Yesterday was a parade of events featuring a tire going flat on my truck, a Coyote, a gate left open for about three minutes and a freak gust of wind that over traveled the gate pulling its anchor out of the wall.
So, beside my garage, early today to beat the sun, gate repair.

Also, in case I don’t have enough to do. The handcart shown above had a flat tire when I went to use it.

Foam-filled tires fixed that problem for me--permanently.

My batch of Sodium Citrate (SoCi from now on) has been used for a couple of months now and seems to be getting a bit tired, so I dumped it and went to mix up a batch of home-brew using the 7 gal. pail of citric acid I picked up for $5 at a yard sale a while back. When I bought I asked the gal selling it if it was really citric acid in that nearly-full pail and she assured me it was.

It isn't citric acid. It's corn starch. I guess I'm in the Ooblek business now.

Trust, but verify....

Lick your finger and jab it in and and taste, as long as you're sure it's food related / grade of some sort

The Suburban continued it's resistance to a return to service. Dead battery is now crank no start without spark. Did a check of fuses, sensors I touched and other WAGs. No luck need to confirm if coil is throwing spark or not.

Has done this before and a cap and rotor fixed it.
That pumpkin is ready to take a leak all over the floor/ground any day now

Decided to install the "air horn" that I had removed from our '16 Subaru onto the '23 we bought a month ago. (It's one of those compact electric ones, can't remember the name). There is no room to work on these cars, plus having to remove the plastic shrouds in front of the radiator. Got it mounted, found a new relay, got it mounted and started running wires, trying to look half way professional. Had all the wires connected except for the trigger wire from the original horn, so I connected the plug to the relay and the air horn blasted. What? Wait, the trigger wire isn't connected. Checked my wiring. Yeah, it's right.

Got another relay, same brand, new, and it did the same thing. Same thing with the third relay, same brand. Found yet another new relay different brand that is internally wired the way that matches my schematic, so I used it. Too hot and tired to wonder what is going on with those others. A job for another day. It was 91* in the shop, but at least I had the dehumidifier running with three ceiling fans and one pedestal fan. Oh yeah, and the horn works.

Changed the oil and filter on the JD 3032e and cleaned out under the hood. Dad kept saying “we’ll deal with that battery terminal corrosion next time” so I decided this time was that time. The nut was already eaten through. IMG_1394.jpeg

The hi-torque mini starter on my old car finally gave up the ghost after about 13? years. Ordered a new one . Had to remove header, heater box,and several misc items to get to the old starter. It is really tucked up in there. It came off quick once I could get to it. But the other process took me about 6 hours over two days. I'm not as young as I once wuz. Happy to say I finally got it done though. Starter solenoid was bad and that led to the gear also getting worn out against the flywheel.

That will be next. I’m down to my last tube and can of slime.
It took me far too long to do but I eventually (we're talking years) replaced the tubed tires on mine with solids from Harbor Freight. EVERY time I went to use it there was a flat or nearly flat. I could kick myself for procrastinating.

Well the last 36 hours have been a whirlwind....Finished up the CV axle swap on my Wife's Envoy and she drove it to work.

Started on the catalytic convertor swap on my daily driver so my wife can drive next week while her truck is at the body shop getting a new front fascia. It's a 2001 Blazer ZR. I had to pull the transmission cross member and end the day with the old out and the passenger side in and the transmission cross member set in with the bolts started.

My friend visiting from Colorado texted me that his Audi won't shift gears...6 spd trans. this morning I went over to where he was staying and helped him tear into the console. Found the shift connected to the cable with a nylon bushing which broke. Took out the shifter and drilled it out for a bolt. No luck as it would shift but bind. He'll go back to CO and get the correct parts on order.

Finished the cat system install but have some exhaust leaks and an AGM battery that is being difficult.

Almost forget that my newest vehicle is throwing a trouble code so to the dealership it will go.

On the positive side I got to use a lot of my tools!!!! Now there isn't a voice outside of my head asking me if I really need that tool...because I do obviously.

On Thursday bought 4 new flat free tires from HF they were installed on the trailer which hauls the generator. Rolls like it otta! Then figured out why the electric start conversion on the predator would not work. I took if on and off several times but the flywheel was proud by about 1/8". Turns out not all 212cc HF have the same crankshaft diameter. Glad I finally figured it out. Images are flywheel bores back to back.

It is legal to make your own as long as you do not sell, transport on public roads, or use them on other's land without permission.
Not that big, though, only legal to use small fireworks in PA Class C 50 mg max

Also not legal to use fireworks within 150 feet of any building - which pretty much means you cannot legally use fireworks in the city or suburbs. Unfortunately, people still do, many fires and injuries yesterday here.

Class C 50mg limit.... that is if you buy, sell or store them, not if you make them yourself and use them right away, as in explosive target mixes . Yes you can not store them or use them near a house or car. I lit them off in a farmer' field after I asked permission, I did not use a vehicle to get to the field, I was not on drugs or drunk and do not have a criminal record.

