Looks like those are crimping pliers, not wire-twisters.

A #6 Kant Twist is 6" opening--right? that's HUGE. Mine are #1--tiny.

Yup 6” open, biggest one I have as well. It’s a little beat up but still useable.

I think the pliers do both crimping and twisting. You flip them inside out to change function if that makes sense.

Here is my weekend work. Friday was a FBMP find, a pair of no name large machinist parallels. Came with some free steel scraps, great for the arbor presses.

The parallels are approximately 1-3/8” x 6.5”

Today was a TOO while fooling around in the city. Dropped MLW off for some event shopping, went to the ES, then took one of the dogs to the park, got a coffee, then picked her up. Lots of decent stuff, but little I needed at higher prices than I paid for the version I own. Fein OMT kit with case for 175, couple of Foredoms, etc. Grabbed the Xcelite ball end drivers at a good price, the HF ASO for a tolerable price, got the Stanley BP thrown in for free. Guy was gonna have a lot left at the end of the weekend. Miter saw, TS by DeWalt, jewelry roller, vulcanizer all at half retail prices, all in near New condition. Might have better luck selling at CL or MP than an Estate Sale.

The Xcelite set is 99PS-40 BP set seems to have an extra piece than shown online now. Would have been bonus if they were metric, but I had to borrow one from work two weeks ago, so it will be a welcome addition. The BP is a 32oz, not sure I have that size yet. Online HF ads say the ASO is 55#. The top needs some work, but it won’t be used for serious smithing, just banging on **** that needs straightening.

Edit: extra piece turned out to be 2 duplicates at 1/8 & 3/16 (99-24BP & 99-23BP), and short the 5/32 (guessing 99-25BP)

The sales in my area were not great this weekend. I did manage to come away with a Columbian D44 and a Denon 5.1 surround sound amp with speakers and subwoofer. I’m not an av guy but I thought Denon was a good brand. All for $25.

Denon has been top notch for me.
I had a CD Cassette rack mount deck that I used every weekend for about 25 years.
It was purchased for about 6 Benjamins
The CD portion finally gave up the ghost.
I'd say yours is worth a you ****.

Last Sat I picked up this Tru-Fit combo. it had a thick layer of white paint on one side, so i soaked it in SG for a couple hours adn got nowhere, so I chipped a lot of the paint off with a dull knife I use for such, and put if back in overnight. most of the paint brushed right off with a small SS brush, but I noticed something - see the line near the open end? That part was not in the SG. I can't recall seeing SG remove rust?




So its back in open end down to see if it was a fluke...

I have a bathtub ring on my Reed vise slide from not submerging it completely when degreasing. Re submerging did not help.

One trick I've learned is just to soak any paint covered tools in Evaporust. Not sure why that works but after a good soak I can usually remove the old paint with an easy scrub from an old toothbrush and a bit of dish soap.

SG generally will remove most paints. House paint, rattle can and model paints come off easy. I've gotten tougher paints off, but it takes time... (this one was a tougher paint)

Hot SG works even better -an old dedicated crock pot on low works well.

I need to try this. I bought some Wright wrenches with school bus yellow paint on them. I used Chisel paint stripper, but it only got off about 80-90% of the paint off. I hate using that stuff, too. I need to hide it, so my kid never uses it.

One trick I've learned is just to soak any paint covered tools in Evaporust.

Thinning out the layer of whatever you are trying to remove is another miracle cure.

Friend was trying to scrub off some paint drops with some liquid. I took a razor blade, removed 90% of the volume of the paint, his next scrubbing pass removed the rest.


Works with SG, Evaporust, Goo Gone, etc, get the stuff away that keeps you chemicals from reaching the interface, paper label, paint, gross rust, etc.

I've yet to find an old paint job--greasy or not--that will survive hot lye solution--especially in an ultrasonic cleaner. For the stubborn stuff and the really rusty stuff, hot lye solution in the electrolysis vat--nothing gets past that.

I haven't tried hot lye solution electrolysis in the ultrasonic--yet.

I was selling at fleamarket for the first time this year 2 weeks ago.
A nicely dressed, like they just got out of church couple, asked me if I am interested in buying some tools.
They know a guy, retiring, that has a garage full of stuff, just wants to get rid of everything & could they give him my number?
...... "be still my heart"......
By the time I got home, the man had already texted me, & I phoned him back, tried to get a feel for what he had.
Not a lot of name brand stuff, but he went on and on about how he needed to get rid of everything.
So the next day I made the hour drive.
He wanted the clear it out price. Most of the stuff was scrap candidates, with a few ok pieces.
I told him I would clear it out, & pay him a little over a hundred.
He declined. Sigh.
"Well, as long as I'm here, could I just pick a few things & make an offer on that?
He agreed, I offered 15 bucks on a pile of the only stuff I really wanted & he accepted.

