That is a remarkable cleanup job. Looks like a different box. I have a Crown version of the same box. It looks much more used than yours. I store Craftsman =v= spares in mine. IMG_9923.jpegIMG_9926.jpeg

This is identical to a Kennedy box I picked up at a pawn shop with tools, including a Snap-On quick release 3/8" ratchet, a Craftsman (Germany) vernier caliper, a Crescent adjustable, some measuring blocks etc. for $40.

Does anyone know when Craftsman stopped offering the brown crinkle paint machinist Waterloo boxes?

I don't have the answer, but seeing the "recent" logo on this box surprised me.

I don't know if Waterloo made it. There are no dimples by the lock and the front door design is different; as are the side handles. It is crinkle brown though!

EDIT- I have no idea why the FB link has information in another language.

Nobody recognizes those drawer pulls? I've seen them but can't place it. Old Mac was suggested....

Looked though a dozen posts or so trying to find some info. No luck. Found this craftsman today when I went to my mother in laws house to patch a hole in her shed roof. Of course she didn’t want it. Or really anything in the shed. Any idea how old it is?

My guess would be 70-80's.

‘The Crown logo was used from late ‘50’s into the ‘70’s.

The crown top logo was introduced in 1959.... as others have indicated... the plastic handle makes it a later box.

Buckeye, 1971 is my best guess. Cause that’s the year I bought mine as my tool investment started to grow. Cheers, JimDon.

With the caveat that aspects of these boxes like yours (Beemer has one, too) don't jibe with other data, as I have noted on this and other threads. References indicate that the patent was assigned to Coe, an employee of another toolbox maker at that time, and he didn't start Duplex Mfg, which was located in Sherman (close to Jamestown), until 1932. Also, they actually look later than some of the examples that have the patent number embossed in the lids, which are typically black, not OD, don't have the Duplex decal, and have much cruder cantilever hardware. It's possible the other references are wrong. But there's a nagging possibility of a second, later patent. I've always had a note to do a second round of research, but I never did.
Help me please 😂😂 I think the patent your talking about might be my grandfathers railroad cantilever that was stolen

Check out these internet archive ads from duplex.

Especially 1932

If you see in the ad in 1932 it has leather handles . And there soft leather with no clasps. And there on both sides. . The lid is actually attached to the trays and go out. I can tell you what the locks look like Evan thought I can’t see it. .

About 2 years ago a bunch of my tools were stolen, including my grandfather in law’s cantilever railroad toolbox. I continue the hunt on here for it. They tore out the railroad in 1935 and I’m sure it was that company that tore it out then or the owner

My grandfather’s was bigger than this one and had 2 handle bars. Full size like the regular old cantilevers but it was attached to the lid and there was one on each side. All black. I’d say 14 to 16 wide about the same high and 24 plus inches. Painted straight black and seemed factory. Like hard good painted like the old union boxes( Jamestown area?????.
Grandpas also had 2 pale bucket style flip handles on the sides.. (????? I find it curious But his was more beat steel lids also. It reminded me of a union box honestly but I’ve yet to see a union cantilever. Most cantilever from before the war are Kennedy duplex or snap on and all the smallest ones. Grandpas was huge

image.jpgThe pic is the same the middle latch would be a brass window like latch. On the one lid was the little piece of brass riveted on with a small hole and the other side was the turn latch. Like in the pic except brass and they’d meet so you could lock it with a lock.
The two clasps on the sides of the locking latch are steel loops that go from the bottom and fold the loop up to the top and then push the bottom back down…. Many a times did I think it was closed and spilled the whole thing

I think my grandfather’s box was the patent you’re thinking of. At least a version of it. Sold in very small amounts

I’ve never seen a toolbox like it. I’ve yet to see one with that turn style clasp( not exactly like the pics but close. I’ve seen old luggage with it once or twice.

It’s like his was an early union/duplex box. And if you study up on union a couple of the early companies actually made suitcases and luggage as well. And they used luggage style hardware. They also used a lot of pale bucket style handles on the sides. There’s an early company that makes pale buckets called duplex???? Right by Jamestown.

I know I know I’m obsessed 😂😂😂.

I just thought maybe you might have more insight since you seemed to have studied duplex
I honestly always thought it was an early Kennedy but this is the only cantilever pic I’ve ever seen with 2 leather soft handles. It also seemed hand made instead of machine welded. I don’t know if the duplex was machine welded. I know Kennedy was by the 30s. Kennedy also has an ad for a larger cantilever in the 20s it just only ever shows the small one. And I’ve never seen an actual 20s cantilever that was the large one😂😂

It had another box that was also unmarked. An early 24 by 12 by 14 garage box that was black with a straight black tray. The reason I bring it up is because it was the same style metal and a lot of the same features. It was a double lid that met in the middle

The thing that was different was its lid hinges. It was era matching brass hinges riveted in. Each one was a long elegant v on both sides.

It had metal handles on top. But it had wooden spinning covers over the metal. And had a little hook latch with a latch that could pull out swivel and turn down

I always thought these two boxes went together. Same Color same metal same old style of metal boxes. Both had different handles and latches. Both had brass hardware that kinda resembles a suitcase.

I’ve been through about 30000 pages of old catalogs as
ADHD reversed is a b1+[\. I hate caring about something so much I want to know everything 😂😂. Usually it’s just meh

Picked this combo up last Spring. Cleaned up the top box awhile awhile ago, now working on the bottom one. Pics of both of them together are from the ad. The bottom drawer had a lot of corrosion on both sides so had to do some extra work on that. Other drawers cleaned up well with a little degreaser and cleaning.

Picked up a hand full of NOS boxes from the 70s and 80s last weekend. Honestly a bit more modern than I prefer but I couldn’t pass on them. I have the 1950s version of the SK and it’s probably my favorite box.

I can’t find any info on the Utica box other than it was potentially made by Park.

I’ll post pictures of the Kennedies later.

For anyone interested, there’s a very similar Utica/Bonney branded one here:

Finally had some time to go through this old box.

Did a little research, found something on eBay similar, it is a "U-need-A - F.W. Boelter" box, in all likelihood. It has a lock on it, it is a Yale lock. I'm going to do more digging in the dirt in the bottom and see if I can get lucky enough to find a key. There is a lot of interesting stuff in there, just a few pics of some of it.

There is a contoured piece, with a lid. I'm not sure what the material is. I think it may be a burnisher of some kind. Or maybe a template for a certain shape cut. Maybe somebody here knows exactly what it is.

Cool Remline service box cart. Simonson sold one similar. Not mine.

Snagged this today. 11 Canuck Bucks. Sans tray.

Looks to be a 1955 KR-224 in decent condition, with some nice tools in there.

Edit: It took some hunting around. But it appears there is no tray, and this is a 1948 box that was used with 410-HD-B and 414-HD-B socket sets. That is the only reference to KR-224 I was able to find.

@Private Lugnutz, any way we could see inside? I'm curious about those "Patented Adjustable Dividers."
I didn't snap a photo of the interior. Maybe it will still be there this weekend. It was a house liquidator and their stuff tends to hang around a few weeks before getting dumped. There was a time I wouldn't have even hesitated to buy a box like that, despite the flimsiness, just because of the name and the decal (and the black finish and bright handle and hardware), thinking I would flip it eventually, but I have been in much more selective mode last couple years.

Ah, I misunderstood. Thought it followed you home. I was wise enough to stop dragging home every box that caught my eye a while back, though I still have more stuff that I have storage right now. I use everything I have though, so I don't feel like a glutton or a hoarder...yet...