Last time I tried that, it turned out to be sodium cyanide--mmmm, almonds!

I use to pack sodium cyanide, rather pleasant, pungent almond smell though I would not recommend deep breaths around the stuff . Just out of high school got a job in a chemical packing company, nearly got fired for demanding a gas mask for working with cyanide, it gives off cyanide gas in a dried state. That was in 1970 before there were major enforced safety regulations.

You have a build thread on this monster ?

Curious as why a C6 over a C4 ?
I have had this truck for 24 years now, way too long to keep a build thread going anywhere. There’s been spotty ones here and there.

Canada Day 2025, drove it out on the transmission alone.
456EC7C2-2276-4854-8D04-FA77E42750F9.jpeg

C6 over C4….easier to get adapters to run a doubler tcase set up. Prefer to keep options open for the future. As in a stroker 351, but at the same time I am running higher gears for the 42s to get wheel speed when I need it.

finally got my Miller 175 dialed in last night and welded back together some spacer plates for the skidplate now they are drilled out (at work of course, their drill press made ease of 1.375 plate steel),

its a day to go after deeper gears and hook up the Doubler and 205 shifter linkages all up underneath.

then back on the brake lines so I can get this skidplate on and off my floor.

That makes perfect sense. If it'll clear a C6, a switch to a C4 in the future would be easy as pie with it's smaller size.

Today, I finally decided to complete the refurbishment of my catalogue #1426 1938 Delta Finishing sander with the period correct 864 Miter gauge and machine stand...

Spins up like new... This was a very satisfying salvage job...
I was forced to get this finished because it will be used to fine tune the 384 miter cuts needed for the trim on the garage door panels...
Putting her back to work as she should be...

Why downsize unless it’s for 40s. Lol
Well, other factors. . . header clearance, starter clearance and accessibility but weight is one of them.

You do what you want, I was just curious. . but here's some reading for you. Just food for thought.

Changed the oil in the '95 F150...first time doing it after inheriting it last year, and the truck's first change since 2018. Figured out how to change the filter from underneath (used to pull it out from the top when I helped my dad), what a messy job.

Also put some delicious Gummi Pflege on the rubber door and vent window seals.

Now that I finally have the right parts, I can rebuild the beer seals on the canning line filler heads.

54635584828_9120110def_o.jpg

Mounting hardware is all inch, everything else is metric. Assholes.

I rebuild the heads once or twice a year, as needed. Usually, the packaging guy removes the heads for me, but he couldn't do it after the last canning. I haven't pulled the heads off in a while, so it took a little longer than if I were in practice.

Here are the parts I'm replacing:

54635655940_533ed23897_o.jpg

I throw up a little every time I have to order these, as those two bits of rubber and one of plastic cost... ninety-three bucks per set--and there are seven sets. I haven't been able to source them for less--and I've sure tried. I'll be trying again.

Taking the heads apart and removing the old seals:

54635562944_9903516321_o.jpg

You know it's a good job when you can use two matching vises at the same time. The Speed-Vise on mag base is coming in handy.

The parts back by the Kennedy are the pneumatic cylinders to open and close the filling valves. They're aluminum, so don't go into the USC with lye solution and they aren't rebuildable--IIRC, they're about $300 each when we have to replace them. Fortunately, that ain't often.

Stainless parts fresh out of the USC:

54635562929_214db3d4cf_o.jpg

Now to put it all back together....

54635346666_8b9a454a39_o.jpg

That plastic guide has to go into that little hole.

54635584818_9b023c0b9b_o.jpg

Turns out, a Speed-Vise is perfect for this.

Now this seal:

54635346671_a53e3a5d89_o.jpg

has to go into a groove down inside there... I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve for this--and some special incantations that are ****. A good reason to do this **** while I have the shop to myself. Just gotta keep it quiet enough that I can't be heard up front.

It's all back together now and beer thirty on the Fifth of July! A perfect day for working in the shop--and, for once, I shed no blood!

If I was needing these on that quick a turn around I'd have then bought and inventoried (For count) right after the last rebuild.

That's my SOP for keeping a brewery and commercial kitchen running far from supplies. But in this case, those seals don't fail catastrophically--they give us a pretty good warning when they're getting worn. I have enough lead time to order the parts--assuming my supplier doesn't FU.

Emptied 1 of 6 cabinets to reorganize everything. The cabinets are corporate-style, with sliding vertical panels that I bought when my employer was updating the office. Paid $15-20 each, and they work great, in case you come across any similar opportunities.

Hours and hours of work are starting to come together. Scrape, clean, patch, replace, prime, spot prime, paint twice! This is the biggest mess of my project so far. The front 3,000 sq ft of ceiling is in much better shape so I anticipate it being an easier process to prep and paint. I may even buy a spray rig for it. This 3,000 sqft portion of the restoration has been a labor of love that is paying off.
