Thanks...tough is a common word in our vocab recently....succinct and accurate.

Keeping the small critters down is the best thing I can say about the coyotes. We have a couple that room around but not enough that I think they're doing much good on the booming rabbit population...

Thanks sir! And yeah...there are always nuisance animals no matter where you live....I guess if mine will be rabbits I can tolerate that...better then bears or skunks some of the other options!

Appreciate it gents. We were admittedly behind the game on hospice, we should've been investigating and learning more earlier....I'll be smarter for the next time while hoping there isn't a next time to walk this path. So far we're very happy with it, there is some second guessing by the wife on if we're making the right decision which is generally alleviated for the short term when I remind her the other option is skilled nursing (care home) and then he's one of many, without the level of privacy and support for all that he's got where he is.
Theres always second guessing, but I have never seen it be the wrong decision. For his safety and comfort always keep that in mind first and foremost. Stay strong.

So sorry what you and your family are having to go through. Seems like you all have had a challenging few years. I hope this is the last thing you have to deal with for a long time.

Yeah...tough couple of years for sure. In good news I've been exceptionally blessed and fortunate till the last couple years as I've had minimum serious injury or death in the family, still have (3) of my grandparents with us...though that streak has long odds of continuing as they're all over 90 so that time is coming.

Sorry to hear about your father in law.

Martin

Thanks Sir...hope you're getting some much needed rain from this storm

Sorry to hear about your FIL. **** cancer.

I hear you on the clean-out. We just lost my grandfather earlier this year and my father 1.5 years ago, so I know what it's like.

Thanks sir....yeah not looking forward to the clean out. Working to meet up with an estate sale company I like next week to see if they think it's a viable target for them or not. I have my doubts but want to get their thoughts. Otherwise we're working to get some of the grandkids who are in high school or college and not working this summer to help their grandma out and sort thru a lot of it this summer....it's a pipe dream but maybe it'll get some success!

Much appreciated sir.

Once you go through and take personal, family, sentimental items etc etc maybe call around to a couple auction companies. We have a few that we work with that will do buy outs. They will come in and give you a number, if you like it, take your check and walk away. Our's anyways will pack, load, clean etc etc so at the end of the day you have a check and an empty house. Their money is made on the sales side so whatever they offer is what you get, no more fees. That might be an option to look into if you want to take care of it in one fatal swoop. So start calling around asking if they will come in and just do a buy out. An estate sale might take a few weekends if there are a lot of items and whatever doesn't sell you are most of the time left with to still deal with. Which at that point if it didn't sell its "trash" so after the sale you will still have to clean out the house anyways. We have also found that a lot of estate sales will not work in a house that is not up to their standards for liability reasons. So if it's too full or too messy they can't do it onsite so have to haul everything to another location which sometimes gets you for a moving fee too. We rarely rarely, like maybe once every few years do an actual estate sale because they of their red tape etc. We almost exclusively use auctions. Either everything is hauled off in one swoop and sold and you get the sales minus commissions maybe little at a time depending on their sales and payment schedules or we just do a buy out get the money day one and wash our hands of it.

I was hoping some of your professional experience might get shared...thanks good sir!

Auctions seem to be less common here on the residential/non-farm properties. After helping with my grandparents one a couple years ago we aren't keen to go down that route. I suspect a buy out or estate sales is the best bet...likely the buyout but starting with the estate company I know of (who does do both buy outs and actual in the house estate sales) and going to see what his thoughts are.

Plus side is that it's not hoarding level full....and it's generally well organized, sorted in totes and clean etc....just a bunch....and not really very valuable items...lots of household "stuff", holiday decorations for every holiday etc. As the mother in law is on Medicaid for now, we'll have to deal with some of their rules as well in regards to valuation, so having a professional business do a buyout gives some additional validity to the valuation we have to put down for personal property/household goods when we get to that point and putting numbers to augmented estate value etc. Those are future problems though....trying not to get ahead of ourselves and worrying about those too much just yet...

But in a moment of weakness I seem to be doing some online FB marketplace therapy shopping....missed a killer deal over lunch hour as I was 1st loser on the item....but contemplating a different purchase now....man I need to get back to using some of the tools vs just buying them

Little something to keep the grass growing without artificial water

rain1.jpg

And when it dries out maybe the kids can find their foam balls:

ball holder.jpg

Number 2 is just starting after I made the opening just a touch smaller to hopefully prevent any balls from falling out accidentally....don't want that to happen!

2 hour print, right at 100 grams in the model so the cost is around $1.50. Modeling time was probably 15 or 20 minutes.

Try reaching out to and or looking up a company call MaxSold. They have a little different approach that works well in certain situations. You can either pay them or you can do it yourself to take photographs and upload them to their server. They then list everything online in a virtual auction and everything is sold online. Then you pick 2-3 days where the buyers have to schedule to pick up their items but they handle all that. Usually they scheduled picks in 10 minute blocks so that you aren't bombarded by a mass of people at the same time. You just have a fast steady flow all day. If they miss their pickup they can beg for another chance or you can just say no and sell it again or donate whatever you chose.

