Yes, I was going to resaw some of them into 3x4 studs for my greenhouse, and add a rebate both sides for the fixed glazing and casements to sit in. It's what I wanted to do originally but didn't have the right framing material.

General idea.

Nice!

Wondered why the greenhouse project was back burnered.

I've always loved watching your projects and your woodworking skills, but you probably could have done an entire thread on just the deck. WELL DONE SIR!!

I have a couple questions since i'm getting ready to resurface my old 32 x 16 deck with a couple long steps up to a smaller 8x10 ish deck. would you still use Timbertech (which type did you use) and how has it weathered the last year or so or is there another product you wish was available or that you knew about? did you use the screws and plugs or the hidden fasteners? aluminum railings?

I noticed you did the blocking to firm it up so did it? also are your joists 12 inch on center or 16?

Thanks and keep up the great work and have a great day!!

Thanks.

No complaints about the timbertech (it was the legacy line). I'd likey use it again if I built another deck. It looks the same as when I installed it.

The decking is screwed and plugged.

Blocking seemed to make a bit of a difference. It's a very solid feeling deck. Though I would say that was mostly from upsizing to 2x10' joists on 12" centers (10' span)

Thanks for the 411 on your Timbertech deck. you did an excellent job and I'm not sure you mentioned what it ended up costing you in materials and labor not including yours, but I bet it was a bit less than the 90k bid you recieved.

would you do the aluminum railings again too if you had a choice especially with your woodworking skills or was that expense that was well worth the money. have they also held up as well as your deck? maybe an annual pressure washing on everything is all you need or do you have to do other maintenence?

glad to hear you would have room for that huge machine in your shop cause i'm still hoping to build a small woodshop to make room for my tools and my shopsmith lathe and planers and shapers that are in storage or that I have to use outside when weather permits.

hope you are having a great weekend!

Labor was zero, if I don't count my time, and my dad worked for meals and beer, so not much there either..lol. Cost (to this point because it's actually not finished) is around 18k (8k was just the timbertech and 1k for the cortex screws) framing was another 3k or so. The rest was railing, pvc sheet, epdm rubber and other miscellaneous expenses.

I like the maintenance free aspect of the vinyl/metal railing. I would do the same again. Same for the pvc wrapping. I'd prefer a wood ceiling/soffit but it never would have worked out.

Unfortunately I don't really have room for the mortiser. Not if I wanted to actually use it or anything else in my shop.. but I could fit it in there..lol

Oddly it has a treated band joist, which seems likely a replacement from the last time this happened. Still zero flashing. So close but still a giant preventable failure.

Sad.

Flashing behind the band, z-flash on the ledger, and tape the z to the main flashing and ensure the main flashing is a good 6-8” up for snow.

Very cheap compared to your friend’s issue now.

What I can't understand is why they didn't flash anything. The treated band joist shows the knew there would be or had been water intrusion previously and was repaired. Under $200 in material would have saved it

They cut the deck joists to gain access so it's also going to be a complete new deck. He got two quotes on the replacement 18k and 30k (280sqft composite decking)

And he gets to deal with the reston hoa for replacement approval.

Because I didn't have one(this length)

Spare beam for my Martin t17. Rare extended version that allows 19" more travel 72" vs 53". Not a huge difference but it was offered at a price that was reasonable and delivered to my garage. Still in the original crate from martin.

Very nice. Great score.

With regards to the leak, it shouldn’t happen there, overloaded from the top roof down pipe ?
Another down pipe from above to lessen the volume at that point, maybe.

I expect there is a leak in the roof and the downspout is just making things worse. I told him to try a kickout and see if it makes a difference. He wants to move the downspout to the other side of the house.

I see a lot of backstops around here to prevent the water from flowing right over the edge of the gutter where that upper downspout lets out. Probably not the proper term but hopefully it makes sense.

We had a similar leak that the previous owner "fixed" by having the front of the basement dug up and a French drain into a sump pump with battery backup in addition to the gutters being run well out of the yard. I guess water was going down the walls and ending up in the basement? The second roofer who came to fix the leak for us saw there was a piece of flashing missing between the roof and the window dormer.

Best of luck to your friend getting everything fixed. That rain we had yesterday was nasty. Not fun driving home through it.

Good morning, How is the baby? What did you buy(tool wise, toy wise for yourself) . How far back did your friend peel back and did they find the leak?

Any projects, again besides raising another human :)

Baby is doing well, he is a fan of the pool currently. Whichis good considering the hear wave we are currentlyin the midst of. 20250622_162303.jpg

I impulse bought the milwaukee 16" chainsaw yesterday. I was at home depot for some plants and a pool filter hose replacement and the center isle sale display got me. I was 2stroke OPE forever, until I picked up the string trimmer in the spring. I was amazed at the run time and power (using the new forge batteries) I decided to try out the saw as well.

Not sure how my friend is faring with thr leaking house. He was hoping to strip the rotten sheathing this weekend. He had to pull the deck boards and realized they were face nailed and blind nailed to each joist. He might still be trying to rip them out.

Project wise I feel like nothing is getting done. I was off for a 4 day weekend and barely managed to get the grass cut. The ztr starter solenoid wasn't engaging (managed to tap it i to starting a few times until that didn't work) so pulled the starter ans removed thr solenoid. I oiled/greased the plunger and that seems to have fixed it. Until it started throwing the drive and blade belts. I realized the motor was loose again (it rattles the 4 bolts loose even with red loctite, I'm going to have to drill the 4 bolt heads and safety wire them in place, to keep them in place. The tensioner mounting bolt for the blade belt is loose in its bore so the tension arm can flop around. I need to lift thr front of the mower up and just weld the bolt to the deck to keep it from moving.

I did manage to move some plants from one garden bed where they were overtaking things, but dug up a bumble bee nest (and got stung) in the process.. I have about a million projects left and what feels like zero time

You will get time back eventually but that is life with young children for at least the next few years for you. The projects won't go anywhere they will wait for you. :ROFLMAO:

My kids are 16 and about to be 19. I have to go looking for them most of the time if I want to talk to them or see them nowadays.

I agree our kids grow up to fast. I worked a lot of 12 hour days when my kids (5 of them from 51 to 35 year old twins) were little so I missed a lot of the little moments I’m getting now with our grandkids when we see them or have them over for a sleepover. I did try to make it to most of the games and school functions even if it meant working late after those finished.

We’ve got 7 grandkids now that all have good parents so we get to pop in and out of their lives as much or little as we like. Raising kids is sort of like a roller coaster ride with a lot of highs and lows and bumps along the way so enjoy the ride and pay attention to who they hang out with.

Good luck!!

You're welcome from the midwest....we shared that fun heat with you...though I think you got it worse as it was at least cooling off more overnight here. Think my high Saturday was 100 which was a couple degrees cooler then forecasted and gusts to the low 30 mph actually made it not terrible

And has been warm enough overall to outpace my ac over the last 2 days. Had to put a extra window unit I had in to drop it back slightly. Still need another 10k-20k btu to maintain imho. My wife is irritated the upstairs ac still isn't working, but it's only been broken for 8 years.. lol 😆
