Does this get me any you *****?
Broke my tibia in a four wheeler accident on Easter Sunday. So no tool haul for me right now. Was weight bearing right after surgery.
Went from a walker to crutches to now, just a brace on my right leg to keep my knee locked while I walk. Because of my quad muscle damage had a 1 1/2 inch deep gash in my inner thigh.

I spent a lot of time in Alaska in the 1980's. It was 3-wheelers then, and they were really accident prone. The worst thing about a 3-wheeler was that it got unstable if you went slow, so everyone kept their speed up. The manufacturers got sued so bad they came up with 4-wheelers in the mid-80's. Now 4-wheelers have grown so heavy that they really do some damage when they get tipped over or crashed.

My favorite junk store in beautiful downtown Sequim had this apparently never-used "Spec Tools" "Squeezewrench" set and a pair of locking pliers which seem to look familiar but have no discernable markings at all.
The Goodwill Store (right across the street) had a couple cheap Barbies to add to the garde
Nice; they definitely look like Petersen vise grips. Curious to see if any markings show up under the rust.

I mean, it's certainly a pretty unique piece of hardware, in great working order, and you've got a fantastic record of where it came from!

But I just can't summon up the wish-it-had-been-me feeling. I will say it absolutely *****, though.

Got my Justrite Streamlined carbide lamp working. Soaked it in vinegar overnight and voila. Fired right up. The only challenge was figuring out that you have to hold your hand over the reflector to capture some acetylene, then run your palm across the striker to get it to ignite. Just flicking the striker doesn't work. The other odd thing is that even with the water turned off it continues to run. It seems to take very little moisture to make acetylene from calcium carbide.

It's very cool bit of kit.

POP!

Love that sound--but I can't really stand the smell of carbide burning anymore.

Depending on how long it burns after you close the water valve, it may not be closing fully. Did you fill the top with water and take it off to see?

It continues to put out a tiny flame for at least enough time for me to run down to Menards and back. I checked the water feed tube and no water is running. I opened the can and let out any trapped gas and it doesn't seem to be producing any more gas. Probably opened the valve to wide and let too much water into the chamber. I'll have to goof around with it a bit more.

I figure vacuum seal the carbide into 1/2 oz packets and off it goes into my camping gear.

That's fairly normal. Playing around with the water flow will get you right.

Did you replace the seal between the carbide and water portions? It can be disturbing when flames start issuing from there.

We used these back in the day ('70s-'80s) for caving. The energy density of carbide was far higher than any existing battery tech then--alkalines being the height of the tech. They were also bright, even compared to the new, high-falutin' halide headlamp bulbs. But they stank, they were VERY hot and they did need to be refilled about once an hour. A plastic baggie for the waste and old-school film-cans for the refills while using the back-up battery headlamp did the job.

Justrite made some very fancy ones with nylon gas generators--some with remote generators. I could never afford one of those. I still have my old Autolite I used to explore unmapped caves in Grand Canyon and a Justrite similar to yours I picked up a few years back.

I even have my old hat:

PS: DO NOT LEAVE CARBIDE RESIDUE IN THE LAMP! It'll corrode it. Empty and wash with warm water after every use.

Wow, THAT *****!

I'm amazed that your leg was weight-bearing so quickly, that's a very good sign.

As mentioned above, none of this is a contest, but I thought my Easter was rough because I hit a rabbit on the way home from dinner at my sister's house. That was the SECOND time I killed the Easter Bunny. First time was in college 30+ years ago (same way)...

Get well soon. I think your first hunt needs to be for a scooter, that way you'll have no excuse to avoid the sales...

That looks way more complicated and painful than my OTJ incident In Oct '23 . Shot me self with a 23 ga pinner. Required outpatient surgery and 6 weeks of follow up care.

We had a lot of garage sales in town this weekend, starting Thursday. On our way to one that advertised "man stuff" and "tap and die sets", we saw a sign for an unadvertised sale and stopped there. As we drove up we talked about not stopping, but it turned out to be a good start for the day. The big Channellocks, Diamond K36 pliers, Stanley cat's paw and a rusty Pritzlaff Hardware wrench. The advertised "man stuff" at the next sale was mostly rusty farm tools, and the "tap and die set" was a few large taps and dies loose in a cardboard box and very rusty--marked $65 will not separate. A disappointing sale. Next stop was at a woman I worked with years ago, whose husband died and she was moving, and I got the box of 15 or 16 different Loctite products ($1)and a Kennedy K-20 tool box ($2.00). Third sale resulted in me getting a Chinese made 8" grinder for $10. And then on the way home, we found an estate sale that we hadn't been aware of, that had started hours earlier, but I did get two full unopened cans of Coleman fuel for $1 each, a set of 8 Grace screwdrivers ($5), a Speedy Stitcher sewing awl, an Eagle oil can and a small bar clamp, all $1 each. And then I asked if they would consider less for the camera case with 2 Graflex 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 press cameras, one a Speed Graphic with the focal plane shutter. The outfit was marked $120 and she said "How about $80?" so I brought the cameras home too. I used a Graflex of that size when I was the photographer for my high school paper and yearbook many years ago, and had one of my own years ago also which got sold long ago, but I think I still have a few things for that film size around. And I got a few books on local history and Wisconsin vegetation and animals at some of the sales, but the rest of the sales on Thursday and Friday were a bust for me--but the wife go 3 large shopping bags of wool yarn for knitting socks on her circular knitting machine and an armload of knitting and spinning books, so she was happy too.

Here is my CL pickup from last night. Tried to set it up for Monday after work, but a cold got in the way.

Seller was older than I, and his retirement project was making putters in his garage, he was moving out a few tools that he didn’t need anymore.

Decent price, not a steel, made in Germany, 1-5/8” face Dial Test Indicator (I believe). Came with a mounting system. Looks like a US brand, Ash Precision, Detroit 8. Circa 1965

Tomorrow won’t be much finding, as we are selling at a HS monthly flea market, hoping to get rid of some surplus household stuff, and tools too. Tho, if our booth settles down, I might sneak away to search. We go 2-3 times per year. Paly space 70 if anyone is nearby.

Cleanouts at work are ongoing...

I picked up some plexiglass sheets today (pics / measurements later if I remember, LOL), but they threw away a filing cabinet I'd been waiting to pick up. Oh well, there are more, I'll grab some later in the month/year.

There are 4 Scotch racks waiting for me, I need to bring my trailer to pick them up. 8' high, 4' wide, 30" deep. Corrugated steel shelves, some also have thin sheets (of something) covering them.

Anyone heard of these?

20250430_172926~2.jpg

What I really want is a bunch of pallet racks, but my manager is hell-bent on selling all of them (we have tons, they won't miss a few)...

Finally finding a few tools. I think the corroded ratchet is an early 40s craftsman. The guy claims he used the chainsaw last summer and now it won't start. All in for $17

Today's small haul:

Forgot the pre-lever Petersens:

54510377446_242e6fa500_o.jpg

Not bad for $10.

54510639888_cc7b737e2d_o.jpg

The rules are for combination squares--one Union, The other LSS. The Starrett is thicker than any rule I've handled.

Any advice for cleaning a paper label?

The only marking I can find on the big crimpers. BoE. I'll see what comes out once they come out of the sodium citrate.

Yes I have some Scotch Rack .They went out of business a few years ago so you cannot get replacement parts.

I figured as much. I found a place online selling whole (used) units:
