silverware chest on some shelves, got closer, saw Meccano on the front. Decent price, opened it up, nothing inside, except a few latch parts which had fallen off, and a decal saying Meccano No. 3x. I was gonna google GJ to see what the knowledge was, and was told it was 259. No chance. Grabbed it. Web says it’s no newer than 1927, they were green in 1928. More details in the construction toys thread later tonight.

Today’s post dog run stop was the second weekend of a 22yr resident having to move out as his rental was sold. ☹️. Car mechanic, mid rebuild on a 1930s era vehicles, frame off. Also some woodworking tools, plumbing, electrical etc. Lots of carbs, clamps, torches etc. Again, some plants for MLW, few things for me. No room in the truck, or enough money, so they held some stuff while I went home, emptied the truck bed, grabbed MLW and some cash. Went back, spent even more on plants and pots, and had a nice chat with the sellers while shopping.

B&D Macho III roto hammer, which uses the same spline bits as my Bosch that took a dump right when I needed it, plus included some adapters for SDS I think. Also a Bergman tool Queen City 12” curved adjustable, and a solar battery charger. Not a great price on the tools, but the plants were, so it all averaged out.

I am going to play hell finding a globe for that lantern, but I’m reading some things that a Coleman 275 might be a suitable fit.

I’ve been MIA for personal reasons recently, but I managed to get to the monthly-ish barn sale today.

I suspect the guy cherry picks the big name tools because I never find any tool truck brands, but I’ve done well on older tools there.

We were getting ready to leave and I spotted this in a bin full of import/no name drivers.

It was pretty grimy, but cleaned up pretty decent. All the bits were in the handle.
Wera for $1.

Old Faithful! Spied her sitting in a box of random junk at the curb a few years ago. It's been my daily keyboard for probably 5+ years at this point. I get asked to go on mute if I'm typing during zoom meetings at work.
What's the allure of this key board? I remember these from computers in the 90's when I was a kid. The keys on these things are terrible and make your fingers feel like they are wearing stilts :) Are these key boards super hard to find or have an unmatched vintage allure?

Wow!

I had a big box full of those things left over from various projects at work. I had one friend who absolutely LOVED those, so I made sure that he had a lifetime supply of them.

Snap-on TMX140 extension. I did not notice that it was inscribed before I paid $5 for it. I will, eventually, give it away or donate it. It looks like it was barely used. IMG_4977.jpeg

It's a "go with what you know" type of thing I guess. I started playing with a VT220 terminal in Dad's home office as a kid and the keyboard on that terminal had a similar touch and feel. My first computer was an IBM PS/2 Model 50 and it came with a Model-M keyboard. Being young and dumb I upgraded to that latest and greatest and tossed that keyboard.

My son went thru a cool keyboards phase and built a few custom keyboards, with lights and custom key caps. He awakened my interest and keyboards a little. The IBM Model-M keyboard has some $ value, as keyboard geeks like the feel of them.

On Saturday, I decided to go for a bit of a drive, heading up into the next state for a couple decent looking sales. This isn't too far really, but there hasn't been anything of interest around here in a few weeks, so...

54448869601_e5c5a40655_b.jpg
The first sale yielded some things of interest: Audel's Truck and Tractor book, Snap-on and Matco catalogs, Walden fixed socket spinner, Herbrand 1-1/16 combo, Ray socket, Armstrong wrench, and Blackhawk drainplug tool.

54449123808_da1e317c93_b.jpg
The next sale was a bust, but at the stop after that I found two Craftsman BE swivels, a Bonney 1/4" socket, and a nice small vise. Probably import, but cute. Then I swung out to hit a sale in another county, were I found a 1/2" to hex adaptor, heavy duty driver and SK hex ratchet. Finally, I just made it to the warehouse sale Provincial hit in the morning, where he left me a Williams 1-1/16 combo, Bluepoint DBE, two interesting wood drivers, and some English style boring bits.

All in all, a nice day for a country drive in spring.

Made a last day 1/2 price estate sale this morning. Not a lot, but grabbed a 60s vintage Coleman Stove/Cooler stand in the box for $1.50, a Firestone Supreme jack plane for a buddy’s collection for $25, and a Jotul No.6 cast iron waffle maker for $30.

You absolutely have to hit the small town yard sales. That’s where the treasure are.

The smaller the sign, the worse the directions the better.
I don't know just how small a "small town" is to you, but the one I live near--Enterprise, OR--has a population of about 2,000, counting some livestock--and it's the largest town in the county.

People around here have a unique genius for bad signage and unfollowable directions.

But they still have the Internet and most of them seem to believe that asking prices on Ebay and Etsy are a good starting point for pricing.

A local "Second-hand Antiques" store, in the even tinier town of Lostine, would price the Reeds and RIs at no less that $300 each, and not be bothered by the fact that they just sit on the shelf for years. Hence, I refer to it as the "Second-hand Antique Museum".

This is way too often, everywhere. I love it when I land in a place that actually wants to move stuff.

A quick post, picked up this Craftsman "mailbox" 1/4 HP grinder with Crown Logo stand a few days ago. I mostly wanted the stand, I'll put one of my nicer block grinders on it. Gotta go, need to unload from my big haul from a closed engine machine shop!

Curb picked ($0): 3 - Eschbach pots (made in Germany); 2 - 30 lbs dumbells; 1 computer w/ Acer IPISB-VR motherboard, i5 2320 quad core cpu, Cooler Master 700 power supply; XFX Radeon HD6870 graphics card, 4 - Ripjaws X DDR3-1600 8 gig x 2 ram (32 gigs total).

Earthday in Des Moines. In the past I would cruise pretty far with my daughter picking up stuff people put on the curbside, but this year just did my block. Pretty happy to end up with just a few pieces.

Go back and ask for the case for that computer--you have everything else!

Those Corsair RAM cards were premium in their day!

So yesterday morning I got a phone call from an old car club buddy. "You need to come to this automotive machine shop sale I'm working, Ford parts and tools and all kinds of stuff. I was already heading into town for recycling 65 junk tires that Shreveport Green was doing this weekend and the machine shop was not far away. So I went LOL. It had been picked over already but there were a LOT of valve covers. So I bought them all! Some were broken and were just wall hangers. Decent set of Dodge M/T valve covers for 340 and 440, 2 good sets of Ford covers for FE 390-427, Ford SB Holley set, Corvette valve covers with Moon breathers for the vibtage Hot Rod crowd and SB Chevy black Ansen covers. The rest have issues that make them cheap wallpapers. 20250413_103715.jpg20250413_103734.jpg20250413_103743.jpg20250413_105423.jpg20250413_105426.jpg20250413_105504.jpg20250413_105530.jpg20250413_110319.jpg20250413_110328.jpg

@liliysdad :

Tip: Make a lightweight top for it and you have an ultra-light, compact camp side table:
:+1:

I use the same tops I made for those useless cloth "Umbrella" folding camp tables. only the high stand is a LOT more comfortable to work/cook at. I even made a "double wide" and use 2 stands for it.

You can also put those 24X18" commercial aluminum baking trays on top for a table top.

More stuff from the automotive machine shop sale. Snap On harmonic balancer puller set, OTC Ford axle tool set, Lyon 18 drawer hardware box, Oldsmobile floor shifter for a 442, 2" stainless steel billets for custom camshafts, 3/4" x 72" real copper rod and a lot more smalls!20250413_111107.jpg20250413_111731.jpg20250413_112119.jpg20250413_114354.jpg20250413_114359.jpg20250413_114402.jpg20250413_114409.jpg20250413_115413.jpg20250413_115710.jpg
