At my business location I had this vintage 2 bay former gas station. It already needed a lot of work, concrete was in poor condition, electrical service also in poor condition, etc. This winter we had an extremely rough winter and it almost collapsed. Lots of damage to the structure. I got an estimate of approximately 10 K to fix just the damage, and not the rest of the problems. So instead, I put in a new pole barn, 40 x 64 x 16. My guys are still working in the old garage every day, doing the best they can. As soon as the concrete and doors are in, we will cut the back wall out of the old garage, move all of our equipment and 4 post lift into the new one, and then take this one down. Radiant in floor heat, rockwool insulation, and eventually a mezzanine.

Lots of space.

Just think how many stories the old building could tell.
I’ve known that garage almost 50 years. I bought the property 20 years ago. When we were kids, the previous owner, my dear friend, and I, built several very successful or will track race cars in that garage. It was originally a gas station in the 30s or 40s. At one time I had thoughts of trying to find out what it looks like then and restoring it back to what it was. But it’s really not practical; not only for the cost, but we could really use the space where it is.

My friend has been gone several years, though, died too young from cancer. So it will be a little weird the day of it comes down. But nothing is forever.

FWIW, my wife commissioned a local artist to paint the North Rockland Amoco building (not my avatar) the way it was when my father ran it as Esso in the 40's and 50's. He used the actual building as well as some old pictures to go "back in time." Like yours, this was a wood frame building built in 1925 as a Chrysler agency and operated as a gas station and repair shop since. The picture still hangs on our wall and I use it as a reminder of who I am and where I came from.

That’s an excellent idea. I already plan to have a nice photo of my late friend from whom I purchased the property in the new building.

bams50,

Can you post some more pics of the old service station? Sometimes it just nice to compare pics of where autos used to be repaired.

The picture in the original group pretty much tells a story of the exterior. It doesn’t really look like much. This is still currently a working garage, such as it is, but here are a few pictures of the inside.
