This has been said many times here before, but 5.5mm is a standard metric hex size.

It's rare for me to find a new tool that piques my interest or something that I need. But, I succumbed to the HF 30% off any $10 item over the weekend. Just some doo-dah stuff. It was more the outing than anything else. Total under $20.

Shears - They actually feel pretty good.
Lighted flexible magnetic pickup.
A pair of mini hammers. I have them in my toolbox in the house and decided I'd get a pair for the garage as well.

My other H.J. Epstein order arrived today after being lost by the post office for a couple weeks. Glad they found it, or I would have never been able to get another Clipit again;). Surform blades, Felo, FACOM, and a NOS Lufkin. I’m very happy. IMG_5036.jpeg

Finally got my 1/4 semi deep sockets in, I didn't know this existed. Got them from Casoman(Amazon) 4 to 15mm. Overall they are 32mm length. I believe these are rebranded apex. The gearwrench look similar and even come in the same crappy rail(I have the 3/8 gearwrench semi deep). They were cheap, currently 17$ https://a.co/d/hMjTTHY.

This is a prototype 1/4 inch metric kit I'm working on. I almost never use the sockets on my other 1/4 kits, and when it's time I wish I had some more length. Someone on here mentioned they wanted 1/4 semi deep meme kit, that inspired me to make one 😂. Also wanted a full size driver, 1/4 ratchet, and dedicated bit ratchet. The other kits always come with some janky driver, and ratchet that is too small to actually turn the sockets. The top lod will also have the pliers, just haven't figured out how to attach them. Zits about the same size as the new HF icon kit.

Yesterday, a thread chaser set, Tap Magic, some Bojo scapers. I got the trial set of the scrapers one of each density plastic to test them out before buying a fuller assortment of shapes.

Today I took an old grinder with shot bearings to the scrap yard. It's a small place and you can nose through their sorting bins. Found a bunch of shoulder screws, some 12pt. M12 X 1.75screws and 4 stainless 1"-8 and 3 1/1/2" nuts. No need for them at the moment, but the fastener hoarder inside couldn't resist. $19 bucks at scrap prices. The thread chaser was put to immediate use cleaning all the threads on the shoulder screws. Buying new, the large 316 SS bolts are $7+ and all the shoulder screws are $2-3 ea.

This torque wrench was the deal of the day at KC Tool last week and I bit. It’s pretty cool. Tossed the knife in with the order.

I need to email Gedore about this thing. It bugs me that the 2 scales are out of sync. Not sure if that can be adjusted. It will bother me every time I use it though. EDIT; KCT offered to exchange it, and I think I am going to take them up on it! EDIT #2, replacement arrived and it’s perfetc!

I think the claw hammer was one of the first items I ever bought at our Harbor Freight way back in '17. Good for household/light duty. In tight spaces/recessed areas, an electrician's hammer (with a slightly elongated head) is better.
SK 1/4" ratchet

Guessing NOT USA anymore? I've got two of them, including one me and a buddy rebuilt. They're still going strong.

I think both of mine are mid '80s timeframe. Both have "USA" stamped.

The 40970 is still listed as USA:

The 45170 and 42470 too (and others)...

It´s a buttersmooth ratchet with a good finish. My favourite right now :)

Anybody else have an induction heater for stuck bolts? This one came today... I've heard great things about them, haven't tried one yet. And of course my typical video...

Side note: I hope members here don't find it annoying that I post so many new tools and tool videos... Just to be clear, it is a complete labor of love for me at this point. But if others don't enjoy, let me know and I'll dial it back.

A buddy is selling up as he starts thinking about retiring, so I went over with cash:
IMG_2487.jpeg

The tech angle and 3/4” ratchet were the two items I specifically wanted, both freshly refurbished by SO. The other bits were a little more impulsive but I think they look handy. The only bit I’m not sure on is the ratchet wrenches, they’re not a tool I use often.

I have a very similar one from Vevor. It is very helpful and way less damaging or dangerous than a blowtorch.

Talking to a buddy at a tire depot, he was raving about the new one, which is apparently a flat copper pad you hold onto the item, not a coil that goes around it. Apparently much better. I haven’t priced one yet.

Something like this:

How is the quality of that OTM thread chaser kit? Have it in my Amazon wishlist but not sure if it is chinese junk or decent.

Before this website, I found myself wandering around aimlessly in ignorant bliss of all the fine tools out there that would make my life easier in exchange for hard earned American dollars. Starts out slowly with some Wiha Ball End Hex Keys..then Knipex Cobra Pliers, which leads to the 3 pack set of the Knipex Pliers Wrenches. Now I find myself the proud owner of a Festool TS 55 Track saw and accessories, and eye-balling Craigslist and eBay for a dust extractor.

That said, this track saw cuts MDO (sign-guy plywood) beautifully, no regrets.

A little cheaper at Amazon, but no 20% off coupons like Zoro has sometimes.

These ratchets are manufactured by Wright, aren’t they?
No, those are made by SK as far as I am aware.

Wright and Snap-on both use a similar rotary pawl mechanism.

Wright's mechanism, however, is not user serviceable compared to SK and they use a helical split ring retainer vs a regular snap ring. Not sure on Snap-on as I don't own one.

Pretty much every other round head uses the Facom sliding pawl mechanism because it is stronger and has fewer parts, so I suspect easier to manufacture. Facom, USAG, Proto, Beta, Gedore, Elora, etc.

SK doesn’t seem to have any manufacturing left in the US. I believe everything still made in the US is subcontracted out. I guess it could be old stock, but it’s been years now, but they are still selling some items, like their speed wrenches out of inventory.

Based on my usage cleaning these shoulder screws, I'm satisfied with it. Not tap and die kinda steel, but decent enough to do the job. Each piece is engraved and they're color coded into SAE coarse, fine and metric. Nice case, a good assortment of all the basic sizes. I don't think the screws I cleaned were all that bad though, so I can't say I really pushed them too hard. For the occassional use I'll encounter, I think they'll be fine, we'll see.

I love info on new stuff, keep it coming!

Feedback (since you asked): Just my opinion, and I may be in the minority, but I absolutely despise box-opening videos. I would MUCH rather see in-use videos of tools (unboxing can be part of the usage video). Especially when given a tool by a sponsor, it just comes across as a desperate cry for attention and click-counts...

Having said that, THANK YOU for not being an over-caffienated screaming idiot with blaring music (and/or an equally over-caffienated screaming partner) in your unboxing video!!!

I already own a tap / die set. How is a thread chaser / rethread tool different (better?) enough to warrant the extra purchase?

I do have split dies, which DEFINITELY help (you can put it behind damaged threads at the end of a fastener / spindle.

But, why do I want / need a different type of tap?

Feedback is *always* welcome!

I also mostly hate unboxing videos, especially the ones where they get out the knife, cut the tape, remove the outer box... I'm like "I know what a f****g cardboard box looks like!"

I partially kept the 'unboxing' part on mine because I do like to show COO if available and that is usually on the outer packaging... It did occur to me after I shot that last video that I should have at least set up a 10mm bolt in my vise and seen if I could easily get it cherry red with the device.... I'll do better next time!