Last week I hit an eclectic sale with a lot of power tools that just I breezed over, but I found a box of sockets that turned out to be New Britain Chrome 1/2" & 3/8" drive. Unfortunately, the only drive tool in the steel box they were tossed in was the 1/2" sliding T. Having never been a big NB collector (mainly due to their dearth locally), I was only mildly interested and not at all interested in the $25 price tag. Negotiations ensued. The unrelated metal box was $5 by itself--I've got a bag. Where are the other drive tools?--None available. His price came down but not enough. I asked to have a rusty 1/2" steel plate included gratis. We ultimately agreed upon $8 for the sockets and the plate and he dumped the sockets into an old stainless steel dog bowl. I continued to search for the missing drive tools without success. In a bucket of larger hand saws I pulled out a 10" back saw from a maker I had never heard of--Woodrough & McParlin. I didn't argue with the $4 asking price.

Unlike most back saws with a brass spine, this one has a blued steel spine. I re-blued it after testing out the cold-blue method on the cleaned-up 12x6x0.5 steel plate.


The 3" and 6" 3/8 extensions are from different eras, a 1/2 ratchet, all of which are plain steel, not chrome, and an E-46 Distributor-Carburetor Adjusting Tool are the only New Britain tools I had on hand. The extensions and the rat have New Britain in the normal script, but my new sockets have only the circle NB, the size, "Chrome" and Made in the USA--and no part numbers. Does the circle NB indicate "None Better" vs. New Britain? Does the lack of part numbers on my tapered sockets indicate manufacture in early to mid 30's--as opposed to late 30's when part numbers were stamped on them and just before they changed to a new numbering system?
I have nearly the complete line of 1/2" sockets from 1-1/4 down to 7-16 with the notable exceptions of 1-1/16 (straight wall), 31-32 (Indestro), 15-16 & 19-32 (missing). I have a spare 21-32. In the straight wall 3/8 sockets I'm missing the 19-32 and have an extra 5-8.
In the catalogs I've searched online there doesn't seem to be a set offering the full line of seventeen 1/2" sockets except the big No. 643M which also contained a 1/4" set but no 3/8" sockets. I'm therefore at a loss as to what set these might have belonged to and what drive tools came with them.



An additional three 3/8" sockets and the universal failed to make the group shot, as did the nicely cleaned up SS dog bowl.

Went to an estate sale where literally everything was free. They had advertised a couple tool lots between $25-$50 which convinced me to make the 30 minute drive. It turns out they wanted everything gone today and were fed up trying to get anyone to even pay a buck for something. This is an affluent community as well. Someone apparently had already filled up with 3 car loads before I got there so definitely missed out on some good stuff which I certainly would have paid for.

$20 got a Cash album, bag of marbles (some illuminate under a black light), 4 S-K wrenches, a tiny Blackhawk adjustable, a Proto wrench, 3 oil cans and a Mirage center channel speaker.





$5 got 8 new storage bins and a New-In-box album rack. Figured it was worth a chance on the album rack because I could use it to display larger oil cans if I don’t like it with the other audio equipment. Found it online for just under $60 from Modern Vinyl.

From the camping section - Vintage YETI corduroy hat, vintage REI duffel bag with brass and leather fittings, a Perrine fly box with dry flies, a Pflueger 1774 click/pawl reel, a Mag-Lite, and a funny little knife. $10


The knife interested me as it’s US made, but has the inscription of Ross H. Perot instead of H. Ross Perot!

The slipjoint pliers are Utica Cutlery Co, which is a different entity than Utica Tools.
That’s a diagonal cutter, not end cutter.

Thanks. Mistakes edited. I hadn’t even pulled things out to look for them. What drew me to the sale was the Crescent screwdriver handle that I could see from the pictures. The other things I was after - old school snowshoes and cross-country skis - were priced a bit too high. 30-50% off day may bring me back!

I already had most of this set in two smaller Craftsman Kromedge kits but this beast has the elusive 12-20 (Stanley guys will recognize that thread). [Edit: it does NOT have the 12-20 tap/die, darn it) Still, I wanted one of these so bad when I was a kid working at Sears in the 90's but they were like $300 even back then.