So lets see....whats happening

Honestly...not a lot. Making the motivation to get out there and do **** in the limited time has been a challenge...but maybe get some time this weekend.

Bought some solar lights, mounted them every other fence post...like how it looks so need to mount the rest.

20250607_222408.jpg

Playing on a a little relay box to plug the air compressor into. Will hopefully turn off power to the compressor after current draw has stopped and garage lights have been off for x minutes. Turn power on after garage lughts have been on for y minutes....more to come as i program one of these Shellys for the first time

20250613_215455.jpg

Found an 8" digital caliper, NIB for a steal...so need to decide where it will live and make a holder for it

20250608_163429.jpg

And time to find the missing balls and see what else needs mounts made for the kids toy wall

I would say it's only being productive if you are multitasking and simultaneously removing roughly 12oz at a time from the fridge to assist in making more room for groceries for the Mrs.

A Busch latte and a Shandy were both sacrificed to the recycle pile....gotta make room for the Busch Latte Apple that is supposed to show up soon

In other actual updates, found out I didnt investigate deep enough and the Shelly relay I bought was 16 amps max across 2 circuits, 10 amps per which wont work for the intended purpose. So I will invent a use for it so I can learn the programming on it, while I wait for a new 30amp relay to show up tomorrow.

Probably seen this before but I could not resist. Happy Fathers Day too

3D printing.jpg

Not sure I had seen that one before...I like it!
Happy Father's Day all!

Did get a bit of time on the compressor relay project to install the new relay

20250615_142640.jpg

Bit tight for the box but looks like it will work

Link for those interested

Did have to setup a new 2.4ghz only wifi network but with the Ubiquiti setup took about a minute and was able to be done off the phone. Also have the remote button mounted at the door by the light switches to manually trigger it

The app (eWeLink) for this relay seems... unimpressive...but for the cost it is what it is. It supports Google and Alexa integrations so thats how I'll likely integrate with it. I might look harder at a different(and more expensive) relay option from automation direct or Mouser but if it integrates well....not sure i care???

That compressor relay is a great idea! (and can't beat the price)

I'm definitely stealing that one -- I'd like to turn my compressor on/off remotely.

And nice job on the wiring in that box -- the outlet and strain relief look professional.

Thanks sir! I was initially going to put a 2' or 3' cord whip for each and then the male and female plug ends, but by the time you buy decent plug ends etc it's same price or cheaper to buy the "appliance" cord type solution like I did and then put in a panel mount receptacle plug and I agree....it makes a much nicer looking finished product!

Link for appliance cord: https://a.co/d/fxe9zMG

Or in place of appliance cord, rob that drawer of power cords most of us have floating around and cut the female end off an old computer power cable. I would've done that but I actually cleaned out that drawer in the last 9 months and got rid of most extras

I personally like the Busch apple as far as the flavored Lattes go. We got apple in Ohio around beginning of May. We just got the newly released lime and it's probably my least favorite. Had peach last year as well and rumor is it will be back in July/August time frame.

Few minor wins

Bought a 50 pack of orings from Mcmaster so i could fix the air fill probe for the rabbit slayer. Its a precharged unit which fills off a scuba type tank and Mcmaster was the best shipping and not that much more money then other sources offering 5 packs

20250616_195539.jpg

Now time to get back to protecting the fresh plants in the front yard

Trying to work out the settings on doing photo engraving on slate coasters

20250621_142301.jpg

Replaced the clear lens on the Uvex Bionic face shields.

20250621_142958.jpg

And got the compressor up on the shelf after getting a new outlet wired up for it.

20250622_091130.jpg

Need to get some clean up items done and an inline filter/drain on it but then think this will be done...ish. Still need to anchor it down to ensure it doesn't try and walk off...then maybe it'll be done.

Also got the included remote paired to the relay for the compressor. You have to pair the remote button to the relay thru the app, once I found the right spot in the app it was painless and works well.

Progress

20250622_161103.jpg

Now to cut down the feed line from compressor to regulator to make it not a 25' hose coiled up....

And to put away all this

20250622_161133.jpg

Replace a rotary coupling on a Cox hose reel which is leaking, make a safety tie down for the compressor so it can't "walk" off the shelf and can probably call this project done

Logan,
what about 3d Printing "coasters" for the feet on the compressor to sit in to keep it from walking?

Jason

I like this better...thank you! Had mulled over in my head a 2x4 or similar "lip" around it to keep it captive but didn't like the concept of lugging it up and over on the rare occasion it has to come off the shelf. A couple of pucks the rubber feet sit in can help keep it from walking while not being as burdensome to get repositioned in.

