Beautiful vise, great deal, but you're coming awfully close to violating the last part of Rule #5...

Former hosts, what do you think? Do we need to DSQ the Suckage awards for this one???

Mike
He was pretty close, if not over the line for the suckage solicitation on his initial post. That’s why I didn’t award suckage

My first thought was solicitation, but then a second plausible reading is that he intends to abuse the vise. Since the accused cannot be compelled to testify against himself to clarify which it is, I’d let it pass, with just the warning.

This was basically my thought process, and why I awarded it.

I have always seen comments like that in the following light... "How close can I get before it doesn't count?" (In a humorous way)

Kind of like taking a picture with your knee and lower thigh in it, but no higher.

For clarification, I would also let it slide. We all know that $5 Wilton's are in a special category, so alluding to that is ok.

I thought the same thing, but given the screaming deal, I’d let it slide … and he still SUUCKS!!!

I have started really pulling back on both the number of sales I go to, and how much I post in this thread (I try to get stuff away quicker so it doesn't pile up). So if we go by either of those considerations, I am far out of the running.

Update: here is what was in the machinist chest that I am keeping:
54652650195_7aefb0e4c0_b.jpg
20 or so taps, a dozen dies, pocket knife, wood filler putty, blades, Plomb socket, drill bits, some penny's, glass cutters, and so on.

Like every old machinists chest and old tool box, there are glass cutters. Can anyone say what the machinists did with them?

Organizing the basement to avoid the heat on Sunday, I found at least a dozen. Can anyone say how to tell if they are worth keeping?

I see them as a tool box, more so than machinist chest, thing. But a machinist chest that gets turned to home use may eventually get one .

Back in the day, it was much cheaper to buy a sheet of glass, and cut a pane to fit where Jr hit a baseball thru the window. Then putty it back into the pframe.Nowadays, we pay the hardware store to cut to fit, and probably install it in the frame too .

I've been in a few vintage garages that had 3/4 pieces of window glass in them, in an L shape where they cut us on pane out.

Nowadays with vinyl windows, double layer gas filled panes it just isn't a thing anymore.

I've always had very mixed success cutting glass. And I learned from Dad, who was no expert ether. Using old glass for old houses was always our excuse. I actually happen to need a new little tub of whiting mix for a repair to a porch window I broke. If I had to cut the glass, I'd have no idea which cuter to use.

I just don't see guys in a machine shop (or a pattern shop for that matter) cutting glass. But, I see the cutters in virtually every box I've found.

PS. No big box store will cut glass to order. Don't even bother.

Lowes used to do this (as recently as 3-4yrs ago). Not all Lowes, and not all the time (certain employees only) but they had a vertical setup like a Panel saw.

There's really nothing special to it. Sharp cutter, a solid, flat surface, straightedge. The surface should have one hard, sharp 90 degree edge, longer than the glass cut you're making. Score the glass--once only--place the score at that sharp edge, give it a flex. I've replaced dozens of window panes, built custom aquariums, etc. The sound of the cutter making the score is satisfying, as it the snap when the glass breaks right where you want it to.

PSA: The cutter produces hundreds of tiny glass shards when scoring. Be aware and take precautions.

^^^ This ^^^

One thing I've always heard, and missed myself for that matter, is a tiny drop of oil on the wheel's axle before cutting, and the wheel needs to be sharp. test it on scrap. Use a nice firm pressure.

Some can simply tap at the crack and get it to pop, which is how you get those "L" shaped leftovers.

I saw this lot on FBM and made an offer on a whim. The seller accepted. It's the second Snap-on FB-50 that I've found recently (this one is without a tray as well). Some nice wrenches inside, too. Plomb, Bonney, Vlchek, Blackhawk, Craftsman and some others that I need to clean up to see the markings. Diamalloy (12"), Crescent (12") and P&C (10") adjustables. Hex drive sockets where the sizes are stamped with a dash (e.g., 5-8) and an asterisk - forget the brand. The large socket adapter looking thing is marked Plomb Los Angeles 4418 13/16-16 and is threaded. No idea yet what that is. (EDIT: the 4418 is a wheel knocker.) The kit wrench is Indestro. The plier looking things are marked Made in USA - no idea on those yet either.

Pliers-things are "hog-ring" pliers. Lots of uses for hog-rings back in the day, including hanging things, clamping mitered corners in frame-making and keeping hogs from rooting.

Every household "junk drawer" had a glass cutter or two when I was younger. I never saw a housewife cutting glass....

I see hog ring pliers, used for upholstery mostly anymore. Beer hippie beat me to it

Also (currently) used for making eyes at the end of shock cord, which is useful on small sailboats, for trapeze returns, traveler block returns, etc. That's the only reason I've ever bought or used one.

I don’t care what you paid, to find Crescent double end adjustables in that condition warrants a YOU ****!! Even here is ‘Crescent-country,’ they are a rare find and NEVER in that condition. Nice score.

very cool!

I'm not generally a fa of blow mold boxes, but sometimes they are a great fit - I have a couple smaller one in my Samurai as road boxes, and they don't rust and don't rattle. Have another larger one in the T-van, same purpose.

And ditto on the latch/hinge comment

Ditto!

Fun get there. Too bad it wasn’t the stacked leather handle variety, that would have been even cooler.

That would be very cool!

I waited all day at an auction in May 2011 to get one of those hammers! It’s a prized part of my shop.

Been watching this one for a bit. I have a few vintage 1960 Cornwells and decided I needed another. This is the SK-24. This is in really nice shape for it’s age, and the patina matches my TC-65 lower cabinet nicely. Thirty-Five clams brought it home…Looking forward to cleaning it up.
