That's a YOU **** score! The mantles are easily worth far more than you paid. I'd like to see the generators laid out where I can see what they're for, but figure each one is worth more than you laid out.

The big-hat lantern... definitely needs more and better pictures! From the knurled, screw-on pump cap that appears to be steel and fuel cap that also appears to be steel, (magnet test) 228C from '45. It should bear a US stamp on the bottom, though. It should also have a large, yellow decal below the valve.

Oh, ****--Coincidence Control Center is working over time! I went to look for pictures of a similar one I have--and it's the exact same date!

You'll need to remove the old, fossilized gasket first. Screw the cap down as tight as you can (without damaging it) and give the screw in the center a goodly snap o' the wrist with a well-fitting screwdriver. Might take a few tries. That will separate the inner part of the cap with the gasket from the shiny bits. Throw that inner bit into the campfire or use a torch to get it to about glowing hot, then douse it in water--that usually blows the old gasket out. Use a small screwdriver or toothpick or whatever and scrape it clean, then install the o-ring from the hardware store. The o-rings that don't specify Viton are almost always Buna-N, which is just as good for this use.

Now for the bad news: Like any "roarer" burner stove, it has two settings: Thermonuclear and off.

Useless fact o' the day: This stove was marketed as the "GI Pocket Stove--The Stove That Won The War".

It was never used by the US military. The Stove That Won The War, according to Ernie Pyle, was the milspec model 520. Yours is the model 530--made post-war for the civilian market. The "real" one, the 520, also had folding legs to make it more stable--something the 530 could really use.

Fun little uke. Off to my daughter as she lost her other one. I'll get her a case and a mild warning to try and keep track of this one. I guessed the date as it has no made in USA on inside stamp, small sticker on front and bar frets.​

Thanks for the info … honestly, I haven’t paid much attention to Coleman Lanterns until the GJ pushers … errr influencers … started posting!!

There are 20+ mantles and they are all Silk-Lites. Here’s a photo of the goodies drying in the back of my 4Runner. There’s also an old manual/pamphlet that I haven’t leafed through.




That’s the exact same lantern and it does have the same sticker! I’ll try to get some better pictures, but we have about 30 people arriving at the lake house in advance of the 4th of July holiday.

Not many sales looked worth stopping at out my way. I did land this flammable rag can and some BLO. for $10. Probably good to have one if you’re using the other lol. The can is essentially new.

A fair day, lots of stops some were DOA, but enough for a worthwhile day:

I will say this, fighting a headache showed in a couple of decisions.

Right off the bat, I do not know why I kept the bottom combo in my hand... and I missed the chipped cutter jaw on the oddall no-name pliers. I liked the near needlenose tips though - likely Germany? possibly post war Japan, but no markings. Long C combo, a Billings SOE that may go in a kit I'm assembling. dent pullers, I swear I have a pair of these from 30-40 years back, but who knows where... $5 all




Old rusty hammers, the odd wedge hammer has some markings, including a patent # I need to look up. both need de-rusting bathes, and the wannabe leatherman's are Millers Falls. Same stop got me 5 music books. $3 all the square head hammer is 2 LB's, and I won't know if its a home brew until the rust is off.








Another YS - Winchester pocket knife, unused and unmolested for sharpening. and a pair of Ray-Bans $20 all




Another long C Craftsman DBE this time, and a G.M Co. Manufacturing 1/4" drive ratchet. my second in as many months? -Maybe I'l you the GJ triple on my own? - G.M not noted for top quality, but these are pretty decent for an older 18 T design and the head is generally smaller than the socket, so good clearance.



And a last ES stop. I got in about an hour after opening and it was very picked over. found these for $15: three 1/2" shank Morse drills, in 9/16, 17/32, and two in 5/8. plus the Schrade U.S.A brand "Leatherman"

We were in the next city east yesterday and stopped at the Habitat store. Looked like the local Fastenal brought in a load of fasteners and odds and ends. I don't really need much but I looked things over and did get a package of 10 masonry anchors, 5/16 x 1 1/2 inch and a package of 4 #43 drill bits. The huge pile of bags of fasteners was overwhelming and I was short of time so I didn't look further. Then I found that I won 2 lots at the local online auction so I picked that up today. Picks below of some of it. One lot had a set of letter drills missing 4 bits, 3 sets of 1 to 60 number drills that ended up being a complete set, one set missing 4 bits, and almost 2 dozen assorted bits in the last set. There was a set of 9 auger bits for a brace, a Fray tool handle with 8 or so tools, 3 plumb bobs, a 3" Starrett square, a Moore and Wright micrometer head mounted in a block of steel, 10 machinists clamps of various styles including a number of Starrett brand, and some other odds and ends. The second lot had a nice set of Russell Jennings auger bits in a case, and the odd thing is that the set starts with 3/16 as the smallest in addition to 1/4" and is missing a 13/16". There is also a box of assorted other styles of bits for electric drill use that I might not have any use for. The first lot also had an odd little grindstone tool that has cheap stamped metal gears driving 2 small wheels going opposite directions. I'll post more of that in a "what's this" thread in Vintage tools.

Also, super behind posting various finds, but this was from yesterday. Online Auction pickup had a "sale" running as well (will try and post auction grab and other sale items later).

Weird part was the main gal was trying to beat me up over $25 difference in our offers. Once I had already made a huge pile outside, she told me that everything after 2pm was free (if I had known that, I would have pulled out 3-4 of the best pieces and left everything else buried). She kept mentioning she wanted to have other things to sell, but it was all end-in, tucked away, with only some tape tags to identify it. Not sure how much people would have grabbed...

This was all in racks in an unfinished closet/utility room. It was half-under stairs, so as you went down the shelves, the boards got longer (more room to tuck it back).