Made some progress on cleaning as tomorrow is trash day...then opened up a new goodie

20250623_212652.jpg

Vevor 13A drill bit sharpener. Been wanting something similar for awhile and at $200 ish it's supposed to be way more machine than a higher end Drill Doctor for not much more money. Several good YouTube videos out there on it but I liked this one from Mr Pete the most

Between Mr Pete and @DocsMachine review here:

Thread 'Vevor Drill Sharpener' https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/vevor-drill-sharpener.544897/

They gave me enough faith it wasn't Chinesium garbage as I'm still skeptical of Vevor and similar brands

I won't bore with all the details, the other reviews do it far better then me...but impressed.

It took a pretty abused bit

20250623_210758.jpg

20250623_210824.jpg

And put a pretty nice looking and symmetric grind and relief on it in under a minute even for a novice who was learning it.

20250623_212042.jpg

20250623_212035.jpg

Getting the bit length/positioned in the chuck correct is the only fussy part...and once you learn the sequence it is pretty fast to do, especially if you aren't changing diameter much. Will be scheduling some time here soon to sit down and start going thru the drill index and working away...it's also very quiet so the kids won't get fussy if I do it around them which is an added bonus.

Very curious on the drill sharpener, and a review after some more use of the bits.

I've wanted a drill doctor or something similar or years, but they always seemed a bit pricey for the benefit, especially once a HF was 5min away ( :ROFLMAO: )...but this could be a good addition to the shop, along with finally investing in a nice drill index

I haven't had good success with the Drill Doctors I've tried. I've had better luck with hand sharpening drills from maybe 3/8" and up. Little ones are pretty much throwaways at work, though obviously my time is less "valuable" at home. :)

Yup, escaped the kids for the night and tried a Puerto Rican place I had driven by a bunch and never tried.

20250628_172727.jpg

Seems wrong to pair it with @Boostingaz favorite Busch Latte so did Mojito and some rum concoction for the misses

Would definitely go back....and plan on taking some home as it was more then I should have had!

Ok, to detail a project a bit more...

A year or so ago I started making a "plane till" or a holder for wood planes....had a screwup on a shelf, project-itis got in the way and something distracted me elsewhere...surprise! Well trying to at least get it functional so it can....hold planes! Seems inappropriate to finish something....so we'll see if I can get this past the 90% stage or not

I had already cut the back for the planes to sit on out of some 1/2" prefinished plywood

plane till 1.jpg

Needed some trim around the edges and for the dividers so ripped down some walnut pieces I had picked up somewhere to 1/2" x 5/8", then put an 1/8" roundover on the top 2 edges. The bit I wanted was already in the cordless router and clamping it down to the top of the router table actually worked nicely

plane tille 2.jpg

plane till 3.jpg

Used the miter gauge for the crosscutting

plane till 4.jpg

Test layout:
plane till 5.jpg

Then super glued the perimeter pieces down as I figured they weren't moving. Should've mitered the corners but **** jointed them....small regret but it's shop furniture

plane till 6.jpg

Finish on the walnut is Danish Oil

Attached the dividers between the spaces with screws drilled from the back so they were concealed and able to be moved around down the road...at least easier then if I super glued them down

plane till 7.jpg

Being able to clamp the board vertical to the side of the workbench was a handy feature here

And mostly done...

plane till 8.jpg

The couple of short cross pieces required so far are cut and finish is drying...those will hopefully go in still today.

Left room for future purchases...2 big slots are open for the #8 which is ridiculous when I already have an 8" powered jointer and a #7 jointer plane...but it's fun :) and a #6. It'll be tilted back at whatever angle I made the case for, plus will be super gluing in a large diameter rare earth magnet (or two) to help reduce the risk of accidental bumps causing serious problems.

Plane till is looking good!

I did something very similar with the magnets. Unfortunately if you if hit the till hard enough it can still knock a plane out. Ask me how I know...

Thanks sir! Felt good to actually make a bit of progress on some "shop life improvement" projects....now to see if I can get any time on the upcoming long weekend to keep it going

We have our annual family and friends July 4th Farm bash this weekend. So live band, food, multiple bounce houses it sounds like this year. So very little will be getting done around here 🤣🤣

Thanks!

Yeah....that has me worried....nothing in that rack is very high dollar but I ordered these for delivery tomorrow I think to hopefully reduce that risk:

magnet.JPG

Thinking 1 per small plane and 2 each for the slots for the #6/7/8

May need to make a little 3d printed insert for where the plane handle hits the bottom as it's making a couple of them a bit unstable and wobbly but should be an easy project

LOL yeah....nothing is happening in the shop....just embrace it and enjoy :)

Did you pick up a Domino I can't remember or did you do this with some other jig?

Plane till looks nice! I like the two-tone with the walnut bits

I admire your ability to slowly chip away at things. All those small progresses add up.