Listed in order of quantity: Walnut, cherry, maple, hickory, oak, Bubinga, etc. And about 10-12 small "live edge" pieces for shelving (8"-2' long). Total is 30-40 boards, all 8'+ long and 8+" wide, about 5 that are 8/4 or thicker. Out the door for $200. Rough estimate put me at about 1.25/bdft for the total.

I hit on some good finds at the flea market today. A vendor who does clean outs had a full tool stack with some vintage goodies in it.

My eyes went directly to this when I looked in the top of the tool stack. A first in the wild for me, so I was excited. Especially since it was less than a buck.

Snap-On No. 6 ratchet adapter

I continued to dig and pulled out three sockets from 1928, along with a pair of early tappet adjuster sockets.

I was just pouring sweat out there today while pouring through the tool box in the direct sunlight, 90+ degrees out.
It was so worth it.

Sales have been plentiful around here but cheap tools have not! Resorted to picking up some Mac sockets off CL and paid out the nose at a little flea but picked up some cool stuff.

The Mac 1/2 drive deeps. $20 on the metric rail and another $12 for the SAE. Missing some key pieces in the middle of both sets but the Mac sockets are too nice! Also 4 bucks worth of random craftsman bits



This little pop up flea runs every year in the parking lot of a local church and haven’t had much tool luck the last couple years but there was a guy there today clearing out a bunch of USA craftsman. $26 all in on this if I remember right. Got a lot of pieces to make sets.

Nice clamshell 1/4 set in Metric even! The case is cool too. The professional metric combos are my favorite, they are super solid in the hand and surprisingly heavy. Also a bunch of 1/2 drive metric sockets in sizes I need and a few other random bits. The Kobalt USA combo was made by Williams if I’m not mistaken

Seems like every other stop today was worth it, all the rest had nothing of interest, but it was nice enough out that I didn't mind.

First stop was a barn/shop estate, and as it started yesterday, it was fairly picked over. But, there was so much stuff that they were leading off with 1/2 off, always my favorite. Craftsman socket box, two strands of C-man sockets -1/2" metric, 3/8" deep, Vanadium C-man DOE, Williams S wrench, metric C-man ignition wrench, Klein skinning knife, odd implement for multi driver, Snap-on catalog. $7


Two stops later, the fellow had a lot of truck brands, but knew what they were. On the other hand, he didn't know much about vintage machinist chests. So, I picked up a Gerstner in need of work for $15.


Another two stops later, another barn sale. MAC combo, driver, and brake wrench, Snap-on brake wrench, flare combo, extension. Mitutoyo digimatic, which wasn't working, so no way to test it. But I took a risk, and bargained appropriately. $20 for everything. And I had to go to the drug store anyway, picked up the right battery and it fired right up!

Finally, two stops later.

Vlchek and Stanley drivers, some heavy hook-and-eyes, and, out of the free pile, a Vlchek tool box. $1.

I was looking for info on the odd hammer I got today - It had Worcester Mass on it's top, and on the bottom a wrong patent No. and and obliterated company name:

Using an image description search I was able to find someone else's info post adn got the company mane and the pattent number, search on the USPTO is nearly as bad, but I got there.

We got together with the neighbors for a morning of garage sale shopping. Unfortunately many of the stops were in a neighborhood wide sale and many of those were slow drive byes. We stopped at a house where we had picked up all of the seller’s grandfathers antique woodworking tools last year. I grabbed a few items as did my wife and the neighbors. Here are my finds at that sale.
The draw knife was unmarked, the little square was a Stanley, three Klein nutdrivers, a mystery wood chisel, a TrueTemper 3lb sledge head, Boker angle longnoses, a Craftsman cold chisel and some unmarked pliers.
Another sale produced a pink mini Mag light just needing batteries for the Grandaughter
I found a Craftsman magnetic multi bit driver just missing the magnet. (Duh)
Not a great day for finding tools but a fun day with the neighbors.

Estate sale ($45): 14" Perfect handle screwdriver; Landers Fray & Clark bone handled carving knife; 4 - Dave Whitlock's surface bass flies; 10 - L. L. Bean Dry Flies; Leatherman Super Tool; Henckels kitchen shears.

Didn't realize that the Leatherman super tool had locking blades. Snapped it open and was stumped on how to close it. Turns out you open another blade partway to unlock the blade. Go figure. Just spatchcocked a chicken and it was like going through butter. Crunch, crunch, crunch, Crack. Flat as roadkill. Flies are off to my brother in the Kootenays.​

I already had most of this set in two smaller Craftsman Kromedge kits but this beast has the elusive 12-20 (Stanley guys will recognize that thread). [Edit: it does NOT have the 12-20 tap/die, darn it) Still, I wanted one of these so bad when I was a kid working at Sears in the 90's but they were like $300 even back then.

I had the same thing happen on the Schrade branded "Leatherman" I got today. same solution too. I'm betting Leatherman made these for Schrade.

Had to take my wife’s car in for a check up after the trans was rebuilt. The shop was in an area I don’t get to often and I stopped at a different store ran by an estate company on the way home.

It was packed full of….everything. Like no aisles, move stuff to walk through.

Unfortunately it is not organized at all. They seem to take a house worth of stuff and dump it in a pile and move on to the next house. Looking through stuff felt like cleaning and organizing, but for someone else, and then you pay them.

I did manage to find a couple small screwdrivers, a rotating hardware organizer with jars full of hardware, a 13mm SK wrench, and way in the back on the floor, behind a rack of clothes and under a dining table, this 6” Buffalo Vise. $50 for everything.


Yesterday I stopped at one of my regular thrift stores and found this whole box of laboratory glass. Marked $20, but kitchenware (how they had it labeled) was 50% off. $10 out the door, minus my 22 cents in rewards credit.
